Love this! My dad is swedish my mom is mexican and I speak spanish, German, and understand swedish. White as can be but my dark eyes and family interactions give me away? And I get so many questions it's like, yo, im from a suburb in chicago. Not Sweden or mexico or wherever. From illinois. Stop guessing my life off of skin and "other"." What kind of other are you?"

i always get scared to ask this question bc i wasn’t born in america and i don’t look american so i get how it feels to be asked this question, but i like really wanna know? not bc i think you’re an “other” but just bc other places and cultures and things interest me and it’s nice to finally get some diversity and ppl who are more like me
I think the question is not "Where are you really from?" but "what is your ethnicity?" or "what is your ethnic background?" Yes, it sounds a bit weird, but it's more respectful than rejecting someone's answer of where they're from and asking them to align their place of origin to your expectations.
Sorry if it sounds agressive, the poem just left me a little fired up xd.
