      PS Correction! I meant a Ted Chaing short story. I recently read an article that The Arrival filmmakers are adapting a Ken Liu short story, too, so that was stuck in my brain: www.theverge.com/2019/6/27/18761112/the-message-ken-liu-adaptation-arrival-producers-sci-fi-21-laps-filmnation x

    I read Poor things for a university class and it has stuck with me for 15 years and I couldn't remember the title and had been trying to find it. The fact that it pops up here has made my day! Now I'm going to find it at the library, scribd etc. I need to read it again.

    Andrew Scott is so perfect for Ripley!
    I'm half way through reading My Policeman by Bethan Roberts, which I MAY have mainly picked up because Harry Styles is going to star in the film.

    Tried to jot down many that I haven’t read and that appeal to me. I will give most anything a try but our rule in the house his you have to read before you watch. I think I’ve read about 2 percent of what you mentioned but I also have a few sitting on my shelves. I guess I’d better catch up on the British Baking Show before all of these series and films drop!! Thank you for giving such a list. Also, Jen, I wanted to send you a sincere thank you on your wig/scarf video and just seeing how you wear your hair every day. I have terminal cancer but, fortunately, the different chemo are keeping me up pretty well. One of the biggest consistent issues obviously is hair loss. This past year is the first time I’ve not been bald since 2014. So I’m just growing hair until my protocol changes and it starts falling out again. But seeing your videos (the older ones as well) gives me ideas on how to cover up when and if I need to. I don’t mind going out with a shaved head, but I do live in southern Washington State and it rains a lot and is pretty chilly. Always good to be prepared! So thank you for being such a positive light for those with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Your forthrightness has made me a bit more outspoken I believe as well. Take care! 💕📖📚

    Looking forward to the Essex Serpent, the new The Talented Mr. Ripley, Poor Things, Leave the World Behind, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and A Kind of Spark :). I'm luke-warm about the adaption of His Dark Materials (I just can't get over the fact that the actress they picked displays nothing of Lyra's personality). Thanks for the informative video, Jen! Happy Monday!

    I need to start watching His Dark Materials again. I don't know if I'll be able to watch Pachinko, but I loved the book. Ooh, Essex Serpent, and I bet some of my acquaintances will see the adaptation, because of Hiddleston. I'm glad you're not cynical about adaptations even though a lot of them are bad or mediocre. I hear a lot of people dismissing immediately and it bugs me.

    This is probably one of the most useful booktube videos I've ever watched. I ended up writing down both books and movies/tv shows that I want to watch, plus movies/tv shows that I want to recommend to friends based on their tastes. I'm particularly excited about the adaptations of Conversations With Friends and Leave the World Behind. Mrs. March sounds great as both a book and movie, and I am a big fan of Elizabeth Moss. Thank you for your work on this list!

    So excited to see Passing! I loved the Vanishing Half and thanks to your recommendations I am also planning to read Passing and then watch the adaptation too (hopefully soon)! The Secret Lives of Church Ladies, Mrs March, and Leave the World Behind have also been on my tbr for a while because of you too so I'll likely watch the adaptations of those as well after I read them.
    PS: I loved the Sister Who Ate Her Brothers! My favourite story was the Woman and the Glass Mountain but they were all so wonderful and The House that Was Filled With Ghosts left me craving the tea in the story so bad haha.

    Have read Pachinko, think it's a good as everyone says it is. Totally intrigued about Station Eleven, loved the book but felt there was a ton of symbolism that was going over my head. I almost felt it needed studying. Most interested in My Name Is Leon. I love kit de waal, and have been meaning to read this for a while. Now I've realised it's read by Lenny Henry that's next in my list to listen to! Thanks for all your work in putting this together!

    I know what you mean, I adored Station 11 but now it feels a bit too close for comfort. I’ll probably watch, but I will have to see how I feel when it comes out. Also, when I absolutely love a book I sometimes can’t bear to watch the adaptation in case they “got it wrong” compared to my imagination. 😂

    Excited for the Essex Serpent and the Power - not read either of those, but would be interested in watching adaptions of them funnily enough. I wonder how they will handle Frances in the adaption of Convos with Friends. I found her to be so manipulative and dislikable, especially reading the story from her perspective, so it'll be intriguing to see how she is depicted. Also looking forward to seeing the person who plays Nick, because I thought he was pretty sexy.

I know that's a very contentious opinion..Absolutely ADORE Frances Ha! Thank you for a lovely video. So many exciting things to look forward to. Just one thing I wanted to mention, however. You said when you were talking about Leave the world behind by Rumaan Alam that the white family was suspicious of the black family on the doorstep and this was racist. Why is this racism? Wouldn’t anyone be suspicious of someone who randomly showed up on their doorstep and told them something obscure? Why is it automatically branded racist. Just because they’re white? Talking to someone black. No other reason.

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  3 роки тому +3

      It’s a novel about class and race; the main characters are racist.
