  • Part of the series on "signature songs that are actually covers"...
How a cover of a cover of a cover became Birmingham Reggae band UB40’s signature song.
Birmingham Band UB40 took their name from Unemployment Benefit form 40 as all the members of the band were ou of work when they formed.
Initially, their music was mostly political and social commentary inspired by the trials of living in 80s Britain under the leadership of "the iron lady" Maggie Thatcher.
Their albums sold very well, usually making the top 10 album charts but they lacked a bonafide hit single.
So with pressure to release a new album, they decided to record an album of covers of what they thought were Reggae songs...one of the songs turned out be a relatively unknown Neil Diamond song and the rest, as they say, is history....

My Dad was a massive early Neil Diamond fan so I remember that version first. UB40s cover of a cover of a cover is superb and deserved all that success.

While the band members of UB40 say they were inspired by Tony Tribes version, to me, their arrangement sounds closer to The Jimmy James and the Vagabonds recording

there are at least 2, possibly 3 bands calling themselves UB40 at the moment. The one with Ali Campbell and Astro (before he died) was the one that would have sounded closest to the 80s UB40. But as Ali officially left the group in 2007 the band led by Ali's brother Robin is technically the "original" UB40.

Hi, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
That's quite right, it's the fourth album they released, but it's their 3rd "studio album" which is what I say in the video.

@@Traxploitation I also seem to have a vague memory of an album called 'Present arms in dub' but I can't remember what year 😆
Labour of love is my favourite UB40 album, I was about 14 at the time and our little gang of mates always listened to that LP. My favourite song on there has to be Johnny too bad 👍

If the world could come together occasionally and agree to ban one song from existing ever again, I would imagine UB40’s version of Red Red Wine would be a strong candidate 🤣

Informative video, but in Jamaican music the term 'rap' is referred to as 'Toasting' and was the inspiration for early rappers in the U.S. Toasting was around a long time beforehand. You should check out the early work of URoy and Dennis Alcapone. It would make an interesting and informative video.

      Thanks for the comment.
I've already touched on the toasters and deejays like U-roy, count machucki and big youth....check my video on Josey Wales...ua-cam.com/video/7XG1IXq4Q7g/v-deo.html
I referred to it as a rap here as that's how it is credited on some UB40 album covers..."Astro's Rap"... it would have been a little long winded to explain the history of rapped vocals and reggae toasting on a short video about one song. But stay tuned as I will be doing full videos on them all.
Ps. I'm actually Jamaican/British myself...so these reggae stories are a labour of love...scuse the pun.

@@Traxploitation Thanks for doing these Jamaican pieces, they are fantastic. I know UB40 are Brits but they put on great live shows in their prime mainstream years. I've seen a lot of Jamaican artist live in the 80's-90's, and prefer reggae authentic, but UB40 took it up notch with their professional live act. Present Arms in Dub is my favorite full length recording by them. You should do one on IRoy or Nicodemus, Dennis Brown etc..

Neil Diamond DID NOT write Red red wine he bought the song at the Brill Building in New York.

    • @Traxploitation
      @Traxploitation  Рік тому

Neil Diamond started his career as a writer in the Brill Building. What makes you think he bought this, or any song, from another writer there? 🤔
