I ran the Truglo TFOs on my Springfield XD-40 subcompact for twelve years. The tritium finally quit (although the sights still work as straight fiber optic sights), so I recently replaced them with the Truglo TFX Pros. Both sight systems are great - you can't go wrong with Truglo stuff.

I got around to running big dots on all my defensive pistols. When training I found it difficult to go from sight to sight. The same sight on all my guns makes it easier when the shit hits the fan. A wise old man once said about carrying, “same gun, same place, all the time.” When you really need it quick you don’t have time to try to remember where you put it or what type of sights are on this particular gun. Sounds like pretty solid advise to me.

Smart advice im a new shooter and looking for some advice on sights. I went with I dot Pro on my Glock 19 and like them but have trouble picking up the front for my eyes for some reason. I just got today the 43x and want to get big dots think I will.

I really wish the manufacturers would start offering a blacked out rear with a fiber front. They are the best bang for the buck. They are already MIMing a lot of the sights and installing a fiber can't cost much more than programing a robot to paint the white dots or having a person do it.
Ameriglos and fibers are great if you are on a budget but if you've got the time matching a Trijicon HD front with a blacked out rear is the current way to go. But you're pretty much limited to glocks and Smith and Wesson M&Ps if you want your POA/POI to be correct.
I like pretty much anything will a subdued rear and a bright front.
Night Fission sights also look interesting but time will tell. They are selling just the fronts for $40.00 but no word on the height so I'm not sure what rears they would match with.

XS Big Dot for self defense and Standard Dot for competition are the BEST sights... lateral target acquisition is amazing as is the speed... lining up the sight at night is so natural.. they are on all my handguns. :)

I am fan of the TFX PRO sights. I have had the big dots and they worked well for me. I had the Amriglow on a G19 and the tritium portion glowed well but seemed small to my57 year old eyes lol. I just bought a set of Ameriglo Spartan operators for my Glock 43, I had a set of Trijicon HD sights on it but I was hitting 6” low at 7 yards which for me was way too far off. The factory sights were dead accurate. I contacted Trijicon to see if they’d send me a shorter front sight post but they wanted me to send in my slide and I wasn’t interested in giving up my concealed carry gun for that long.
So I sent back the Trijicon HD’s back to Brownells and picked up the Ameriglos. Haven’t had a chance to test them yet.
Great video thanks for showing some different options.

For the last few years I've fallen in love with 2 dot sights, such as Ameriglo I Dot Pros, Heinie Straight 8's, And Warren Tactical Sevigny 2 dots. Which are all great, now for the last few months I've been playing with the Frank Proctor Y notch fiber optics, and I really like them. The Trijicon HDs were my first decent intro to night sights, which I still own and like. But, I have found my eyes like a square notch rather then a U notch. Good stuff as always brother.

Harry's Holsters I used to look down on fiber optics, but I told myself to stop being closed minded and try new things. I have since found that I really like the sight picture, along with cost, and ease of fixing the front sight if it were to break compared tritium. I also like how they interact with a flashlight in low light situations. I plan on putting some on my 2.0 compact pretty soon.

Nice review. Prefer tru-glo much brighter in low light than trijicon side by side, but the fastest most accurate for my vision is the lolly pop or i-dot system. Sig had them standard equipment on the p220 and p226 when they first introduced them mid to late 80's and referred to the style as "combat sights" in white contrast. The fastest sights I've ever used.

Somewhere I read a stat that summarized actual defensive shooting incidents. It was 3/3/3. Meaning: Total time of engagement-3 seconds, distances of parties involved-3 feet, and lastly total shots fired- 3 shots exchanged between good guy/ bad guy. These were averages. Since then I've come to appreciate the advice of a fellow who taught to shoot 40 years ago. The rule he gave me was regarding instinctive/ point shooting. The handgun you choose must be a natural pointer for you. Don't totally rely on any sight. You won't have much time to use them. If it doesn't point for you, pick something else that will.

My SIG Sauer P 220 came with X Ray-3 sights, so I left them on; good enough. My Beretta 92X came with a blacked out rear and a stupid orange front sight that I can't see to save my life (I never understood the value of a blacked out rear sight); so it's XS Big Dots for the Beretta!

