- XCOM: Chimera Squad reviewed on PC by Tom Marks.
Chimera Squad is a standalone spin-off of the XCOM series taking place 5 years after XCOM 2, making it a direct follow-up but not a full-on sequel.

This review seems to purposefully avoid mentioning the game is only 10$, not a full priced 60$ release.
Yeah i mean all that he mentioned is true but the game is 20 $ max and for that price it is a great game i think.
Meanwhile Gears Tactics is 70€
@@nassi9093 gears tactics is twenty hours longer
@@janlovercic9002 Dude 20 bucks is a lot of money for this quarantine situation. I mean Epicgames Uplay are giving free games every week, not to mention discounted constantly. Even greedy steam giving free weekends. This is not Xcom3 just a spinoff.

Sounds to me like they know it's unpolished, hence the low price. They're gonna watch reviews like these and likely put the parts we like into XCOM 3.
Jesse this! They know for Xcom 3 they need to make changes to distinguish itself from 1&2, especially considering 2 was so amazing. So why not release a $20 beta that include some of the big changes. I assume because of having plot characters, there’ll be more plot focus in 3. Also interesting that they are letting us play with aliens in the main campaign which was an idea the community had been wanting. Interested to see how this all plays out. Been a big fan of the series and love the work done
It's gonna fail because it's only releasing on PC
@@skyneko136 I think they're well aware that this game is going to fail. They would've priced it at $50 if they thought it would be a success.
@@spartan2051 I see it as a $10 DLC/expansion pack for XCOM 2. The amount of bugs seems equal to me. I had a moment during an Ironman run where Advent just walked through a building's walls (while undiscovered) and just killed everyone.
@@skyneko136 I think it may get a digital release for consoles.
How did they not mention that it is only $10 on Steam right now?
But they give it 7 instead
Someone might check this video in a year or two after some updates.
Sales a varied from time to time.
@@delvin0965 Ok, well then at least say it is only 20$ with out it being on sale?
@@illmeaty critics often don't mention the price, and price can actually very a little bit based on region from what I understand.
It's going to be $20 after this sale ends in just over a week.
ok i DID NOT expect snek girl to sound so... normal? sounds like some highschool cheerleader
Danzan Sandeev a lot of actual “aliens” can speak perfect English. The secret is that they are us. Conciousness is a singularity.... so we’ve all secretly been the same person this whole time spread between billions of bodies. Every tree, bug and even the planets themselves... are literally all you. I am you and you are me. Welcome to the great awakening👽😅☝️👌
@@addamriley5452 While I would love some of Addam's acid, yeah, she snek girl shouldn't sound like that.
She sounds like Cassie Cage in Mortal Kombat 11
I was also hoping she would have an accent like “sssssoo whatss the ssssituation commander?”
Ucup Sukatmo probably same voice actor. Btw I’m not on acid. This is the information “the elites” don’t want us to know. The final shocking secret of the universe. Nothing bursts a bubble quite like quantum physics. Remember too love yourself guys. It’s waaaay more important to the world than you think but don’t let your ego get in the way of truth.
The review seams to confirm the way I have seen it. But they really should mention it's only $10. Everything except the bugs are justified by the fact that it's a low budget game and the Devs have said themselves that it is to test new ideas.
I agreed that it would have been nice to know, but I don't think it was a malicious intentional Act of them not mentioning the price, IGN usually doesn't mention the price to begin with.
Some people who watch IGN videos don't use USD as their currency.
Also, even if it was free the score would have still been 7.
@@matthewhager270 I half agree. Even setting aside the USD issue they could have said, "This game IS a budget title" since the way they framed it was, "Compared to XCOM 2 its pretty light." That implies the games are being solid as comparable products of comparable value which is sort of not really fair for something that, at release, is only 1/6th the price of a full price retail game.
I don't think the 7/10 would change, that feels like a fair review for a fun, but flawed game with some serious bugs, but for someone who's only information for this game comes from watching a review, it sort of frames the game in a very different way then it should be considered as a perches.
None of this is justified. Go out and buy a couple of red bulls or something over this crap.
@@MOWAuthor well a lot of people seem to like this crap, and considering it's a sixth the price of a full title have you ever considered that your expectations are a bit High for a $10 game?
Firaxis probably just decided to ship this game asap to refocus all their resources on the upcoming XCOM3 which will likely be revealed soon. Yeah the game has bugs and some features lack depth, but it's 10 bucks so honestly it's not that bad.
or rather they are experimenting as a preparation for XCOM 3, they want to see your feedback, see what works and what doesn't. Smart move, they have lots of content creators and UA-cam comments to fish feedback from.
