Are Snap-On tools great quality? Yes, absolutely, and I buy used ones all the time. Are they worth getting into serious debt for? Absolutely not. I love Snap-On tools, but I don't love the way they hook people into making payments forever. Their business model isn't based on selling tools, it's based on selling credit to buy their tools. Don't fall for it! Buy what you can afford, upgrade when you need to or want to, stay free of debt, and don't sign your life away.

Great advice to round out this video. My son is getting an associates degree in diesel technology right now. As I've been purchasing tools for him, he turned me on to Tekton, and they have really impressed me. I've tried warning my son that, Snap On, Mack, Matco, Cornwell etc all have nice tools, but it's really easy to get way in debt, only to look back and realize you didn't NEED some of those tools. I couldn't agree more with the point you made about some truck tools seeming "gimmick-y" or over thought. Solid wrenches and sockets will get you a lot farther then you think.

Tekton makes tools at nearly the same quality at a fraction of the cost. Really high value. And your comment is spot on about about newcomers to the trade: go for value. Mechanics prefer the large brands for 3 reasons.
1, The tools come to you, you need something, your a snap-on man, you phone him up and he is on his way.
2, Payments, greatest thing on earth for a company. They set aside so much money per month, week, or whatever for tool costs. for a job that needs a $90 tool, you cant charge an extra $90 for the job, you can charge some but it has to be included into labor costs. Most of the time is a flat rate, so you can get the tool and add it to the payment, bumps payment up $5 and you put your new tool in your box and move on with life. By the next time you have to add another tool, the first is or is almost paid off.
3, Most tools can supply home-gamers with all the thrills of changing their own oil in their nissan. But for the guy who is going to do it 100 times a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year... Not so much. The reason Snap-on tools are sooooooo high is your buying a tool that assures you that this IS THE BEST for doing THIS job, and there is no denying it. That's why they are still sold, that's why there are still around. Any shop teacher, professional, or anyone who has a life time of experience with tools will tell you "Cry once" Yes you will spend a shit ton a cash, ONE TIME, not every 4 months when you have to buy that 3/8 ratchet yet again because that last bolt was actually welded and you have stripped the gears in your milfuky ratchet. Yes you can buy cheap tools but for the ones who use them EVERY DAY and EVERY WAY. Snap-On, Matco, Mac.. only tools to use.

The US military exclusively uses Snap-On tools so they're on the ultimate gravy train. A customer with bottomless pockets that'll pay whatever price you say. So if every private mechanic stopped using Snap-On tools tomorrow it wouldn't hurt the company's bottom line one whit. In fact it'd probably streamline their operations and make them even more money.

On one hand Snap-On tools are way too expensive. But on the other hand, they really do make great tools that last. Almost all of my tools are Snap-On, but I either bought them over two decades ago when they weren't as expensive as today, or I patiently got them off ebay or craigslist at a fraction of the list price, but without warranty. If I was a professional technician, I suspect I wouldn't be buying mostly Snap-On.

I love my Tekton socket set, I think they make great tools in general. I think professional brands like Snap on, Proto, Blackhawk, SK, Mac, Matco , Wright, have there place though. It's just crazy to buy all your tools of one of those brands you would spend way more than you need to. Personally one tool I think it's worth spending the bigger dollars on are combination wrenches. You take something like the Snap on flank drive, or Wright grip wrenches no cheaper brand wrench can even come close to comparing especially with the open end of the wrench. Bolt extractors are another tool it's worth buying the professional brand. Because if you are in a position where you need an extractor it's gotta work, at that point the last thing you need is it to slip or break.

I discovered Tekton tools years ago. In about 2015 Tekton offered a 135 piece mechanics tool set with carrying case, a selection of the most common sizes in SAE and Metric wrenches, 1/4”, 3/8” and 1/2” drive ratchets and sockets, together with a wide assortment of hex drive bits for Torx, Phillips, Allen, etc., plus the hex bit driver and one extension for each size socket drive, all for $62.99 delivered, from Amazon. That set, Tekton part number 1859, is no longer available, but what a bargain it was. I use it daily and would buy another one if they were still available. The good quality Harbor Freight impact sockets work well, as do their long handled metric wrenches for getting into tight spaces. As some of us find out the hard way, chrome sockets can be easily destroyed by impact drivers. I like used Snap-On Tools, but new ones are beyond my budget. Thanks for the video.