Great vid! My eyes like a blacked out rear with a fiber optic front. If you are looking for good fiber optic sights try the Frank Proctor Y-notch sights or the Taran Tactical Sights. The frank proctor sights are kinda like the big dots up close with the huge y notch at the top of the sight then at distance the lower portion of the sight can be used to allow for perfect alignment because the front post is larger then the lower portion of the rear post. I know it sounds kinda confusing but after a few hundred rounds you get a feel for them

Not a fan of the big sights. Had em on my rig at one point, and they do have their merits for quick acquisition, however hand to adjust presentation as most of my guns are traditional 3 dot though with training I adapted. Again, anything can be over come with training, however to be consistent and to avoid confusing new shooters, I eventually got rid of the XS big dots. Not saying they don't work; that's the beauty of the gun market, you can customize to your preferences.

I have HiViz sights on my Ruger Security 9, green front and red rear, but I'm thinking about putting Big Dots on it. On my Sig 320 I have stock sights, except I did mark the front sight with an orange marker ( not nail polish or model paint) The good thing about using that is I can remove it easy with goog remover. My Springfield XD mod 2 has stock sights. since it is my newest gun, bought it in early Dec. and haven't had as much range time with it yet.

Everything comes down to what you are using your gun as. XS big dot are the best no light personal self defense sight in my opinion. Now if I'm running a gun with a light more sights become great sights. If for some reason your light doesn't work I like the F8 from XS or a any figure 8 style with a moderate front sight should work and you could still argue Big dots for that reason alone. Now for a pure range/race gun sight XS sight fall off and fiber optic sights jump up for me. Cause for just fun shooting fiber optics are a blast and I could argue just as good as a RMR dot sight. But RMR is awesome I can say once you get into it but just pull and shoot with crazy accuracy no major readjustment needed would be my argument against and at first target acquisition horrible, well it was for me. Probably half second slower compared to a clunky 3 dot and a full second over XS Big dots. But once you have them close to a 3 dot. The accuracy and continuous close target acquisition is superb.

Asking these questions out of ignorance because I don't know
    1. Does anyone ever think that the big dots are so big that it hurt you at longer ranges?
    2. I picked up a gun that has Dawson fiber optic front sights and it's a very thin tube and more of a gun that allows me to shoot further distances.
    3. I have a CZ po1 and I really don't care about my rear sights but would like to change my front sight does anyone have a suggestion for only changing my front sight and keeping my factory rear sights?

      1. Big dots can be used for distance with obvious drawbacks, however keep in mind what would you consider a max distance for self defense. Big dots are a self defense sight.

      3. Get yourself truglo tritium pros affordable and excellent sights front and back. I have them on 2 of my p01's

I would like a big or very bright front sight. Now I'm kind of use to fiber optic in day, so I'm not sure about giving that up. Is your recommendation TruGlo TFX? I tell u I sure like the fiber optic on my shotgun for duck season.
Do u know besides Truglo, what other sights have have fiber optic and tritium sights that are quality sights? I like those big dots! But I would like to see them in orange ,red or green. But if u say the white stands out during daylight and night time I might check them out. I like that snow cone sight u mentioned, what's the official term for that sight. How are the Hi Vizz H3 sights if u know?
Thanks if u have time to answer all my questions.

I tend to go twords the ameriglo Spartans. But on my cz's I have the 3 dot night sights from Cajun gun works. Either way like most people I have to have some kind of night sights on my pistols. it bothers me even if they spend most of their time in the safe if they have contrast sights lol

Hi, Great video and very informative. how are the big dots on the PPQ, do they shoot point of a point of impact?. I just got the trijicon HD Orange. i need to take them to the range to try them out.

    • @1776orbust
      @1776orbust  6 років тому

Walter the big dots are unique in the fact that it's basically point and shoot because the dot is very large I wouldn't exactly say it's the most Marksman type site but it'll do the job basically just run the dot over what you're pointing at and it's going to hit the target I think they're am excellent self-defense site one of these days I'm going to try the standard size. To see if it makes a difference
