We had a ton of questions about how we mixed the Toska record. So I invited our producer over to have a chat and answer all your questions!

Hey guys, I’m Rabea. I'm the lead guitarist in Toska, Frog Leap & Dorje where I write music, make songs and have a great time with my mates. I also have my own line of guitars with Chapman Guitars, and I’ve designed numerous products with some really cool companies, such as the Victory Amps VX Kraken. Anyway, i hope you enjoy my videos, thank you for watching!

Thanks again for having me round, dude! Rambled a fair bit but hopefully answered some questions too. Looking forward to revisiting a mix soon, hopefully that will provide some nice insight! Cheers all! X
Hey Bea and Mark! Since I first saw Mark years ago in some Middle Farm recording footage, I've been hoping to see you all interact on camera and to learn from it. I just did just that--thanks very much. Enjoying Mark's new station too! Hoping to maybe learn how one goes about mixing cow intestines (Edgar Allan would like this), but Genghis would be cool too. I love the sections in 6 switching to 11/8 (or however you think of that)!
And if there are any wannabe UA-camrs out there wondering how to introduce a guest, look no further than that. Way classy video man, loved it.
If you do a Mix breakdown I would love to see Abomasum!
Q1, the technical term for that act is 'Crop Dusting'"
I did not know this band existed until 10 seconds ago....im enjoying this. I will return after I have heard the entire record....
Man, just discovered Toska not too long ago and I'm happy to see videos like this, as a guitarist learning to write, produce and mix.
I'm interested in hearing about making it in the industry, too. I will definitely follow both of you dudes. Tons of respect for your work!
Thanks for answering my question!! Absolutely in love with this album, both musically and sonically
First time I have ever received a notification for a video (I even have the bell activated)
Awesome video man. I was stoked for this. For the mix walkthrough, I think it would be cool to see Abomasum!
been hyped for something like this for ages!! spot on job lads!! hoping to pick up some tips for a last minute saviour for a uni project
Abomasum, for sure. The tones and ambiences on their own and the relation between sound super good, would love to see the behind the scenes
Hey Rebea, I like what you did in this Video, it was very knowledgeable.
One question though
How can I get started with recording and producing without out knowing anything but playing the instruments without droping to much money on education for mixing and mastering.
I love the latest Toska EP, keep it up man.
Hey Bea, So if Toska was to do a tour with any band, Past, Present or Future, who would it be, My guess is either Karnivool or Black Peaks (Cheers from Wisconsin)
Dude i dont know who to get ahold of, but Toska has a great dark and instrumental style. That matches very well w the bands that Tool bring out on tour. I think u guys would have a great shot at that.
How do you handle flatulence in the studio? I would have assumed an SM57 in the center for mids, and maybe an MD421 at mid cheek for bass through a vintage Neve compressor. But that's me.
Plz make the walkthrough about When Ghengis Wakes. i NEED to know how to get those drop tuned ambient parts sounding so crisp
Prayermonger would be so interesting to see! But I'd be excited to see any song off of FBTS!
Fire By The Silos is my favorite album of all time. Hands down. Wouldn't change a thing. With that said, I would love to go to an alternate universe and hear what the record would've sounded like if it was just Bea Dave and Ben with no producer. Definitely wouldn't have sounded nearly as good, but hearing the songs in those older Ode to The Author tones would be surreal and fascinating. Like if Nirvana recorded Nevermind the same way they recorded Bleach.
Hey Rabea, can you talk about some of the sound effects used and how they were created? Also, how did you decide where to put them in the songs?
Genghis!!!!!!!
Great t-shirt Mark.
@18:12 KSR Orthos MKI mate. I have a Gemini if you ever want to track with that 🙂
You should break down prayermonger
Could you guys do a 'Nail-The-Mix' style breakdown of some of the songs on FBTS?? Abomasum, Congress, and Gengis for starters ;)
definitely congress would be great to dissect !!
Please do a video on Abomasum!
Looks like I'm not leaving my PC for another 42 minutes.
Cheers, Rabea. Welcome, Mark! \w/
pleeeeeeease do a mix breakdown
Abomasum or A Tall Order would be the ones! Abomasum specifically for the baritone and the cleans :)
Abomasum is the best, be interested to see how that was mixed!
Break down “When Ghengis Wakes” please guys, that song slaps hard!!
I have a question: how many takes does it typically take to get right performance out of the drummer, or do you take three or four decent takes and do some light splicing to create the perfect drum track, such as a near perfect take having it's china replaced with a beefy-er sounding hit from a different take?
For me, I track until I hear something I don't like (which is a very gut feeling. Often I find glitches or mistakes can sound cool, or add character to the track). Then I'll stop the recording, and have the drummer pick up from there. Repeat until track is done. I may do the whole process twice, if I'm not sure about the "vibe" of the first track.
When Genghis Wakes, A Tall Order, and Abomasum would be cool to see dissected
Subbed to him, thanks.
12:11 To and.... Fro? Pun not intended I guess lol
You guys look like duo from BAM channel. That animators are so simmilar looking. check it man.
Second. 😁
Dave.
I dont want to see a video about flatulence in the studio. I want to smell a video about flatulence in the studio.
I wonder what it would smell like
Oh my god....2:11...I always ease into a Fart....especially when I've got a bad stomach.....it maybe ok to fart in the studio in certain situations....but to shit your Pants that's a no no.....
Abomasum or Congress?
giving it a bit more GURF huh?
plz check my band GURF out hahahahaa bye
I hope it's not super compressed to make it louder than it should. Recordings in the past decade (or more) are all compressed to shit losing all dynamics and nuances (unless it's mixed for vinyl). Just listen to RCHP's Stadium Arcadium or Metallica's Death Magnetic. Compressed and brick-walled to oblivion...you can get ear-fatigued listening to the first 2 songs in each album.
First
Flatulence indeed. What a vile subject Robbie. I'm surprised at you. Yukky. ..
