Interesting fact: Tobal series (yes, BOTH of the games) and Ehrgeiz are both HUGE in Russia. Out of all countries out there, Tobal 2 and Ehrgeiz have the most biggest and most loyalest fan communities in Russian Federation. Since their initial release and all the way up until mid-2000s, they actually in all seriousness regularly held Tobal 2 and Ehrgeiz tournaments throughout the country in general and in Moscow city in particular (also Eretzvaju). Russian tourney players at fighting games actually rate and cherish Tobal 2 extremely highly, so much so that they put it on pretty much same level with Virtua Fighter series by the sheer level of complexity of the fighting mechanics and overall balance. Both Ehrgeiz and Eretzvaju were very huge and popular in Russia too until mid 2000s at the very least.
***** BTW, I don't know if you have ever noticed this/know about this, but...Square and Dream Factory held an official promotional Ehrgeiz championship back in the days. And they included that info in the credits, so if you play story mode you'll see the official champion's name. It's actually a pretty notorious and famous tourney fighter in the worldwide fighting commune. I won't spoil it, though. What I'm trying to say here, is that your approach to Ehrgeiz as a "very masher brawler" is quite incorrect at it's core, since in all actuality Ehrgeiz is quite deep in it's mechanic and balance. My point is - I dunno about what types of games you personally prefer to play, but in a professional worldwide tourney fighter commune Ehrgeiz was always highly rated, adored, and sought-for. I never met any serious tourney fighters who'd treat Ehrgeiz as "brainless brawler" or "low-level masher for casuals". Too bad not many so-called "modern gamer" people actually know about it/understand it, though (mainly because they never tried to actually learn the game any further than just simple buster sword spam or Tifa random button mash). Ironically, Eretzvaju has pretty much the same problem of being very under-appreciated and extremely underrated by the mass audience because absolute majority of those people played utterly crappy "Evil Zone" localization (which was GARBAGE in comparison to the original game) of it and thus based their opinion off of that. When typical middle-level gamer plays Evil Zone and sees that it has two buttons in the control panel, he/she immediately makes a picture for himself/herself in their mind about this game being super-casual. That is where the main problem lies. It is not that simple even one slightest bit. That game is actually quite deep for what it represents visually, it a pretty well made fighting game, all aspects-wise. But people base their opinions on ultra-shitty "Evil Zone" (a heavily cut, censored and altered "localization") and not the "Eretzvaju" original (which is a much MUCH superior experience). What I'm trying to say here is that it's not necessarily that the game might be bad, but that you might be wrong with your initial approach at judging/rating it. Such things happen and is definitely the case with Ehrgeiz and Eretzvaju, is what I'm saying.
man, I LOVED the dungeon mode. It's probably already been said considering how old this video is, but you could just throw items on the floor in the hotel room to save them for later, so I always left a couple of backup weapons and armor in case I died, and just swapped out characters every floor or so to ensure they were never underlevelled. Playing the game nowadays, it's true that the combat is repetitive, but this was like an action diablo on the PS1 with random dungeons and everything! I absolutely couldnt get enough of it.
This was the first fighting game I ever played. I beat it, over and over and over again. It's the only fighting game that I'm able to beat my brother to a pulp with. Did you know fish (eggs? or was it eyes? ) contain lipids? I learned that from the game. Ehgeriz contains a lot of good memories for me, it was the first time I saw the ff7 characters too boot. Django and the guy with the robot leg were my favorite characters, and once I was able to play FF7 I named Red13 guess what? Django! I mean from what I remember they basically were the same sort of creation. I haven't played Ehergiz in well... decades. I think I'd like to pick it up and play it again. God, you know, if I am remembering things right the dungeon quest was one of the first 3d 'rogue' like things. Edit: As just to prove to myself the fat guy eating ramen his ending is to eat and endless bowl of ramen. I know you have to take my word for it, but I did not look that up.
By far the best video you've produced to date. Having not heard anything about the games listed in this video, its something I certainly wish to try out one day.
9 year old me had no idea what a Sega Saturn was but I played so many hours of Virtua Fighter and Toshin Den. Many a jump stomps by Lau Chan and Kage has been made.
