    I like your setup thanks for the information I have one of them scientific Logics myself don't type I live in Michigan and we have one storm and I had to push it the snow off of the roof so next summer I'm going to go and do the same thing that you did thank you very much for your input I live in Alpena Michigan.

    Thanks for video My Shelter Logic collapsed a several weeks ago 3rd winter. Near Haliburton ON. It was in remote location with alternating snow/freeze thaw weather. No one to clean the shelter off. The snow shed off itself in prior years.

    I wondered if the 2x4 idea would work. Nice to see someone else was thinking about that, great job!

    I used 1x4x8 and screwed them right in the frame,still holding 5 yrs, never have to shovel snow off it

      maybe l'll change to 1x4x10 instead of 1x3x8. spacing of supports are 5' apart

    We have a shelter logic up here in interior Alaska. We knock the snow off after each snow fall as our neighbors shelter logic collapsed under a heavy snow load. Winter of 2020-21 had a total snowfall of 91.3 inches...a couple of buildings in town had roofs collapse under that much snow load.

      Hello Missy Skeeter nice to hear from you. The snow in my area of Ontario which is 30 miles north of Lake Ontario has changed over the years. I use to get powder snow and one year I had 48 inch cuts in the drive with the snow blower. I now get more wet snow but that kind can be very heavy and dense. From Uxbridge Ontario Craig Clayton

    What are your thoughts on reinforcing with pvc pipes? (Maybe glued together?) The bracing could all be attached together in any direction using 4 and 2 way connectors. Uprights could be placed between the existing ones and the cross bracing could be put on existing ‘rafters’ as well as additional ones put in between. The ends could even be attached to some type of flat metal base that has a metal tube that would fit inside the pvc. They could also be cemented into deck blocks, sonotubes, or metal pails. For stress points on original structures, maybe slicing pool noodles and covering the entire tube (so it was even on the pole and wouldn’t create new stress points!) You could also use the foam insulating tubes they make for pipe insulation. 🤷‍♀️ Just some of my crazy thoughts!! 😂
    That said…I didn’t do these things in my current shelter…these are ideas for my NEXT shelter- but I’ve had my Shelter logic shed for 15 YEARS! Same tarp- no collapsing! AND I live in the snow belt in Ontario between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay!!! I don’t think I’ve ever cleared snow off it! Mind you, I do have it set back a bit and it gets some protection from cedar trees. I’d like to hear thoughts on the pvc (or other hard plastic tubes that I might not know the name of!!!😋) I like the fact that pretty much anyone can cut pvc pipes and glue connectors on- K.I.S.S rule- which applies to me!!! 😂Patti

    Possible upgrade idea?...I think adding a strip of 1/2' or 3/4' plywood screwed to each 2x4 support panel that bridges the pole would lock the panels together and also add rigidity to the pole. And sanding or chamfering all the right angles at each 2x4 end might help with wear points on the shelter cover. Sooo many ideas! Thanks for sharing :-)

      Hello Scott Great idea to strengthen the roof, for the snow load , but I take the structure down come spring as it is sitting in the middle of my drive/ parking area at this very moment. Craig

    Holy cow! Great minds think alike! I was just thinking of doing this same thing!!! Only thing different, I'm going to use heavy wire ties instead of cord to lock everything in place maybe. Also, 2 x 4 might be over kill? Maybe, furring strips, but more of them. 2x4's are $8 USD each!

    • @craigclayton4514
      @craigclayton4514  3 роки тому +1

      Steve I think that you should be careful with wire ties as they could rub on the cover and make a hole. I used the paracord it is strong and soft and I made every length the same so it is a no brainer when putting them up. Craig Clayton

      @@craigclayton4514 That's a good thought. The more I think about it, I'm just not going to bother wasting time and money. THey aren't meant for snow and only good for temp. setups. We are all pushing them when we think they can be a long term solution. Think everyone wants to turn these cheap things into year round storage. Just not sure it is worth the efforts. The best I've seen was the addition of sheet metal roof panels. And then, you have to wonder just how much of a snow load will that hold? I suspect not much...

    l'll be coping your great idea . l'll be using 1"x3"x10' spruce strapping to the roof.Last winter l had a pile of snow and then it rained briefly and then it froze..NUTZ..! it leaked after warming up in spring. l tried to removed but the frozen snow was too heavy. l added a heavy duty tarp recently and will get into the strapping and hope for the best..a friend of mine had the his tarp collapse with weight of frozen snow and then blew away.

    Maybe a vent system can be installed, one that you can put in and out of the muffler in event or starting your car remotely? To avoid C02 poisoning

    The dimensions of these structures is such that dimensional lumber does not efficiently fit or span.
    I recently used orange snow fence under the cover to support it under load. Needs to be constantly tightened with zip ties until it settles in. The big stress point is the sharp tubing angle where the roof meets the side and this needs to be supported.

    Come-on, give yourself credit for the snow load design and it's working perfectly. The time will come when you can remove the snow. But I always think ahead of a worst case scenario that would force me to work removing the snow. That motivates me to do it when I think I should, not when I'm forced to by impending collapse. 👍🏻🇺🇲

    Great way to hold the 2x4s in ,why do you remove them when it's warmer could they not stay permanently. Great idea for our snowy winters here in Canada .Enjoyed the video Thanks. PS what brand of tent shelters are the ones you said can take the snow load ,the 2 closers to the house and are they alot more expensive. Thanks again Dale

    How's the SUV shelters holding up? I'm looking for something a little bit more maintenance-free as I would be using it in the back of my welding shop as a paint booth. I would be making modifications by adding a back wall out of plywood and a front wall with a door so I would only be using the structure with the tarp.

    • @craigclayton4514
      @craigclayton4514  3 роки тому +2

      Hello R.C Did you look at the SUV shelter video because you replied on the round shelter video. If you look at the other shelter video's I have made the newest is about the SUV. I used the Princess auto hay tarp cover 48 x 24. As it is in the first winter of snow I do tap the roof from the inside. I think that if I use my wood frame design from this video on the SUV I would be able to walk on the roof. With the wood frame for snow is not a problem, the SUV were put up with the hay tarp as the Shelter logic covers fail on the new tarps the older tarps were better made. I am in Ontario north of Toronto but not in the snow belts. Craig Clayton

      @@craigclayton4514 I'm in Hamilton ont. We get bad snow storms as well. I noticed that you mentioned that the SUV shelter was better at maintaining less snow on its peak. I don't want a shelter that I would have to remove the snow off the top as I'm not always at my shop. I will definitely checkout your other video and sub to your channel.

      Hello Janah
      This is a budget project that has been put up and down for maybe 8 years on the original cover and I hope to get more years of service. If the cover was used as per manufacture it would have failed probably by now. The laws of physics state that too much snow load will bring the roof down.

    I'm bracing my top of carport for my winter but still,no way my carport would survive if i didn't remove all side tarps because winter wind.now wind can blow through sideways.but your carport top might be better curved for wind

      Hi doc I just finished putting up the tan and brown shelter today. I started last weekend and single handed assembled both from the ground up, I am planning to strengthen the front of the brown using 4 sections of tubing left over from a round trampoline, it should make it very strong. In my mind I have a picture of it looking like building with whale ribs.

By the looks of it and with some modifications. I am learning that the 12x20 will be perfect for working in cars inside
