Nitro brother love the videos. A company named Hooby Soul which sells 20T, 21T, and 22T clutch bells for the HPI Savage XL. I own all of them an they work well also. Keep up the good videos nitro gang out...
whats ups my fellow Nitro Brother! thanks for watching my dude. Let me give you an update on the taller clutch bell issue I'm avenge with this truck. I have sourced a 17T bell (16 T is stock), problem is without replacing the spur to a smaller one you cannot fit anything above 17T, there just is no space to move the motor and get the proper gear mesh. I have come to the conclusion that it's far easier to get a smaller spur and keep the stock 16T bell, this will give me even better results overall.
Cool video, I've been driving electrics since I was a kid. Now at 38 thought I would try nitro. Got a tmaxx on the way. I hear alot of people say stay away from the top fuel traxxas makes. Would sidewinder racing be ok for this truck. Thanks for your help!
hey bro! Welcome to the NitroGang with your new T-maxx. Take your time and break it in correctly and don't run lean. I highly recommend Byron 20% nitro 12% oil fuel. That's been what I typically always run (until now). Sidewinder is normal too. To be honest the tune is set to the fuel you run, so it won't be a large impact overall, for normal driving. As long as you don't get dirt into the motor in any way. Hit me up here if you have issues with the T-maxx.
My honest advise, as someone who owns a Traxxas nitro: CAncel your order before its too late. The 3.3 is a piece of shit, the clutch sucks, the T-Maxx is an outdated design that's overweight, ill handling even by monster truck standards, and prone to breaking in half. Cancel the T-maxx and get a Mad Crusher GP instead. Far better nitro M/T. Sidewinder is good fuel though, it's what I use in my car engines.
@@FalconWing1813 Pretty much everything about it. * The conrod lacks a bronze bushing in the small end, causing premature wear and catastrophic rod failures on the regular. This is how I got my Slayer for cheap; chassis was mint but the rod was egged out so bad the engine wouldn't even run. Fun fact, this rod is so inadequate that it sometimes breaks during break-in due to no fault of the user. * They take too much meat out of the rod when they carve lightening grooves down the middle, further exascerbating the above issue. These engine really are bad about throwing rods and you can see examples of it going back over a decade if you google 'TRX3.3 rod failure'. * The carbs do not hold a tune for shit. My OS 18CV-RX will hold a tune better than a smallblock chevy V8. I literally only have to adjust it twice a year, and that adjustment is very small; 1/4 turn on the HSN leaner or richer depending on what the ambient temp is doing. Richer in winter, for denser air, and leaner in summer for thinner air. My Dynamite 19T doesn't need tuned except maybe every 2 months or so. My TRX3.3 needed fiddled with EVERY SINGLE BLOODY TIME I STARTED IT. * The main bearings aren't very good either. I rebuilt my 3.3 with the stock top end and a Davis Diesel hopup conrod; got about a gallon and the main bearings failed on it. When that happened it started sucking more air in around the crankshaft than through the carb; engine ran like shit at anything but full throttle and was a right pain to start at all. This is when I said 'fuck this POS' and replaced it with a Dynamite 19T 5-port. Costs less than a 3.3, re-uses EZ-Start, direct drop-in. The end result is an engine that even nitro diehards that have been doing this since the early naughts can't even get them to play nice. If you do have one that works, it's by pure bloody chance. They're terrible engines and they are solely responsible for a lot of anti-nitro sentiment amongst the hobby from people who's sole experience was a TRX3.3.
hey bro! Me too, it's nowhere to be found. I think the easiest solution would be to forget the high speed gear upgrade and just get a smaller spur gear. This thing has enough power to pull a taller gear ratio, so it's to a problem.
hybrid32494 Hey man! Today I got lucky...I found 1 on eBay. I think the upgrade gear it will still help the top end speed plus the taller bell you mentioned. I really didn’t know there’s an upgrade gear for it until I watched your video.
I generally use 25% on my RC cars and 25% on Helis, anything from 10 up on Planes, though the oil content on the Heli fuel is way higher than planes or cars!
Hola amigo, si quieres llegar a los 50mph, te recomiendo cambiar spurt (47T) y campana (19T), y tambien modifica el silicon de los diferenciales, llevalo a 30.000 cts ambos, y veraz mejores resultados. Yo tengo varias Hpi Savage XL, y ya he realizado varias pruebas. saludos
great video hope to see it hit 50! also I was wondering if you trust the temperature gauge that you can see on the traxxas tqi app. my revo is running to hot and it is not to lean.
