You're right there Kevin. I've been to some fantastic locations but have had a heck of a time finding compositions and at the same time go to an area no so inspiring but find great shots. I guess a lot of it has to do with weather, light and the mood in which we're in at that time. cheers!
Adam, I have become a fan of your v-log. I have binge watched them all over the holidays and in so doing have seen your evolution. Throughout, your style and message remain consistent and true to form. 1) Stay in good shape because, it is not always a walk in the park to get to a location. 2) Being there is a huge part of the equation 3) The other parts include inclement weather, preparation, a bit of luck, steadfast determination and of course the right light! You have struck a good balance in the where, when, and why departments keeping the subject on the composition. You have avoided succumbing to the gear review monster. The What department is covered by simply being observant and attentive. Above all, you are a great story teller, and that coupled with the fantastic images will keep me happily coming back for more. As for the processing in Lightroom or Photoshop, it wouldn't fit with what I see as your core strengths. Storytelling and mentoring, seeing and understanding how light works in the outdoors, patience, etc... If I want to learn to use software there are plenty of Gen-X kids that spend their lives in front of a monitor I can ask. Your skills are much more valuable.

Love your work Adam. Today the silver birch image at 10.52 was my favorite. I think you'd have a ball down here in New Zealand. Plenty of variety in scenery within a small drive. Temperate forests, leading into swamps and farmland. Volcanic desert and mountains. The bubbling mud pools. The wild west coast beaches with either rocks or black iron sand and the white east coast beaches, and that's only the North Island lol. You can shoot the sun rising on one coast, potter about taking photos of waterfalls and having some lunch and a nap and shoot the sunset on the west coast later that day. I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed :)
Wow! I just came back from a morning photo outing to a local park thinking to myself that there is a lot to find inspiration in locally and I came across this video. I too had a foggy, misty morning to enjoy in a woodland park just minutes from home. The content on your channel (and a few of your colleagues) is helping me out of a rut and back into inspired photography.
Nice video! It seems, it dosen´t matter where you go Adam, you always have some gorgeous shots every time. I really loved those 2 images with the small Creek.(even if you somewhat hesitated) Both so beautiful monochromic and subdued. Also your silver Birch and those ´Troll´ Tree images were marvelous.
Your video production is top notch. The B roll is great. Your photography is excellent. Very inspiring. Look for the light, then find a composition the fits the light. Yes yes yes.

I've walked around Deer Lake hundreds of times, and I still think it's one of the most low-key amazing places in the lower mainland. Fantastic video of a place that is near and dear to me, and has been an integral part of basically my whole life.

Yes, we have many downed trees and still snow on the ground. Lot's of potential ice shots...I failed miserably...don't know how to shoot ice on trees I guess.
It was fun to see you find so many compositions in a smaller local area like this! The atmospheric drone footage was really great. I like that you photographed some smaller scenes as well, the ferns looked very nice!

So much learned here Adam. Composition in chaotic environments by far is something I need to enhance in my photography. Fog adds an important dimension that helps to hide a lot of the chaos. Studies note that repeating names/concepts three times help you to remember them. "Shoot for the light. Shoot for the light. Shoot for the light." Thanks again for a great lesson and journey.

Beautiful photos! This should inspire me to start looking more to my parks instead of having to save up to travel to fancy places! I live in London you see
London, Ontario? or London UK? I would imagine London UK might be a challenge although there are some lovely parks in and around the city. EWhen I first started out as a pro I spent most of my free time at the local public garden. I ended up with quite a body of work and eventually got into working gardening magazines. Travelling is great but it is nice to find a local spot to sneak awat to now and then.
Some nice moody shots in there. Red jacket on the path is a winner :) Have you considered doing a video on your post-processing/editing workflow? Would love to see your process for getting the most out of moody shots like these... and I was thinking the same thing when watching your Little Qualicum Falls vid a while back. Happy new year!

Thanks, Steve! I switched my corded remote for a cordless one so that I can trigger the camera from a distance without running back and forth. The tripod head is also new that I thought I would try since I seem to be doing equal amounts of video + photography.

From my experience with B&W in most cases, you want some pure white and pure black within the image, with of course as many shades of grey in between. This is a generalization as I've seen some exceptional B&W photography with very few pure whites or blacks. For my purposes, I usually try to keep the brightest areas of the image within the frame and not leading a viewers attention out of the frame. At some point, I may put together a video on composition, but I hope this helps just a little?