@@Quadrolithium This is the general theory I've seen. Chimera Squad is just a testing ground for any changes they wanted to input and see how it plays out with the audience. I hope that that is in fact the case.
how is this game compared to War of Chosen DLC? I only have played Xcom2 and want to either pick up WoC or Chimera Squad
Doesn't bode well for x3, ajust look at how poor x2 launched and it still runs poorly to this day
Master Try It’s really a choice between, an expansion that changes much of the base game or a new game entirely. Personally, I would have gone for XCOM Chimera Squad when it was still on sale. But I would go for XCOM WOTC.
It only costs 10$....I think the reviewer should have mentioned that!
That's a sale price that ends May 1st.
@@Lead_Foot True, but even after that date it will still not be a full price game!
@@SolaireGamingPT Can you name another review of a non full priced game on IGN where they include the price in the video?
Alan Garcia that’s IGN’s omission surely.
Comments basically said, “ YOU FORGOT TO MENTION ITS ONLY 10 to 20 DOLLARS.”
and i agree
Seems a bit unfair to not mention it's only £10 on steam. Not sure it was ever meant to be a full £50 xcom game
Ah. No wonder i thought it looked like a mobile game
It’s 10 bucks but only for a limited time. You have until May 3rd before the game goes back to its original price of 20 dollars
It's 7.99 with humble bundle
I think this game is a bit better than the review makes it seem. I love it! There are some minor bugs on launch day but not nearly as bad as other games and it's playable even if they don't patch it. Runs smoothly and looks DOPE!! at 60Hz, 4k Maximum settings, by the way, for $10 it's a STEAL and leaves little room for complains
It has a little something for everyone
but its not for everyone
I think the review needs to match expectations to the price . its only 10 bucks on steam and even after the discount ends its still only 20 bucks. Unfair to compare it to previous xcoms which cost like 3x the price
So if this is testing new mechanics for a potential XCOM 3 what from Chimera Squad would likely make it in? For me the most likely mechanic would probably be the breach. The turn timeline seems out of place for XCOM
Turn base + breach + mix of aliens and humans fighting a common threat. It's really easy to predict. And turn base is not really out of place, just a change of style. Lack of permadeath, now that's a major factor that should not be removed from xcom.
I think it’s worth mentioning that the game is 9.99. I feel like for the price point it’s an outstanding game. I personally haven’t experienced any of the bugs mentioned in the review in my 11 hours so far, except the visual stuff that was also common in the previous XCOM games.
Yeah. Losing perma death is a mistake, that always adds something special to a game, and makes your characters actually matter to you.
0:22 THE EYES
I’m looking forward to trying it out. Just finished my first full playthrough of XCOM 2 vanilla and War of the Chosen. I’m really interested in the breach modes and character abilities mostly for Chimera Squad.
I just played the first couple of missions... "Breach" is nothing more than the "concealed" concept all over again, a even more aggressive (and less tactical) way to jumpstart the game and take enemies by surprise. As character abilities goes Xcom 2 had special armor and psi agents that mimicked aliens already. So, at first glance it seems this game is trying to flip the formula, but the major elements were always there.
2:07 Nobody laughed at that, let alone out loud.
Maybe a chuckle
It was an amusing conversation. A shame the rest was cut out from the video.
Just a chuckle imo
This game is $10 if you buy before May 1. Review really should have mentioned that.
Its IGN...the reviews are usually poor
To be honest i really like the breach mechanic, since i i believe the phase in witch you approach the enemy is the most boring one (might just be me). I understand that it is nice to be able to make a strategy while you approach, but personally i do not like that. For Xcom3 maybe you could mix it, the breach mechanic for when attacking buildings and the classical one for outdoor missions.
Hold on... a Viper that can talk?!
Evidently, that was more common than was thought. Which makes sense; one wasn't given many opportunities for conversation with aliens in XCOM2.
The Vipers are the original Thin Men, of course they talk, they posed as humans
the aliens are spliced with human DNA to help them adapt to life on earth. so that may explain the sudden ability to talk
thought only my ex had that ability
Inclusivity mate, even aliens abides to the current trend
IGN should support their staff and fuel community engagement by highlighting the reviewer and reader in the description! Also put out more Swaim content!