I remember playing the Ehrgeiz demo at my cousin's house, I wanted to get the game but could never find it anywhere even today. I find it stupid that the game is now on the Japanese playstation store but none of the other PSN stores. WHY?!?
Really cool to see this much insight to some older pieces of gaming history. I always knew about this game since Cloud was in it, but I never knew that much.
I grew up playing quest mode constantly. Now, as a die-hard fan of perma-death games like Nethack and Dungeons of Dredmor, I can say this was my first roguelike RPG. Ah, memories.
for sure... i love it. with the Toriyama character designs, fluid animation, and decent gameplay, it couldve potentially been a good DBZ game for the PS1 instead of the two piles of garbage we actually got...
+Spizzmattic Same here and ended up regarding it as one of the best 3D fighting games of all time. So smooth and easy to pick up....and the gradient polygons have aged very well.
The AI in ehrgeiz is not amazing by any standards and thats on hard mode so on normal is probably a joke. The game however is very reasonably balanced probably more then most fighters. Cloud was a mediocre character and yuffie was way better the strongest character hands down was koji matsuda. Only real bad character was Django due to the abuses you can do on him. The best thing about this game was also its curse in that everything is counterable it takes skill but when youve mastered it can really drag things out like counter throw ground rolling with eachother all day although it is hilarious to do, watch and try to keep going. My favourite thing is the combos/juggles due to the nature of the game they were very unique and unlike any other game. All in all it may not be the best fighter but its mega enjoyable and fun ill have to give this a whirl again sometime
Hundred percent agree with this. Both Ehrgeiz and Tobal were actually fairly deep games when played competitively by 2 players who knew the countering systems. Tobal 2 remains my favorite PS1 fighting game.
Wow I didnt even get a notification on these comments ever nice to see there is some randoms out there that know this game has far more to it then meets the eye other then myself
I always wanted to play Tobal, and it always looked so fun... though I never even got to try it out. But, on the plus side, I did actually get to buy and own Brave Fencer Musashi, so pretty worthwhile trade.
I rented Ehrgeiz once and had all I needed with this experience. It always stood to me as some hilarious oddball attempt of multiple modes thrown in. I just viewed the Quest mode as a Resident Evil kinda knock off in my mind at the time, but now I guess I was a bit off to call it that.
his complaint about the story mode's dying and item management sounds more like he just sucks at the game. I grew up playing Tobal 1 and Ehrgeiz. Beat them multiple times with no issue from the age of ten years old. These mechanics are only an issue if you don't play smart and save often. I mean, the system is very reminiscent of Dark Souls, where you have to backtrack to get your loot back. Git gud scrublord.
Nice, I dig that you threw some Suikoden music in there. Good shit, my man. Also, in all honesty, I played the shit out of Ehrgeiz when it came out. I was still wailing from the hole in my life after finishing FFVII, so combine that with being eight and you have yourself an enjoyable experience.
I don't think I could ever review a fighting game because I'd call every game mashy since all I do is mash buttons no matter what I'm playing. Congrats on the 1,000 subs! This is definitely your most polished video, and I hope you know that your effort really shows!

i feel like yoko would eventually inspired this one japanese movie called yo-yo girl cop. the protag is also some type of agent who uses a yo-yo as a weapon.
I loved this game. I played it on a arcade first. I had a lot of fun with it. Thinking back the adventure game part seems like a bad version of a elder scrolls game.
I loved this game so much, everything about it. So many good childhood memories. Even though I knew it was kind of terrible, just a blast to play in the Arcade. I disagree with the dungeon crawling comments....this is why games difficulty is being watered down so much..seems like everyone is more interested in non-challenging games now.
You have good editing skills and discussions on the mechanics, I hope you keep at it and find your own comedic voice that's different from other youtube game guys.
I loved Ehrgeiz, it had some really cool characters in addition to the FF7 characters. Though oh my god you just scratched the surface of the wrongness that dungeon crawl game was. Item management is one thing but items freaking broke. And items breaking mid use is stupid.