I have a right-hand drive Mitsubishi Delica L400 great for photography but not great if you live in an area that cant maintain them. I guess it really depends on how much you want to spend. Some of the older Chevy Safari Vans or even the dodge caravans would work okay although might not have much clearance for rough roads. Personally, I prefer vans over a truck, but a small truck with a camper of a cap on the back is perfect.

Great video! I’m not a videographer and I never will be, but I really liked your editing where you went from a video scene to a photographic image and visa versa. You got some gorgeous images, even those you said wouldn’t win any prizes I’d have been proud of. I’m fairly lucky where I live in the U.K. as I’m within an hour of the Lake District, Peak District and Yorkshire Dales. The closest of all is The Forrest of Bowland, although I haven’t been fit enough to take advantage of it yet this year. However it’s a gorgeous area, especially in cold or foggy weather.
Thanks, Mark! It's nice to try and dissolve the original scene with my photographic interpretation, I think it helps give the viewer some insight into the surrounds and perhaps the thought process. You're lucky to live near to some remarkable British locations. I've never heard of Bowland, I'll have to look it up. Generally speaking yes to the focus. Best bet is to focus, take an image and then check the focus on the back of your camera.
Great video :) definitely always a challenge taking photos in well known territory but you got some pretty cool shots!

Thank you AM! I am sure that for some the challenge might be harder than for others since not everyone has a local park, but I can honestly say that my best images have come from areas close to my home.

Beautiful photos! This should inspire me to start looking more to my parks instead of having to save up to travel to fancy places! I live in London you see
London, Ontario? or London UK? I would imagine London UK might be a challenge although there are some lovely parks in and around the city. EWhen I first started out as a pro I spent most of my free time at the local public garden. I ended up with quite a body of work and eventually got into working gardening magazines. Travelling is great but it is nice to find a local spot to sneak awat to now and then.

Thanks for the local adventure. Do you have an infrared or radio controller on your Nikon hot shoe? Also, I don't recall the video head on the tripod, that's a long extension. Love the leaves and the ferns.
Thanks, Steve! I switched my corded remote for a cordless one so that I can trigger the camera from a distance without running back and forth. The tripod head is also new that I thought I would try since I seem to be doing equal amounts of video + photography.
Great images Adam, gorgeous quality of light and loved the reflected skeletal trees in the creek. Your little Mavic sounds tough compared to mine! Mine starting complaining at 2 degrees this afternoon!!

It certainly turned out to be a great day for you. Of coarse and great viewing for us.:) may i ask what helps with a good black and white so as to balance the composition? Many thanks in advance
From my experience with B&W in most cases, you want some pure white and pure black within the image, with of course as many shades of grey in between. This is a generalization as I've seen some exceptional B&W photography with very few pure whites or blacks. For my purposes, I usually try to keep the brightest areas of the image within the frame and not leading a viewers attention out of the frame. At some point, I may put together a video on composition, but I hope this helps just a little?

I have a right-hand drive Mitsubishi Delica L400 great for photography but not great if you live in an area that cant maintain them. I guess it really depends on how much you want to spend. Some of the older Chevy Safari Vans or even the dodge caravans would work okay although might not have much clearance for rough roads. Personally, I prefer vans over a truck, but a small truck with a camper of a cap on the back is perfect.
I live in New Hampshire. Actually looking at the Ford Transit Connect. Dodge Caravan as well. Thanks again.

Great video! I’m not a videographer and I never will be, but I really liked your editing where you went from a video scene to a photographic image and visa versa. You got some gorgeous images, even those you said wouldn’t win any prizes I’d have been proud of. I’m fairly lucky where I live in the U.K. as I’m within an hour of the Lake District, Peak District and Yorkshire Dales. The closest of all is The Forrest of Bowland, although I haven’t been fit enough to take advantage of it yet this year. However it’s a gorgeous area, especially in cold or foggy weather.
Thanks, Mark! It's nice to try and dissolve the original scene with my photographic interpretation, I think it helps give the viewer some insight into the surrounds and perhaps the thought process. You're lucky to live near to some remarkable British locations. I've never heard of Bowland, I'll have to look it up. I'm sure you've watched Simon Baxters woodland photography video, some beautiful forest there, lots of character. Cheers!
