NOTE: There are some British scholars in mainstream academia who don't hold to the 2SH, but from where I'm standing it's mostly to stick it to the Germans.
ERRATUM (06/15/2020): I just realized: the picture at 37:55 is not Robert W. Funk the famous biblical scholar, but rather Robert B. Funk the chemical engineer. Whoops! How embarrassing. (For me, not Robert W.: since I think even he would have to admit Robert B. is the more photogenic of the pair.) There is a picture of the correct Funk online here. www.westarinstitute.org/membe...
(01/09/2021): I was just trying to find something in this video and gaped in disbelief as I heard myself saying that "'catena' is the Greek word for 'chain.'" No it's not!! It's the Latin word for 'chain.' What the ham, I knew that. Not sure what happened there - my current theory is I was hacked by Russians.

Yes, yes, yes. Please reprint Orchard.
I would totally buy a reprint of the Orchard.
Without a doubt you are right there at the top in terms of trust, humor and *smarts among those of whom I am aware on UA-cam when it comes to sharing thoughts on all things Scripture.
You are helpful, entertaining, knowledgeable, a good teacher and communicator. Thank you, its a gift.
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. The knowledge, the rhetoric (in a good sense), the directness: it is refreshing! I am a Systematic (i.e., Dogmatic and Fundamental) Theologian who believes that orthodox biblical scholarship is essential for authentic systematic theology. With a B.A., S.T.B., S.T.L., and S.T.D., my biggest regret has been a lack of decent scripture scholarship from which I could base my presentations. You're helping me discern where to aim my focus. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Wow this video is good. Informative and entertaining. 😮
I find myself coming back to it every now and again. Wow
Coming back to this video for a second time. I’m taking a Hebrew Bible course at a secular university, and am being fed the documentary hypothesis and/or all the textual and literary inconsistencies of the Bible in every lecture. It’s like the class is designed to destroy faith. I absolutely love your take on this. My spirit is refreshed. Thanks again for all the content and please make more on the subject of modern critical scholarship and how we in the Church ought to respond. Or more videos on anything. I don’t care. 😅
That is exactly what the class is designed to do.
It is because of the St. Irenaeus Ministries that I have ordered Cassuto's book critiquing the documentarian hypothesis.
This is such an incredible video that deserves wider circulation. The wealth of knowledge is edifying and in particular the guidance to orthodox sources. The authors faith and humble obedience to the magisterium of the church is the most impressive. Intellectual vigor grounded in sincere and obedient faith. Bravo!
Gotta admit, the Catholic Study Bibles section is an entire oral epic with as much emotion as the Iliad. Going from the fascination and reverence to the Greek Catenas and the Haydock Bible to the dark ages of Jerome and the NAB to the small glimmer of hope with the Ignatius NT was just so great to hear. The anecdote from your TA friend at Notre Dame really made it personal. May God bless and illuminate all biblical scholars!
Do you guys ever see yourselves reprinting Orchards Commentary? Absolutely brilliant catholic work.
Reprinting Orchard's commentary would be great. I vote for it. I'd buy it - provided it is not at some ridiculously high price.
Available in a reprint through Abebooks, selling from Great Britain for $57 US.
Available in Verbum for a reasonable price.
31:34 Hey, you mentioned that if viewers only learned about the Orchard commentary, this video would have been worthwhile. Mission accomplished, thank you! Didn't even have to sell my bed to buy one.
One of my favorite videos.
This was excellent. Watched the whole presentation and I’m not even Catholic!
Love it! Haha
Brilliant explanation of the modernist apostacy.
This has to be the most in depth video on this topic I have ever seen 😮. As someone in the market for a new study Bible and wants to study The Bible in general this video is amazing
I’ll be honest, I came here looking into understanding the differences between more contemporary study bibles, I’m looking into RCIA and am for the first time trying to fully understand God and I stumbled into an in-depth, articulate, scholarly look at how to properly study scripture accompanied by several passionate experiences and testimonies and what I meant to have play as I did dishes ended up with me actively listening and taking notes for the entire hour and 39 minutes. Just wow. What wonderful, thoroughly vetted, emotionally charged yet highly logical work you put into this. Thank you so much.