For 10 bucks though im all for this. I see this as a testing ground for xcom3 and frankly im ok with that. Plus im sure this will be a big step for an franchise that just wanted to see what does and doesn't work
Every comment: "ITS ONLY TEN DOLLARS WHY DIDNT YOU SCREAM ITS ONLY TEN DOLLARS?!?!"
Im pretty sure in the options you can carry over damage from mission to mission?
Only encounters on the same mission.
Interesting and varied playing characters. A departure from customized characters from previous game. I particularly like Zephyr. I will love see something like Templars in future content expansion if there any. Templar characters were my favourite in XCOM 2
I hope we can get more alien team members in XCOM3. Having a cool Viper on the team will be awesome
Dude its price is a big thing
Adding to the chorus of - this isn't, nor was it intended to be a full sized spin off. It's regular price is 1/3 of XCOM 2 at launch. And it is currently available for 1/2 that.
In addition, in light of that criticisms of it feeling "thinner" seem laughable without that context.
Finally, I suppose it is possible that XCOM 3 will ditch the meat grinder of nameless rookies, but that seems unlikely. It's helpful to Firaxis I'd imagine, to let them know what shouldn't dovetail back into the main series, but recognizing that this isn't the main series when offering critiques would make them more contextually useful.
All that said, thanks for the review.
This seems extremely harsh on a $10 game
The price says nothing on games - or is any (over-) priced EA game the best? Also: it's a 20$ game without the discount
@@TotallyNotAFox i got it for 7.99
@@Zack-xu2zw I got it for 5€ - had some left over Steam budget.
@@TotallyNotAFox So you think if steamworld dig (which is great btw) was priced at $60 that it would be well received? What a ridiculous thing to say.
Peter Jones people seem all too willing to go in to bat for IGN when they mess up... it’s weird.
One thing for sure. The game is quite optimised (separate from gameplay bugs). My laptop couldn't run XCOM 2 at all but it can run this game no problem. No lagging or fps drops. Truly amazing. Also, I really like the way they try something different so they know what will be well received by fans or not.
Im personally missing someone from exalt... imangine the exalt-spy who gave away the convois position where anette could be found after the destruction of the exalt-hq was an operater in the chimera squad and to what awesome dialouges that would have led
I find it very troubling that you never mention the price point for this title was only $10. That's a huge value for what you get.
I properly burst out laughing when the reviewer started talking.
The creativity with each soldiers strategy in the last game and how you would approach any encounter in any different formation instead of just breaching once, shoot all the guys there, do the objective, repeat.
The lack of perma-death is a borderline deal breaker. I was plenty attached to the less refined soldiers of the past.
Reviews all the time mention about a game not being AAA but being sold at a AAA price, so you have to review it as such. Yet never mention it at all when a game comes out much cheaper, like this one (which makes sense as they’re obviously just trying some new mechanics)
He didn't mention the arrest option or the city management stuff
I hope that, if they ever make an XCOM 3? It's about taking the fight to the Aliens. Like full on ship battles, drop podding onto Alien worlds, and occupy part of the galaxy. I think that'd be super cool
Wait a second, aren't we just playing as ADVENT now?
Just going to say it dont like the redesign of the "advent soldier" or the muton
Only a heretic would say that.
It's pronounced Heretek you fool
@MC Layer the voice acting for the enemies soldiers and our aliens is soooo bad lmao. Especially the enemy human soldiers.
@MC Layer the advent soldiers had massive eyes we have an two ex advent and neither look like what they did in xcom pratel mox for example and the shape of the body as well as head are off and even if the face didnt change I want the mask back on stat
the aliens are spliced with human DNA to help them adapt to life on earth. that may be why they look different
Woah, I didn't even know about this game! What are the chances that I just finished XCOM: Enemy Unknown last night?
I just hope xcom 3 wont be this light hearted and hippy-ish. Currently replaying Xcom 1 enemy within and in terms of the overall setting and atmosphere its by far the best in my opinion. Gameplay, skills etc are much more polished in xcom 2, but that first contact with aliens feeling in xcom 1 and the overall serious atmosphere of trying to defend against the initial invasion is great.
Honestly a new atmosphere is welcomed as XCOM is usually too serious. Making it light hearted and “hippy-ish” makes for a refreshing experience.
I should point out the bugs seem to have been parched post review code coming out, also for me a downed agent always caused a scar to there is that.
Oh no... The Snek waifu is real.
I don't get all the "it's only 10$" comments. I LOVE xcom 2, coming up on 700 hours. But Chimera squad doesn't look that fun to me. Has nothing to do with the price. It's was probably rushed because of Gears Tactics.