I actually like the dungeon crawler but...yeah. Having a trap room, seeing the little warning on the side of the screen and dreading every moment of it, until it breaks and the enemies WON'T STOP SPAWNING AND YOU DIE...yeah that's fair, game. Especially when it costs money to SAVE, *REAL* fucking fair, game.
Wanna talk broken? I wish one day someone would mention how Koji Masuda in Ehrgeiz can absolutely trash anyone with just one button. And I do I mean literally one button, no D-pad or movement input at all. You can literally take your hand off the D-pad, smash O, and utterly devastate anyone. Yes, even Cloud.
Never played Tobal and while I enjoyed the challenge of the Fighter portion of Ehrgeiz, I played the absolute fuck out of the dungeon portion. It even taught me how to eat healthy and the basics of the fucking stock market! Back in the days before I had ever played a Dungeon Crawler, this felt like something entirely new to me and I loved every second of it. Edit: Also, can we please get an updated version of Parasite Eve?! I mean, finish FFVII first at all costs...But damn, this game hasn't been on Squeenix's radar for the longest time...and it's so damn good!
I Preordered this Game and until this day I absolutely love it and everything in the game, the many styles of games, characters, graphics, the games and Art/Graphic style
Little did the viewers know that it would take Mr. Austin 3 years to finally release the video about The Bouncer.....

Cyka Blyat
jk that's neat
+Kawayolnyo I remember this game being huge in Poland too a couple of years ago! Guess we slavs have a similar taste in gaming, eh?
+Kawayolnyo "most biggest and most loyalest"
Sato
...and?

Dude I loved Ehrgeiz! Brings back so much nostalgia just listening to the sounds of it.
It's strange going back to an old video like this, since your style has changed a lot over the years.
Also, congrats on 1000 subs.
Yoyo Yoko using a yoyo is a reference to Sukeban Deka, where schoolgirl delinquent (sukeban) undercover detective Saki Asamiya uses a metal yoyo.
8 years later and square soft is still pimping FFVII on every corner.
This was the first fighting game I ever played. I beat it, over and over and over again. It's the only fighting game that I'm able to beat my brother to a pulp with. You are seriously underrated dude. The quality of your videos are way higher than other people with more subscribers. Hope you end up doing great
By far the best video you've produced to date. Having not heard anything about the games listed in this video, its something I certainly wish to try out one day.
bought both Tobal no1 and Ehrgeiz when i was a kid. Loved them both.
Brand New Quest teaches you the importance of nutrition and having a balanced diet.
Not gonna lie, that rpg mode looks pretty rad.
AND YEAH, DRAGONQUEST 8 WAS HELLA RAD AS FUCK
I loved this game. Mostly the quest mode. I found it a lot of fun.
Ehrgeiz was one of the best games ever from my childhood
Although I'm more into fighting games than rpgs, I did find it interesting that 1 of the guest characters in Tekken 7 whas Noctis from FF15
Putting DDR tracks and other video game music on a custom CD in the 90's. MY BOY!!!
I watched this and your Rocket Knight video, and you're fantastic! Completely destroyed my confidence in making videos. Can't wait to watch more!
Ehrgeiz is also the name of the ultimate weapon of Zell from FF8.
Wait wait. Screw the ff7 characters there's a fighting dog named Django in this!
Lmao
A fighting dog named Django which is really just a remodeled clone of Red XIII who's a character from...Final Fantasy VII...oh....
I thought it was the red wolf from ff7
BOKTAI!!
...Sorry, couldn't help myself. That's all I can think of when I see that name.
Isaac sussman Djoggo
omg ♡ the mention of demo discs gave me such nostalgia. they helped shape the gamer I am today
And what kind of gamer are you?
The dungeon mode was great. Kind of my first foray into rogue likes.
To be honest this was my favorite game as a kid. I loved it.
But Cloud?
Butt Cloud
But ALL of the FF7 characters!
9 year old me had no idea what a Sega Saturn was but I played so many hours of Virtua Fighter and Toshin Den. Many a jump stomps by Lau Chan and Kage has been made.

Really cool to see this much insight to some older pieces of gaming history. I always knew about this game since Cloud was in it, but I never knew that much.