Brilliant-please keep it coming!
Will try! This last video kind of took it out of me, so I'm going to stick to shorter ones for a while.
This is exactly the type of channel I've been looking for. Thank you and keep posting.
Thank you for this wonderful video. Your straightforward presentation style is incredibly informative and throughly refreshing.
Beyond blessed to have found your channel!!!!
This went a lot deeper than I was expecting!
Before I found your sight I already had several of the Study Bibles.
Questions on 2 more popular ones.
1. The Word on Fire Bible
2. The Navare Study Bible which I'm working my way through now.
Word on Fire seems to be a bible for beginners, not a serious study bible.
The Navarre Bible, when talking about the individual books, are pretty good. Not modernist, lots of Fathers and Saints chiming in. The Navarre Bibles in sets/series of several bible books are not as good, simply because there are fewer notes. If you can read Latin, these are nice.
Wonderful lecture. I couldn’t stop listening. Thank you.
I really enjoy this. And I'm learning so much. Thank you very much for the time and work you put into these. שלום
I just found this channel and wow, I love it. So happy. Amazing video. Thank you!
Definitely want the Orchard back in print! (Fantastic videos btw)
This is absolutely riveting!!!
Reprint Orchard, please. Thanks
I CONCUR
This
I've learnt so much from this video! I can't thank you enough for saving me from bad theology! Please, please, please post more videos!
After ~2 weeks of watching the first part (Q&A 2) I have found the next....yay
Your wit is only slightly surpassed by your magnificent scholarship. Thank you for this tour de force. . . An interested Episcopalian ( well, nobody is perfect).
Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I enjoyed your excellent video. I am starting with the Great Adventure Bible.
This is excellent...you should write a book about this! Use what you said in the intro...very eloquent and made it easy to understand for the public.
Hi Ted, Thank you for your excellent talk... not sure how many time I watched it. Following your advice I bought an Orchard commentary book (second hand off course); thankfully, I didn't have to sell my bed to get it. It is a book that I am going to cherish for the rest of my life. If you are reprinting it (hopefully hardbound sewn binding; cant stand the amazon print-on-order quality), I will be keen on getting a new copy. Thanks once again for what you are doing through St. Irenaeus Ministries!
Yul Brynner! XD
Love the humor you bring to this most serious topic. Keep up the good work! and thank you!
Thanks! God bless you! Incredible video
If there will ever be a part 2 you should include NCB/NCV, CCB/NCB, CCSS, Navarre, Paulist, Berit Olam and Sacra Pagina.
Wow that was the most enjoyable and thought provoking essay on study Bibles I ever listened to. What an interesting gentleman, who reads off Hebrew, Greek, Latin, like how hum. I can only wish for such a brain.
I honestly don't know what category I fall under. Most of my Christian theology has been Protestant based but as of late I been looking into Catholicism. Contrary to what I believed, Catholicism offers a way back to the church. I still have some hangups about some things but been going to Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation after 54 years. It's a journey for sure.
So anyhows, I picked up The Ancient faith study Bible. It's pretty cool for a dailey reader. It's not Catholic as far as the more OT books but it's packed full of comments from the church fathers. Irenaeous, Origen, Justin Martyer, Clement, Jerome, and alot more.
And next on my list is picking up the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible. I hoping it brings light to some of my questions.
Happy Bible studies children of God
🤚for the Orchard reprint. Where do I order? 😉
Thank you for your faithfulness to Sacred Scripture and the Faith!
Lol, I can't believe I am laughing at very subtle theological sarcasm that most other humans would just blankly stare at, but I love it. Keep up the great videos. I just downloaded my NETS Septuagint from one of your last ones. Waiting for someone to post Q so I can download that too!
This channel is a field of information. Some of these commentaries I would love to obtain.