Original price was like $60.00.
I love ign when's trying give review this game like it's a full game like xcom 3 and haven't mention is just 9.99 euros and they give 7... have more contents in comparation of resident evil 3, the price is 69.99 euros, they give 9...
I'm currently playing the game. For $10, it's a great value. I do like that they've implemented a lot of new ideas, which, as many are stating, are probably going to make their way into XCOM3.
The viper should not sound like that lol...
the aliens are spliced with human DNA to help them adapt to life on earth. that may be why
@@claytopolis they had hybrid aliens in xcom2 and they sounded different.
@@cashuflakbreakdancer well they probably just increased the amount of human already in them
@@claytopolis or lets just say the real reason. The devs got a little lazy on that aspect of the game aha. All the splicing happened at the advent Gene clinics. With advent gone i don't imagine they'd keep them running but who knows.
As are others mentioning, it is hell of a game for 10€... Any indie game of this quality and for this price would get more than 7/10. I am enjoying it, only thing spoiling it are bugs and slowish progress with equipting my team (and missing 2nd healer other than Terminal if you want to train her etc - at least from chars I have in team so far).
I personally feel the review is unjust as it doesnt take into account the price point for this game as it is currently 10 dollars.
Just because they don't mention the price in the video it doesn't mean they didn't take the price into account when reviewing and scoring the game.
Even if he mentioned it's 20$ regular price or 10$ right now, everything said in the review still stands. He didn't say anything untrue. 7/10 is still valid. It's still a fun more bite sized xcom game with less urgency, new hit or miss mechanics and a buggy mess. I'll buy it.
XCOM inspired Kingdom Battle which in turn provided inspiration for a XCOM spin-off. Full circle once again.
2:42 - Isn't that an option in the difficulty menu?

“I’m from New Arctic. I am, by definition, an earthling.”
Well... um... she’s not wrong...
The title was XCOM China Squad when I first read it.
Did you play a different version of xcom2? On ps4 it constantly crashes and on Xbox it has the aim problem that will always ruin it. 70-90% should usually hit
I bet the Reapers ain't happy about working with aliens
The last scene... Somebody nudging a freaking Sectopod into submission? Wow!
3:38 this alien ragdoll
Snek: I am from new artic, by definition I am a earthling" BA"HAHAH XD
It would be awesome if the characters' death can affect the story.
When will it release on PS4?
I'm very disappointed that line of sight bugs are still not fixed since xcomeu.
Ok, the snake chic breaching through the window looked *hella* weird
Consider this as a spin-off of the XCOM series, similar to Half-Life: Alyx. The changes are quite significant comparing to XCOM and XCOM 1, which I believe the devs named it as XCOM: Chimera Squad instead of XCOM 3 because of worrying the players may not like the changes and thus destroy the series.
It makes you ‘feel’ like commanding a Chimera Squad!
The games like 10 bucks, I feel like they're reviewing this as though it was a full price 60 dollar game, price is very important to keep in mind for a game like this.
i gotta be honest for a price like that it's exactly what it is: a testing ground. use of many new weapons and abilities (some of which came from mods like shields), that soldier by soldier turn order (which is great in my opinion, gotta play it though, wonder what decides the order), inserting some personality into the soldiers... they could have chuck it for 20-30, but it's 10$, even half of that with a discount
I don’t agree completely. I appreciate what they have done with this game. It’s not perfect but it’s not trying to be, well worth the price. I know it was to test gameplay but I do feel like the characters got cheated and would have loved to see them grow more.
Oh XCOM, how I love thee. Bought it, but I think I'll wait until they fix those bugs.
does it uses the same engine as Xcom 2?
Coming from someone who doesn't enjoy turn based all that much, I can say that its an okay game. I somewhat liked the previous xcoms since you get to customize characters and all.
I was a bit disheartened when I learned that you can't have your own characters. When the trailer came out, I got excited thinking that I could have an entire squad made out of nothing but sectoids. A pantsless sectoid gang screeching at everyone at everything in the effort to keep the peace.
Ah well. Its $10 which I suppose is fair for the US market. A bit on the mid-range cost over in my country, though. I would recommend this with great caution.
Great review
4:25 is that Louie from Ducktales?
We are not going to talk about the jiggling body at 3:40 guys ??
chimera squad is basically a firaxis staff get inspired after playing rainbow six
and rainbow six extraction is basically a ubisoft staff inspired after playing xcom
The utter contradiction between the score and the myriad issues pointed out by the review is hilarious. Dunkey was right.