I use both temp gun and app they are equal sometimes 2 off but super close. My 3.3 hits 240 and it's stupid rich almost won't grab second gear it's a trx thing they run hot
hey bro! how you doing! Glad you got to see this savage in action, btw there are many other very good videos on this truck, I think you'll appreciate. NitroGang!! and yes, these tires hav not let me down, they r super great traction, low ballooning, and good high speed stability.
Hey Man, i have this truck and a 4.6 that i let sit for a year or 2, do you own a shop or service nitro's? Your videos are awesome and makes me want to get back into it.
I own 2 Savage XL 5.9 a RS4 and a Trophy with a 4.0 engine, my problem with these old cars that the rubbers on the card needles deteriorate, do you have a solution for that? very difficult to find replacements, something to do a video on??
Hey my fellow Savage XL brother! Personally I have never had a problem with he rubber seal on the High speed needle going bad, it does tend to swell up a little bit, I will grant that. But it is still holding a normal vacuum on my older nitros. I will have to look into this in the future, only way to fix it is to source another o-ring or get another carb, which is a waste of money, I sure you know. RS4 for th win my dude!! BTW, HPI is back, they are once again selling nitros here in the USA, I just made a video about it, check it out, (its my newest video on the channel).
@@hybrid32494 saw your video on the new HPI hopefully also parts as most is sold out. Had a broken high speed gear was lucky to find one for a decent price in Hong Kong! Enjoy your video’s a lot have been restoring all these cars after many years of neglect! Have also the Thunder Tiger EK4 and MTA4 great fun
@@hybrid32494 actually in one of my savage xl the rubber seal on the low speed needle was so dried out that the needle spontaneously came out during a test drive was lucky not to loose it!
we are going for 50 MPH soon my dude. I am sourcing the high speed 3rd gear set and a clutch bell. Maybe I'll run both, I don't care, we gonna get the most out of this no matter what.
hahaha, yes!! Although honestly I've run extreme high oil content and if you just tune to compensate it's fine. Really no big deal. Personally I like the discontinued BYRON 20% nitro 12% oil the most.
@@hybrid32494 Yeah I have heard Byron's is the best. I have really considered switching over to Bones brew as it is so cheap, but when I saw the price for shipping, it is basically the same as getting Torco 20% which is what I use.
@@hybrid32494 you can tune to compensate but performance is still limited and the tuning window is smaller as well as worse fuel economy. I like my bones brew 30/10. $96 for 3 gallons free shipping .. Cant beat it
I got one of those Savage XL (orange/black one) but i broke my piston/sleeve (broke on wrist pin) and i dont find one kit here on Canada.... So it still in His box for now +/- 8yr....
hey buddy! I cannot tell you for sure 100% but I would say that any OS 21 size carb will fit. It's usually all the same style of carb mounting. I've never owned a big block OS engine, but usually the blocks are the same anyway.
hey buddy! I have since realized that my own fuel bottle's filler neck threads onto their quart containers. So It seems their quarts could also readily accept any fuel filler, even if you don't purchase one form them. I just realized this and will put it in my newest videos. Nitrogang!!
I would say yes for sure. Its legit a heavy square object at the highest possible location and terrible for speed passes. But the savage still killed it.
Hey nitro guru! I hav a question for you, i have a savage 4.6 and bought it with broken pullstart. It had a axial pull start in which are discontinued. I noticed this engine has 11mm hex and internal one way bearing. Do you know the correct pullstart for this engine? Thanks bro love your page!!!
hey bro, nope! Ive almost never blown a plug out in all my years of nitro. IN fact the only major motor issue I've had was with the Reeve 18 TZ. Even this, when it's running lean it just bogs down, but the plugs are fine, I check them every quart of fuel or so.
@@hybrid32494 You've been lucky. I've really never done it while running. Just my luck yesterday I guess. It's been a good used truck so far. Previous owner put a dynamite .19 in it.
@twinturbotony93 if your dynamite started melting glow plugs, your inner crank bearing could be falling apart. Mine did the same stuff the other day. Not sure if you mean "blow out" as "melted" but it kinda sounded similar to what happened to mine. I would take it apart and check that inner crank shaft bearing.