Thank you for the in-depth views as a regular person well, no wonder I’m so lost.
Me..,again... I bought the Ignatius Study Bible a few years ago, to use in a Bible study, but am only just now really beginning to use it... I’m doing a self directed study on Romans.... The print is difficult for me to see, but it’s great. I’ve bern a fan of Scott Hahn for years....The scholarship is impeccable.
The Ignatius Study Bible is lightyears ahead of the Catholic Study Bible.... That’s for sure. I just wish it were not so bug...The hardback is hard for small hands to manage.. but worth the effort
Love your videos. I am wanting to learn more about the Bible and the Catholic religion. Thank you!
I hope you get more subscribers... look forward to seeing your content.
A man who references himself in history makes himself little to know more
I love and respect your faithfulness to the scriptures. It seems from where I stand that almost the whole evangelical world (I’m a Protestant) has gone head long after the critical scholars who approach the scriptures as a corpse with a scalpel complete with clinical detachment.
I try to study and learn the history of the pre critical church to hopefully discover where they went wrong. But I love the Holy Bible and I approach it as it is indeed the very words of God. God bless you for the reverence and faithfulness to the scripture that you advocate
This man is hilarious! Loved it!
Thank you TeD very much for all your insight. I’m going to download the study Bible you recommended and I’m looking forward to the brand new version of Scott Hans‘s old testament that’s coming out the next year. I already have his old testament from Ignatius press God bless you and keep you
I'd love to see Orchard reprinted. Godspeed.
Although I am Lutheran (and a quite catholic-minded one), I would love to have that commentary by Orchard. I try to have the really essential Catholic, Lutheran, and, to lesser extent, Calvinist commentaries and study Bibles in my personal library.
And by "essential" I mean BELIEVINGLY Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, and Reformed/Presbyterian, NOT modernist rubbish (for rubbish all of that unbelieving stuff really amounts to)..
@@gbantock Ignatius is a really decent modern study Bible but sadly only New Testament. Although there's individual publications book by book from Ignatius which are really good. Also check out Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture (again quite expensive) and Lapide's Great Commentary (Mainly NT)
😅👌Wow, this was an amazing video. You must have put a LOT of thought and work into this. Thank you so much, I learned a lot + loved the parts about commentaries needing to "be faithful".
I own dozens of different study Bibles and can't stand progressive commentaries anymore. I did for years.... Not anymore 😡
I just ordered the Haydock and the Orchard, thanks to you. 👍 Can't wait to dive into them.
I agree: The Ignatius New Testament study Bible is ... A Jewel.
Take care and God bless 🌹
I love this guy.
Orchard used to be my favorite, (and still holds a place of reverence on my shelf and desk) but the three volume Commentary by Ronald Knox, along with his "On Englishing the Bible" have taken the place of the good Benedictine for daily fine print reading.
Yes, PLEASE: a reprint of Orchard.
Just found the Orchard on the Verbum app. Boy do I have some reading to do.
An Orchard Reprint would be awesome!
This is great! Thanks.
i love your channel.
Hi, Ted. Glad to know your educational videos. Any plan to discuss these?
1. Navarre Bible Commentaries
2. Ancient Christian Commentary in Scriptures (ACCS)
I’d be down either way sitting at the feet of the fathers, learning to read scripture like a Christian. Count me in.
Me, again.... I was blown away by your story of the two young men who lost their faith, due to what they were hearing in class.
Ok, I’m old...77 on 09-11... I geaduated from a small Methodist college, in 1965... I clearly remember hearing the same teachings, in my freshman year... It was awful.. So...by the time of my conversion ti tge Catholic Church, in the mid eighties, I was ready for Vatican III. Yikes!
Regardless of references, and notes, I do enjoy the JB as a reading Bible..
Thank you for a wonderful review of study Bibles... I truly enjoyed it, and learned more than a few things..
OS... Downloaded the Orchard...