Passing on this one. Seems so...unserious. Very casual tone. Love the intense clock-is-ticking feeling of Xcom 2.
What's that you say reviewer? It's only 10 dollars? Thanks, I will give it a try.
I don't know if making friends with aliens is the route XCOM should go.
You kinda have no choice
It makes no sense at all, but we can't forget how political correctness is trying to infuse their ideals on mainstream products. Nothing more natural than Xcom to include (pun not intended) aliens.
Initially I had bit of mixed feelings about this title, reading the comments before giving it a try, but for the small price at on launch discount I've certainly already had my money's worth.
I don't try to take this title too seriously, but instead as a kind of cartoony spin-off title on the franchise, neverminding the English speaking aliens, snarky humour or occasional glitches. Some of the new game mechanics I found somewhat enjoyable and I could be eager to see them in a future major release as well.
Hoping for a MacOs -version coming soon.
Karak REALLY liked this game. Didn't say anything about the major bugs this dude encountered. Interesting to see the two differences here.
As a new player should I get this or Xoom 2 complete?
this takes place after xcom 2 story wise. i havent played much. but you at the very least should read a summary of what happened in xcom 2
Get war of the chosen on a promotion, it's the complete package. You can also try Warrior Within on android or the switch, imo it's a perfect portable game. But anyway, don't start with chimera squad (neither the long war mod).
Not sure what's up with the odd misidentification of the snake character. There's nothing viperish about her; she's made to resemble a cobra (crossed with a Turian).
Just wished your could make custom characters that have cutscenes in the story
Same.
Well team system base on xcom 1 and 2 multiplayer gameplay.
I don't know about Xcom lore but, the humans dosen't fight with the aliens
Xcom Hipster Squad. I'm in the middle of a furious life and death firefight, one of my hipster agents gets pasted by a giant robot...he's bleeding out, holding his guts in with his own hands, desperately needing medical attention....and the other douchebag agents are cracking jokes telling him to stop sleeping on the job. Where did Firaxis find such talented writers to come up with this kind of high level story telling?
While it doesn't cost much, it shouldn't have these many bugs, the original X-com 2 is several years old now.
I totally agree.. .why the developers arent able to launch a bug free game having already launched more than one of the same franchise.. .like soooo similar and same silly-obvious bugs ?? Do they even have beta testers?? It piss me off
Remember it is only 10$ and when it goes off sale it will only be 20
I personally haven't seen any BUGS, besides the regular "facing the wrong way during shooting" that I expected to see from an XCOM game. Also, not having character development shouldn't be a negative...like...why did you expect an XCOM game to have a super-dense story? I'm honestly impressed with the story as it is. XCOM 1 and 2 were so watered down for narrative that this is legit a breath of fresh air. I also didn't find the lack of permadeath as a negative. I already save-scummed a lot, and after like 12+ hours playing these last 2 days...I'm finding a lot more positive than negative.
Can’t wait to miss all the shots.. again
This engine would be a great way to do a new freedom force.
At least it won’t confuse people of weather it’s a sequel or a spinoff
For the price it´s a very solid piece of work.
If aliens ever came to earth it´s unthinkable to imagine that many wouldn´t join their ranks, we have always been divided in religious, philosophical and political beliefs. Besides, apart from global annihilation it´s hard to imagine any horrors aliens can achieve which we already havn´t done ourselves. The Nazis, Rwanda, Praga, Yangzhou and with an almost sci-fi touch the Japanese experiments on Chinese early last century .... the list is practically endless.
I kinda like the concept of moving on past a war and trying things from a new perspective.
This game reminds me of Mass Effect for some reason.
Maybe its mordin mind controling people.
Cody Archer probably so 😂👌🏽
A game where humans co-exist with aliens, and we work in a multi-species force, sounds pretty Mass Effect to me
Joao Gabriel glad I wasn’t trippin 😂 I still ain’t played this yet! Bought it though! 😂👌🏽
@@ShutterSpeedGaming Well they have put out only 1 patch and the game is glitchy to the point of having to load back half an hour or more. due to freezes and crashes.

What happened to the ADVENT troops?
Mankind accepted them with open arms because, remember, we are all political correct and inclusive
@@RRRRRRRRR33 When some of the hybrid broke free and formed the Skirmishers, XCOM worked with them. Why, when everyone was broken free of the mind control, would XCOM not work with them?
Do we think this game is going to get a console release?
Probably, unless they only want to sell 45 copies.