30% isn’t less safe. It’s actually safer because it runs cooler and has a bigger tuning window. And whenever you change fuel even if it’s the same percentage but a different brand you need to re-tune your engine. You ESPECIALLY need to retune when changing nitro percentage. And if you put some street tires on there you’ll get a extra mile per hour or two as well. You’re getting better speed with your 25% because it’s Byrons and Byrons is the best. You should have ran 30% Byrons
Man I need to be friendlier to people who approach me when I'm out with my rigs. I always get super paranoid at the 'how much did that cost?' question.
@@hybrid32494 hey man could you help me tune my revo via a video chat I just subbed and will be happy to pay for the help. It was tuned perfect just no wheelies and I tried factory settings from Traxxas site but I can't get it dialed in. Of course all my LHS are closed cuz of Covid. Please help
hey my dude! thanks for watching, Nitrogang!! So I had this thing upto 46 MPH, which is really fast for a stock truck. My goal is still 50 MPH, and I'll be getting a taller clutch bell and we will make it happen. I eventually richened it up a little as you suggested, and got the same results, I'm already running in the optimal heat range at this point, you know.
hey man! Yes, you could get a reverse module for these. They sell for like 50 bucks ebay, it's a pretty cool item, includes a reverse mixer and a third servo, along with the module itself.
hey dude! Generally with warmer weather you just gotta tune to make sure the engine does not run hot, this means richening it. Overall only the temps matter.
I know bro! I'm working on getting a taller clutch bell, that might give me more speed actually. This think pulls third gear with no problem, so it should not be an issue at all. I cant find the 3rd gear speed upgrade anywhere, not even ebay. 50 MPH is gonna happen one way or another bro. thanks for watching!
hey man, thanks for watching. Based on my opinion this engine does not need a rebuild, it runs pretty well. IT's got good compression and therefore it's ok. As long as the compression is ok you can run these for a long time.
hey bro. The reason most people bash Traxxas Top Fuel is because it's got a very high oil content, if you noticed, the bottle does not disclose it at all. IT's commonly accepted that it's around 16%, this is extremely high. It's good for break in for beginners, but you will get very sluggish performance with it. Considering this fuel I ran is 10% oil, and there is still loads of oil coming from the pipe, you know.
Just watched your video 5.9 sounds great just thinking if you changed your nitro engine weather the mgt 8.0cc what to give you the extra power and and speed or if OS do a nitro engine that big and has more power just a thought bro have a great day 🍺😎🇬🇧💪
hey man! That is a great point, I will make sure to point this out to people in a future video, thank you. I actually figured that out myself after making this video, it's very useful and easy. thanks for watching!
hey bro, you can still use aircraft fuel for nitro cars, but it's not common, the plane fuel generally is very high oil content bc of the sustained high RPM engine operation, you know. But to be honest with ya, I noticed no difference from 25-30 % nitro. I'm going to be testing other RCs to get a better feel for it.
Hey bro you should get a way to test your nitro fuel, seems like you got some over rated fuel 👍 your Savage running awesome though. I've had the same thing happen I've ordered some super cool sounding fuel and it turned out about the same as the normal fuel i was using. I'm really hoping to see your mgt soon 👍👍👊💪
hey man! Yes, I have, their fuel is fine if you know how to properly tune a motor. It tends to have more oil in it than normal to make sure beginners in the Nitro hobby have a little more margin of error you know. For racing application you do not want Traxxas fuel on the other hand.
Love/hate tuning nitro engines, especially cars, often the adjustment needed is fine, In Scotland we say turn it a baw hair (ball hair) clockwise or anti, or it's just a Baw hair off, lol
theres no special fuel, you should let the engine run richer, so let more full in de carb, bei turning de highspeed needle a half or an fourth of an turn OUT
hey man! thanks! I have a couple more great vids on this savage, I ran it against some electric at my local RC track, pretty much destroyed many of them with the 3-speed!
hey buddy, thanks for watching. The reason people always talk negatively about traxxas Top Fuel is because it's commonly accepted that it's a very high oil content, if you notice they don't disclose the oil % on the fuel. Most people agree it's around 16% oil. It's good for break in and all, but not a top performance fuel overall. Otherwise it's fine, don't let me Bash fuel without proper cause, this is the cause here.
hey bro! The thing is, with any other camera other than a go-pro the footage is basically UNWATCHABLE, it's to shaky and lots of vibrations. If you watch my newer videos you will see a newer go-pro with much better stabilization and clarity while running. You're to wrong, but the visual effect is a top priority for me, you know. Thanks my dude!