Very helpful! I would also recommend Frederick Justus Knecht’s single volume A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture, republished by Austin Press in 2021. I have only just started on it, but my impression is that it will meet the Faithfulness requirements. And it’s a very good read.
The Ignatius NT Study Bible is the only study I own. ... My old Catholic Stidy Bibl (the blue one) disappeared when I moved, a month or so ago... No big loss, as I never used it...
I like the Ignatius NT Study Bible because it is based on the RSV, and I feel thst I csn trust Scott and Curtis to be faithful and true. Thsnks, guys. I just wish it were not so big, and thst my copy was in large print.
Haven’t heard anything for a while from this channel. Hope you’re healthy and safe.
Hi Ted,
I am not catholic. However, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You clearly are intellectually honest and have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The Holman Foundation has an edition of their Christian Standard Bible that incorporate the Ancient Church Fathers. It is a protestant bible with a catholic sensitivity. (I don't have one) Lastly, AMG has a great Hebrew and Greek Key Word Study Bible (I do have one). Please consider reviewing these on a future video. One side note; I completely agree with you about John MacAuthur and the ESV Study Bible. Thank you again!
One of the best videos on commentaries I have seen for some time. I didn't know about Orchard until now although I vaguely remember a mention of him while i was taking a class on Greek. I am going to try and track one down. What do you think of St. Augustine commentaries from sermons, etc. and Cornelius A Lapide?
Nice presentation. In regards to your comment on 'wishing' there was a Catholic study bible like the ESV, I would like to know WHY Catholicism hasn't bothered? I was brought up in the Catholic faith and lean towards their teachings over Protestantism, BUT I use the ESV Protestant study bible because the largest Christian denomination (Catholicism) have yet to put in the effort to supply such a great all in one study tool! Once again why the lack of effort?
Outstanding
Great information and sound teaching. 👍👍👍. That Orchard commentary looks interesting. An hour and half ago I didn't know it excited... See, I'm learning.
Thank you!
Yep! Me, too! Your hours of research are not in vain.
@@siministries I just bought a very good example of Orchard's Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture 1953. $20 from a theological seminary library.🤗
Thompson Chain Reference Bible and a well suggested all rounded commentary - TO BEGIN WITH
Could you review the Orthodox Study Bible?
From one fellow servant of the Lord to another, I am impressed with your video. Very detailed and exhaustive. Our ministry's mission vision, the City of God Ministry, is the evangelization formation mission aiding the Catholic church in evangelizing the faithful. We are also very passionate about Scripture. We hunger for knowledge and our formation and preaching heavily leans on the Scriptures.
This is one of my all time favourite videos, great outlay + plain explanation and a fantastic narrator :)
P.S. As a Muslim convert, it also helped me to find my perfect choice ; ESV Study Bible. I just feel re-born at the age of 40..
Yes, PLEASE reprint Orchard
I would love a reprint of Orchard, even though I finally tracked down an original copy.
Dr. DeClue told me about you. I am obsessed! I mean in the healthy no need for an exorcist, Aquinas approved way .😁
Love this and the video "What Bible Should I Use?"! Actually ended up watching them because my Old Testament professor recommended them as optional videos for our class. A month into class and after watching your videos, I kind of became upset that I only have full NAB Bibles and am now not sure I can wait much longer for Ignatius Press to release the OT version of their study Bible so I can have a full RSV set. I usually would not want to listen to over an hour and a half of a video about Scripture for fun, but you made this video feel more like 20 minutes. I love your passion and desire to keep Scripture beautiful and authentic without falling into the trap of being unreasonable and to not compromise the fact that this is the inerrant revelation of God Himself.
