Usually it is seen and also my experiance that when 1st time parrot breed they do have lack of experiance so they could not take that much care of the bird.
Baki sawal raha soft food ka. When ever chicks are born do not stop soft food but what you can do is you start giving then corn along with any kind of soft food.

I do not have any idea about African Grey's but what I have observed from lovebirds experiance is that some of them do not know how to bring up chicks in first few breeds, after some time they feed chick properly and take good care of them even if they have 6 chicks at a time, try to introduce Probiotics and calcium and D3 in regular meal and if the bird is afraid and gets panicked when it sees any one then show your minimum involvement during breeding period. And provide them best diet.
