Definitely a film you must see at least 3 times and you still will be like What did I just watch, and you will watch it again. When it over you will still be like What and that's just how it is. It's a What movie.

Am I just tripping or did this turn into christian propaganda halfway through?

Yeah, she just jumped to the conclusion that Great Hunger = religion (more specifically christianity) without properly explaining where that idea comes from or how it affects the meaning of the movie. I'm all for different interpretations but this one feels very reductive, and failing to account for the cultural context that the movie comes from

@@jnetwork3232 I guess passive aggressive comments about someone else isn't wrong in the bible or something. Jesus would approve of your behaviour for sure.

I think it’s quite sad that you said Hae Mi has given up in your final act section. Seeing her with disdain and saying that’s she’s been “infected” is just the mindset that Jong Su fell into as Hae Mi became more attached to Ben. That’s why his final words to her were so cruel.

Claiming Hae-mi lowers her moral standarts and “gives up” in perhaps one of the most poignant scenes where she takes her top off and dance almost in total freedom and oneness with life and nature as nihilistic kinda makes your argument self-contradictory.

Burning is a film that can be watched on so many levels.

This is a very interesting interpretation, I never thought to look at it through a religious lense. I appreciate the new perspective, very well done too. I disagree on some things, but I agree this is a movie about moral corruption.
I personally see Jong Su killing Ben as his redemption. That was the moment he became the protagonist. He was living in a world without meaning, and in that moment he took its meaning back. Murder is wrong, but killing isn’t always. Ben was going to keep doing what he was doing, Jong Su just put an end to it the only way he could. That is justified and rightful killing to me.