If the tool trucks don't do something different I could see them being phased out down the road. There's so many companies making good tools with even better warranties for a much lower price. The turn around time for getting tools warrantied or rebuilt can be pretty crazy if the truck doesn't have it. The days of that being a good warranty are gone. I've got several Tekton tools that have been used all day everyday for over a year now and not one of them has had an issue. I almost want something to break so I can try out their warranty but so far it hasn't been needed. I think the high price of the truck brands has replacement/rebuild factored in several times over so they never lose money on the tool.

Many are snap on tools stamped cat. As a cat technician it's also cool to have cat branded tools. The problem with horizontal into plastic nipple latches is that certainly the items in the lid...This way of holding items in there drives me nuts because when your hands are a bit oily or the conditions are cold like outdoors in winter, the items are difficult to de-latch from the plastic...& I call it a "disease" because just about every set out there seems to be like this now.

A few years ago, I bought my late father a set of 1/4" drive sockets and a ratchet from a well-known UK supplier of good quality tools (Machine Mart) and it was about £20. The same thing from Snap-On was over £200!

Puffy Elvis When breaker bars only break themselves, it’s time to try a different brand. :-) I also like SK, but the big head on their ratchets doesn’t always fit where I want it to.

There are some things for which there are no substitutes for Snap-On. When you're out in the field fixing an excavator and the cheaper socket you're using breaks, the high price of the Snap-on socket seems trivial. I've had many complete days ruined by lesser tools failing me. I own tools of many brands but some things I will not compromise.
I knew a heavy tow operator who put cheap tools in the trucks because so many things got lost. I always say when you're out on the road you need all the help you can get.
I will try the Tekton brand. So far I have not. The sound of that ratchet is not impressive.

The biggest snap-on rip-off is their boxes. I defy any of you to look under your box and see what the castors are mounted to. It's just folded sheet metal, no frame, and while it takes a decent amount of vertical pressure, any side load on those castors and they "snap-off". There is absolutely no way to correctly move a loaded box, and we have mechanics call all the time to have a flatbed take it to their new job. We always so "no", and we always get the "Whatcha mean man! I had a tow truck driver move it before and it was fine!". Well, we aren't sacrificing our insurance record to move boxes that have absolutely no tie down points, no legitimate place to hook, and castors that break off. Whatever idea you cooked up in your head with straps and chains and whatever has already been thought of, and no, it is not good enough. Call someone else.

I don't know about you but I never use my ratcheting wrenches to apply torque to anything.

Buy Snap on used. If you’re diligent you can find those ratchets for half price or less, particularly if you don’t mind an older model.

No way in hell I'd pay almost forty dallors for a dam screw driver. Snap on needs to start having a bunch of hot hookers driving their trucks and saleing there tools , then it might be worth it.

hey bryan,,,watched and liked your vid the other day...i ALMOST bought that same tekton socket kit...BUT...i want the type of socket that lowes carries,,because MM are marked with a red ring, and SAE had a blue ring around the socket (or, vice versa). and that is what i am looking for. and beings that dunmarh make lowes tools and snapon tools,, do you tihnk the quality is the same or even close to tekton?? or, should i not even mess with Kobalt,,,when you have that many sockets its good to look at them an know right off the bat if its MM or SAE
    thanks

Personally, I think that the Tekton set is better but there is certainly nothing wrong with a Kobalt set especially if there's a reason for buying it as you mentioned!

The ship has sailed (mostly) but $370 playing games with Sears’ SYW would have gotten you like 4 times as much as the amount of Tekton you got.

I'm a Snap-On collector of many years. I could tell many good stories and even some bad stories about Snap-On. In the end of the day, Snap-On is a WELL KNOWN and WELL RECOGNIZED brand with very GOOD QUALITY tools and GUARANTEED stable resale value. You buy Snap-On you enjoy Snap-On and if some day you no longer need them, you can always recoup much if not all of your initial investment, because the new Snap-On prices go up year after year. There aren't many other tools that can match that and Tekton is sure NOT one of those. No one will ever pay money for any used Tekton tools. What ever money you paid for them is lost forever. Snap-On is almost as good as buying gold. Look at it is an investment. THAT is the real difference!

Used tools are worthless. Snap-On warranty is void with a second owner. Lifetime is only lifetime of the original purchaser. Warranty is non-transferrable. Now let's see your receipt you little sweaty ball sack.