Wasn't Sephiroth in Ehrgeiz as well?
Dang. Giving Dissidia a run for it's money!
And ZACK.... and.... fuck everyone else. ZACK
Ahhh you triggered my childhood memories i remember playing Ehrgeiz at the movie theaters arcade never seen the machine after that though.
Congrats on ONE-THOUSAND subscribers!
Ermahgerd its Ermahgeiz!
I grew up playing quest mode constantly. Now, as a die-hard fan of perma-death games like Nethack and Dungeons of Dredmor, I can say this was my first roguelike RPG. Ah, memories.
I was two and four when these games came out and back then graphics like this blew my tiny toddler mind.
Jesus Christ power stone 2 was amazing. I cannot believe that was the last time power stone ever happened.
this is not relevant anymore, Cloud is in smash, nothing is relevant anymore.
+Brian Silva True that.
Yes
No Tifa and sethorof ( I know my spelling is wrong but I don't feel like looking it up) though.
Mr. Skittles sephiroth
this doesnt have enough views... this is one of my fav watches!!!
Great vid dude. I remember reading stuff about Tobal No. 1 but never played it, or even saw it in the plastic.
EHRGEIZ really needs to be remade from the ground up. I don't care how bad people think this game was. It was amazing!
I love your videos now I must binge on them, and congrats on 1,000 subs!
i love that someone finally talked about Tobal No 1
for sure... i love it. with the Toriyama character designs, fluid animation, and decent gameplay, it couldve potentially been a good DBZ game for the PS1 instead of the two piles of garbage we actually got...
Just subbed recently. At the end of this video you had 1,000 subs... and now you have 100,000. It's well deserved because you're funny and awesome.
I bought Tobal #1 back in the day because it came with a playable demo for FFVII. Who'd a thunk I'd end up loving it!
+Spizzmattic Same here and ended up regarding it as one of the best 3D fighting games of all time. So smooth and easy to pick up....and the gradient polygons have aged very well.
Omg that menu sound! It drove me crazy!
The AI in ehrgeiz is not amazing by any standards and thats on hard mode so on normal is probably a joke. The game however is very reasonably balanced probably more then most fighters. finally someone who actually played the game
Wow I didnt even get a notification on these comments ever nice to see there is some randoms out there that know this game has far more to it then meets the eye other then myself
Item management is great kiddo.
+Raptor Jesus not when it's not done really well kiddo :^)
Raptor Jesus resident 4
It wasn't the best game, but it will always be a beloved member of the collection.
Congrats on 1,000 subs man!
I always wanted to play Tobal, and it always looked so fun... though I never even got to try it out. But, on the plus side, I did actually get to buy and own Brave Fencer Musashi, so pretty worthwhile trade.
First time watching your channel, really love your work!
The Forsaken Dungeon was really fun. I beat it a lot of times.
That video somehow did a good job making me want to play this.
This was the first game my father brought on ps1. Just remembered. I was 6 years old.
Still waiting for that episode on the bouncer
my first ps2 game :D
You're in luck!
HOLD THE FUCKING PHONE? What Final Fantasy game do I have to play to wear Commander Shepard's armor?
On second thought...
+Destructive Criticism Never have i saw someone back down so quickly.
+Arcadea what final fantasy game do i have to play in which the main character is a sasuke (from naruto) clone
You made it to the end of that horrible quest mode, You truly have the will of a warrior.
dude the guest mode was way above its time First ever Roguelite wish theyed make a Brand new Quest Remake
Still loving the Suikoden music in the background
Wow, I remember this game from when I was little
I remember when this game dropped. I love the arcade cabinet and I was probably like one of the 15 Americans that actually bought the ps1 port.
Just noticed the game on a Facebook post for the local retro game store and wondering “What is this!?”
his complaint about the story mode's dying and item management sounds more like he just sucks at the game.
+Hugo Okano so hostile
Nice, I dig that you threw some Suikoden music in there.
Good shit, my man.
Also, in all honesty, I played the shit out of Ehrgeiz when it came out. I was still wailing from the hole in my life after finishing FFVII, so combine that with being eight and you have yourself an enjoyable experience.
