Why load a circuit?

  • This is a quick video showing why you should use an incandescent light to properly load test your powers and grounds. Using just powerprobe tip doesn’t show that bad ground and either does the led bulb. Don’t get burned!

    The way to check for a background with a power probe is to Apply power to it and if the ground is good the breaker should Pop immediately

    I've also been using taillight bulbs and other higher wattage bulbs. Also sometime hook them up in tandem or even series. I'm in Minnesota, where rust and corrosion is a serious problem. It's usually bad connection or rotten wires. Hardly ever have to replace a module unless it's really corroded.

      @ronunderwood5771 3 роки тому

      @@tharindutest9930 I will try. Cody did a great job with this video but IMHO it would have been clearer if he would have hooked the incandescent test light to a good ground after his test. To highlight the difference. The light would have been bright meaning good ground and power. In the video the light is dim and seems to flicker meaning bad ground.
      In circuits controlled by Field Effect Transistors there can be something called leakage current aka "ghost voltage" A Digital Volt Ohm (DVOM) is so sensitive it detects that. Because a DVOM put no significant load on the circuit. So you get a reading that is not really there. As soon as a load is put on it it fails. LEDs draw minute amounts of amperage so they do not provide enough load to fail the circuit.
      The "old school" analog meters DO put a useful load circuit. If he had used an analog meter he would have read either zero or very low voltage. I have a couple test lights, some homemade. They each draw a different amount of amperage.. 0.8, 2.1 and 2.9A, I have them marked. I am putting a link to a doc. that does explains about the FET's. Link is good for 4 days. Hope it works in youtube. I am using dropbox. The link is safe. Hope this helps. www.dropbox.com/t/E5l4lE8TBBoQmPKN

      now if you load tested that strand of wire with a bulb you would see a huge differece in dimness compared to the starter cable.

      voltage drop is always the best method but can only be done when you have current flow.therfore this draw test should be a trick everyone should know because many times we dont have current flow hense why were working on the car...you could however simulate a circuit by wiring in a bulb that would draw around the same amps as the device and do a voltage drop on a system that didnt have current.

      @@codysautodiagnosticsprogra8706 Hi Cody, This popped up on my feed. Great video. I'm not an automotive tech, but I am schooled in electronic systems. I use a multimeter to check from the ground wire to the frame across the ground connection. The trick is the meter has to be on the mega-ohm scale. To make sure it is set right, I pinch one lead in my left fingers and the other in my right fingers. If the meter is set right, I get a reading. If it is not (too low of setting) I get OL. Once the meter is set properly, I compare the reading across the ground connection with what I get when I touch the two test leads together. I believe this method is even more sensitive than the incandescent light bulb. Play with it and you'll have a back up for your method.
      PS: My first method would be to loosen the ground terminal, spray on some WD-40, wiggle it around, and re-tighten it. I give every ground point, and battery terminals, a squirt of WD-40 at every oil change.