Nice video 👍 if you get a chance look up a video on single stage and 2 stage idle your running a 2 stage if you ever watch my savage videos you will hear it drop right back to idle no humming should help for best performance and would run all,day with no issues I definitely need to order some bones brew 👊

@@hybrid32494 Yes sir thank for the advice and look forward to more videos!
@@TestECull just curious, concerning the 3.3, what makes it so crappey?
I'm still looking for that high speed gear upgrade.
Bones brew baby..you already know what the Woogie Nitro runs..love the vids man keep em comming
Nitro Gang rooting for a rematch speed test! Come on 50 mph!
Come on, 17 tooth clutch bell
Awesome dude👍 That savage runs great.
Idk....would getting replacing the current glow plug with a hotter one, make it faster or something? Idk just popped in my head
You should try an exhaust pipe for top end. Ofna 086 works well
I've always loved the savage wheels and pin tires. Let er rip.
hey bro! how you doing! Glad you got to see this savage in action, btw there are many other very good videos on this truck, I think you'll appreciate. NitroGang!! and yes, these tires hav not let me down, they r super great traction, low ballooning, and good high speed stability.
I used to run 20% torco fuel then decided to try 25% Byron and was expecting some improvement in performance but i didn't see any a difference
Very cool man . Just needs a bigger fuel tank for longer runs 👍
Hey Man, i have this truck and a 4.6 that i let sit for a year or 2, do you own a shop or service nitro's? Your videos are awesome and makes me want to get back into it.
That's good stuff man
Awesome video man
I own 2 Savage XL 5.9 a RS4 and a Trophy with a 4.0 engine, my problem with these old cars that the rubbers on the card needles deteriorate, do you have a solution for that? very difficult to find replacements, something to do a video on??
@@hybrid32494 actually in one of my savage xl the rubber seal on the low speed needle was so dried out that the needle spontaneously came out during a test drive was lucky not to loose it!
glad you got your fuel finally ! keep it real with pizza and egg rolls !
we are going for 50 MPH soon my dude. I am sourcing the high speed 3rd gear set and a clutch bell. Maybe I'll run both, I don't care, we gonna get the most out of this no matter what.
12:51 "this is extremely high oil content"
Traxxas top fuel: hold my tmaxx I'll be right back
hahaha, yes!!

I need recommendation for a replacement carb for a 30yr old OS .21 SE-B, please?
hey buddy! I cannot tell you for sure 100% but I would say that any OS 21 size carb will fit. It's usually all the same style of carb mounting. I've never owned a big block OS engine, but usually the blocks are the same anyway.
Not sure if you seen it but bones brew offers a filler neck that threads on there fuel bottles. Think it's like 6 bucks and comes with a cap.
hey buddy! I have since realized that my own fuel bottle's filler neck threads onto their quart containers. So It seems their quarts could also readily accept any fuel filler, even if you don't purchase one form them. I just realized this and will put it in my newest videos. Nitrogang!!
@@hybrid32494 nice! Good info to know thanks.
How do feel about Master Basher nitro fuel? I had a savage x and ran it ... loved it but a little pricey
Awesome!! I love you’re videos! 🤘
Maybe the GoPro holds it back what you think?
I would say yes for sure. Its legit a heavy square object at the highest possible location and terrible for speed passes. But the savage still killed it.
Yes it did!
Did you blow out any glow plugs when you ran out of fuel? Screwed up and did that to my ten-t yesterday.
hey bro, nope!
LOL, hahaha, YUP, it's a question that always blows people away and they judge you based on how expensive our RCs are. You spent what??? ahahah.
Please help
@@raymondwoods999 I have Revo and same it's fast and tuned but won't wheelie done it once.
Is it safe to rev it while holding in one place or is it better done in the air?
Think you might be able too run a hotter glowplug & a bit richer for a bit more top speed.
Though never had a nitro here myself heh.
hey my dude! thanks for watching, Nitrogang!!
Very Nice! It's possible install reverse on those savage 5.9?
would be interesting to find out
hey man! Yes, you could get a reverse module for these. They sell for like 50 bucks ebay, it's a pretty cool item, includes a reverse mixer and a third servo, along with the module itself.