I remember playing ehrgeiz 15 years ago, The Minigames and dungeon mode Was memorable
Great game ruined by the save system
The menu noises set off my PTSD from playing this
I don't think I could ever review a fighting game because I'd call every game mashy since all I do is mash buttons no matter what I'm playing.
Congrats on the 1,000 subs! This is definitely your most polished video, and I hope you know that your effort really shows!
More like Air Guyz
actually laughed out loud at this
I was just thinking about this game the other day after playing the Dissidia FF NT beta. I knew it was real and not in my head. I just couldn't remember the name.
How do I keep ending up at this video? I'm not complaining bc I love it
I owned this game and it was the best game ever! It was so many things!
Yup Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie and Vincent are in it...
I know it wasn't very good, but I loved this game when it came out. I remember the first time I got to the final boss and, after the fact, found out how to actually beat it. So weird to go into a final battle and already see the credits going. :-)
06:00 Sir you got a subscribe from the power of that menu noise alone
Real talk Ehrgeiz is a deeper fighting game in retrospect. If you know how to play and master the techniques. Pump the difficulty on hard or higher and give it a try. Especially when vs a skilled player. Legit bang out sessions. I have just as much fun with the fighting as Tekken Tag or Tekken 4.
I pretty much liked the quest mode in Tobal 1 and 2. Makes a diff in fighting games
I was only able to play Ehrgeiz via-demo disc on the PS1 😅
i feel like yoko would eventually inspired this one japanese movie called yo-yo girl cop. the protag is also some type of agent who uses a yo-yo as a weapon.
I've only heard of this game because of the SGB Smackdown Sunday video on it.
I loved this game. I played it on a arcade first. I had a lot of fun with it. Thinking back the adventure game part seems like a bad version of a elder scrolls game.
Wait, what was the HD Final Fantasy 6 at the end from?
+Chronos Soul Really, the one at 9:02? They looked like Magitek armor
That's XIV, ya numpty.
James Brincefield that's not Cloud. It's Lightning with a Cloud costume from Lightning Returns FFXIII
I loved this game so much, everything about it. So many good childhood memories. Even though I knew it was kind of terrible, just a blast to play in the Arcade. I disagree with the dungeon crawling comments....this is why games difficulty is being watered down so much..seems like everyone is more interested in non-challenging games now.
the cake
is a lie.
You have good editing skills and discussions on the mechanics, I hope you keep at it and find your own comedic voice that's different from other youtube game guys.
5:59 That beloved sound, how I remember it so.
Oh hey, that last part is even more relevant today because of Sm4sh and Te7ken
But is 2018 it would have cost you real money to save, so in retrospect it is a great system >.>
I got Tobal no2. and the gfx are like in HD.
Mmmmm, that tasty suikoden 2 music in the background though
Jesus you guys grew so fast
Brand new quest was and is super fun. Just wish it was co-op
UGHHH U LOVE ALL THE GAMES I LOVE I NEED TO MAKE A RETROSPECTIVEEE
I always remembered this game as the playstation version of smash bros, or at least the closest we'd get for a very long time.
I knew there was a fighting game that included FF7 characters!! Thanks for putting this to rest for me!
i like that he likes tobal no 1 more than this, brave fencer musashi, the bouncer...
I had a ps2 demo disk with this game on it. I liked it in bite sized bits
8:59 and 9:09 what games are those?
Never played Tobal and while I enjoyed the challenge of the Fighter portion of Ehrgeiz, I played the absolute fuck out of the dungeon portion. It even taught me how to eat healthy and the basics of the fucking stock market! Back in the days before I had ever played a Dungeon Crawler, this felt like something entirely new to me and I loved every second of it.
Edit: Also, can we please get an updated version of Parasite Eve?! I mean, finish FFVII first at all costs...But damn, this game hasn't been on Squeenix's radar for the longest time...and it's so damn good!
I remember renting this from Hollywood video
This game was not that bad the rpg mode was awesome
I Preordered this Game and until this day I absolutely love it and everything in the game, the many styles of games, characters, graphics, the games and Art/Graphic style