But I was wondering, in light on your comment about bishops needing to be more involved in Biblical scholarship, if you have had a chance to look into or have heard recommendations on the Word on Fire Bible. It is an RSVCE and they have been releasing it in chunks (they have released the Gospels in 2020 and just released Acts - Revelation this past January). I have only read Matthew - Luke so far, and it includes lots of homilies and essays by Bishop Robert Baron, some comments from Church Fathers and recent Catholic authors such as Flannery O'Connor, Thomas Merton, and GK Chesterton (I do wish there were more stuff from the Church Fathers in what I've read so far, but the stuff from the bishop is good). They literally say it isn't intended as a study Bible or a devotional - but an evangelical one, which I'm wondering if has been done before (I guess the Gospels themselves would have literally had this purpose) or is a more new or reemerged type of Bible.
So helpful!
Also what about Lapide's Great Commentary? Thank you for your work!
How about the
International Bible Commentary (1998) by Farmer;
The Paulist Biblical Commentary; and
Navarre Bible?
Do you recommend it?
Awesome! opinions on the Navarre Bible?
You’ve got a gift for making Scripture great again. I’d like to see the same for Orchard👍 MOGA 🤔
Hi thanks for this! Yes I would by the reprint
This video is brilhant!! God bless you so much. I would like to make a question: What is your opinion about The Littel Rock Catholic Study Bible deluxe edition? Your opinion is importante for me.
Would love to get my hands on on a hard copy of orchard
Ted, what do you think of The Great Commentary of Cornelius A' Lapide? all my most orthodox Catholic teachers and priests that I’d love to listen to all quotes from him.
Yes, I too would be interested in your view of Lapide.
Yes please for a reprint of orchard
I just found your channel and holy scriptura... lol... I have learned and picked up so much... if I had a top 5 channels...someone would be gone... I now have a better list of resources than I ever had... thank you. Btw, are you more centered on catholicism or theology...
I would absolutely love to buy a copy if you guys reprinted Orchard!
I'd like to see your review for EW Bullinger's Companion Bible. Haha
When do the sessions at the feet of the Church Fathers begin? I'm here, sharpened pencil in hand (literally, metaphorically), ready for the patristic exegesis you so casually mentioned at 24:26.
What do you think about the CTS New Catholic Bible? Is it worth looking into?
Very informative thank you. How would you rate The International Bible Commentary published by The Liturgical Press 1998?
There are some fairly reasonably priced copies of Bernard Orchard's commentary available from Biblio.com
Thanks for your presentation on Catholic study bibles. I used the Jerusalem Bible since the mid 70's. I also own an NAB study bible, NIV study bible, Oxford Annotated Bible (with Apocrypha), Ignatius Study Bible (New Testament), and recently purchased the Word on Fire Bible - Gospels. I agree with you on the NAB and NIV study bibles. I found the Jerusalem Study Bible notes more faithful and to the point than the Ignatius Study Bible. I was disappointed the the Ignatius Study Bible. It seemed to be trying to address in the notes some argument that I wasn't privy to, sometimes mentioning all these views that aren't traditional before eventually (sometimes) getting to a more traditional viewpoint. The editor seems to like finding "moral" interpretations (along the lines of Origen), that aren't apparent in the text. I found it confusing that the cross-references were both at the bottom of the text and embedded in the notes. The concordance was a pleasant surprise. I prefer to look for the literal, historical, and "typical" interpretations from the early fathers. I guess it depends what you are looking for in a study bible. I bought my wife a Great Adventure Bible because she wanted to understand the timelines found in the Bible. I also bought my daughter a Didache Bible; it works well for her. I bought the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, 2 volumes on the Gospel of Matthew because I was looking for commentaries written by the Fathers. I was surprised that the commentaries they collected on the Lord's prayer excluded my 2 favorite commentaries by the Fathers: Peter Chrysologus (the most elegant) and Cyril of Jerusalem (concise but complete). I guess ultimately it is good to have multiple references to get a more complete understanding of the scriptures.
I would purchase a re-printed copy of Orchard's Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture.
I didn't know about Orchard until now ;D
What do you think of the NAB study bible being standard for seminaries?
Would love to have the Orchard in print.
I am pretty much passionate about the Scriptures as well. Been doing expository preaching through the City of God Ministry we established here in Manila, Philippines, a couple of years ago in collaboration with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila.