@@hybrid32494 where I can find what is the manufacturer? Thanks
@@hybrid32494 I Will check on Ebay
Awesome video buddy 💯🔥✌🏻👌🏻👍🏻👏🏻🏎💨
Any nitro tuning tips for the PNW, the climate here makes nitros very finicky.
hey dude! Generally with warmer weather you just gotta tune to make sure the engine does not run hot, this means richening it. Overall only the temps matter.
Excellent video as always ! BTW don't forget the fast food ! lol
Got some 30% bones coming for my revo. Any recommendation on plug?
When I slow down the car revs up on a t maxx 3.3 what Does this mean
Here I only have 20 and 25 % ! So what’s your recommendation
I turned my brake bais way down in my tmaxx I'm at 30% my truck was doing cartwheels
I think u need to get the third gear updated for get there 50mph. Do not givet up men :)
Do you need to rebuild that engine?
hey man, thanks for watching. Based on my opinion this engine does not need a rebuild, it runs pretty well. IT's got good compression and therefore it's ok. As long as the compression is ok you can run these for a long time.
Great video! I just knew you would hit 51 dang it! Legitimate question...why is the traxxas fuel bad? Just asking because I want to learn.
@@hybrid32494 ah that makes sense! I never knew why but now I understand. Wouldn't that be hard on glow plugs too?
what do you use to moniter your speed when u use the gopro\
Just watched your video 5.9 sounds great just thinking if you changed your nitro engine weather the mgt 8.0cc what to give you the extra power and and speed or if OS do a nitro engine that big and has more power just a thought bro have a great day 🍺😎🇬🇧💪
Your fuel bottle lid fits on the quart of oil. It screws right on
Quart of fuel
hey man! That is a great point, I will make sure to point this out to people in a future video, thank you. I actually figured that out myself after making this video, it's very useful and easy. thanks for watching!
Wish I could get 30% here In The Uk they only sell 30% for aircraft vehicles
hey bro, you can still use aircraft fuel for nitro cars, but it's not common, the plane fuel generally is very high oil content bc of the sustained high RPM engine operation, you know. But to be honest with ya, I noticed no difference from 25-30 % nitro. I'm going to be testing other RCs to get a better feel for it.
Okay mate thanks for that byrons bro try byrons
Hey bro you should get a way to test your nitro fuel, seems like you got some over rated fuel 👍 your Savage running awesome though. I've had the same thing happen I've ordered some super cool sounding fuel and it turned out about the same as the normal fuel i was using. I'm really hoping to see your mgt soon 👍👍👊💪
Did you see the link in your last video I made about the losi nitro rc
Im looking at it now. I'll leave you a comment on your video ok. That will be easier for you to check.
Have you tried Traxxas fuel before?
hey man! Yes, I have, their fuel is fine if you know how to properly tune a motor. It tends to have more oil in it than normal to make sure beginners in the Nitro hobby have a little more margin of error you know. For racing application you do not want Traxxas fuel on the other hand.
Nitro gang for life! 🤘
Oh yes
Love that savage!! I guess it's the 3 speed.
Love/hate tuning nitro engines, especially cars, often the adjustment needed is fine, In Scotland we say turn it a baw hair (ball hair) clockwise or anti, or it's just a Baw hair off, lol
Cool! You Have The Link For The Fuel?
What is the best fuel to keep you engine cool.
theres no special fuel, you should let the engine run richer, so let more full in de carb, bei turning de highspeed needle a half or an fourth of an turn OUT
I want that camera, what kind is it?
Nice Bro !!!!
hey man! thanks! I have a couple more great vids on this savage, I ran it against some electric at my local RC track, pretty much destroyed many of them with the 3-speed!

hahaha LOL. This was another older guy. It seems they are the true NitroGang fans, lol. In each video some older random guy chats me up, ahah, right!!
No temp gauge man??
What’s wrong with traxxas fuel?
Bad quality ingredients and WAY to high of an oil content for for cars. It would probably do ok for planes and helicopters.
Interesting video I am about to buy one Just doing my homework
Breaks are good lol bout to break dif.richen up the breaks LMBO.and put clips on back looks funny
Can you get a arena Mojave
What's wrong with top fuel?
hey buddy, thanks for watching.

You need to use a little run cam. Not that it heavy GoPro. You’d definitely hit 50mph if you used a run cam
hey bro! The thing is, with any other camera other than a go-pro the footage is basically UNWATCHABLE, it's to shaky and lots of vibrations.
