    My thoughts as a long-time subscriber 🥰
    - I appreciate you showing your not-so-great projects, because everybody has them and it makes me feel better about my sewing :)
    - I don't mind videos being split in 2 or 3 parts as long as the project you're working on is really interesting and the videos are still long (about 20 minutes each)
    - I think you just had a bad luck with this dress. In the future, when you'll have your basic blocks patterns, it shouldn't be a problem for you to make a dress like this in a week.
    - I also think it is a good idea to upload a more simple video (like a Q&A or lifestyle content) when you are working on a complicated project so you'd have 2 weeks to work on it.

Thank you for bringing up the subject at the end of balancing quality with deadline! I think it’s so important. If you want my opinion I think even “smaller” projects can easily be split into a series of videos. I know you said it’s not that interesting but for people who enjoy sewing content it’s the exact opposite! It’s even more interesting because there’s simply more of it!
Hope you’re able to find a solution you’re happy with🥰

I wholly recommend the Closet Historian as a resource for block patterns. I also recommend making bodice mock-ups, as they are SUCH an investment. You make your adjustments to the mock-up, take it apart, cut down the pieces if need be, and boom! You have a cloth pattern uniquely tailored to you that will last forever ❤

I think the idea of a multi part series that goes from concept to several stages of sewing to final product is a great idea! I'm also a sewist, and it would be extremely helpful to see you go in depth with all of those stages (it would be a real learning opportunity!) I also think the dress is adorable, and we are our own worst critics.

Just take as long as you need and post when it’s done, no matter what kind of project it is; I think this would be best for you and I don’t think your subscribers would mind. At least I wouldn’t. :) I prefer to see you relaxed and happy with the results of your work 😊

I’ve watched your videos for a long time, and I’ve gotta say, I love that you’re honest! Your content has changed so much throughout the years, but it’s always “you,” so the core hasn’t changed a bit. Never stop being honest!
I know everyone else in the comments has already said it, but the fact that you share your mistakes/things you weren’t happy about with the dress helps everyone here learn. I always feel like such a failure when I’m staring at sewing projects on my desk, stumped, and wondering where I went wrong. These videos help me to remember that sewing is a journey, and everyone makes mistakes- but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it and share the process in a positive way.

Watching this had me in awe! Completed in 4 days?! There is nothing simple, nor "cut-corner" about that, Lucy! This dress is a SOLID EFFORT, and though I understand your thoughts on the construction, as well as your mistakes, I think the result is very pretty. 💜 The effect to my eyes is one of climbing roses on damask and silk.
Oh, and putting together a collection of patterns of different cuts in your size? That's brilliant! 🎉 You'll be able to do recreations and flesh out your inspirations! I hope you'll be able to find patterns that you'll love.

Something that may help you with fitting, especially in the backs, is to use chalk or washout pen to draw a line where your expected centre back is. Then, use big bulldog clips from an office supply store to clip it on that same line every time. You can even hand baste a cb line if you're worried about it rubbing off. Sewing is all about making mistakes and learning what works or doesn't work for you, especially when you are making garments for yourself. It's great to see your process, as it shows the very reality of sewing for all stages.

As someone who has made sewing videos -- I struggle greatly with how to edit down all of the process - the many individual steps that it takes to make complex garments. I worry people don't want to watch long videos, but yet I find that showing the process really resonates with the people who do watch my stuff (and it's what I like to watch - the problem solving, the fitting, the mockup .... all of that is interesting and educational). For me as a viewer/subscriber, I really don't mind multi-part videos or longer videos. I like your content and will watch just about any video you post. Same with other creators that I've subscribed to.

I love that you show your mistakes. It lets the rest of us learn from those mistakes. I do not know if it would be doable but maybe alternate the sewing videos (giving you 2 weeks to finish a project) with a much smaller project (like updating us on the garden or how you put together your clothing into cute outfits). You can always take a poll to see what else you can do but the secondary thing should be easy for you to film, edit, and do in general. Hope this helps.

I think it's great that you're always so honest in your videos! It makes you real and unique which stands out from a lot of other content creators that make everything look perfect and set the standards far too high. As your viewers we can learn from the things that you might do differently a second time, or we can relate because we might make mistakes too. I also think it's only natural that you can't finish a sewing project including editing a video in a week. Especially since you taught yourself how to sew and you've only been doing it for a few years. You're also tackling really tough projects! I have been sewing for 10 years and did it professionally for a few years, but I would never dare to tackle some of the complicated things you do and I'm always positively surprised by your results! Your weddingdress for instance, omg! You should really be very proud of what you accomplish and the internet should not force you to hide imperfections or to be faster in my opinion. I understand making video's is also your income so skipping a week might not feel like an option when the sewing project is taking a bit longer than expected. But maybe a shorter, chatty video in between to give you some more sewing time, might help? Anyway, I think you're doing great and I'm definitely here to watch more sewing content, even if I have to wait a little longer for a video :)

Another way for the hemming trick...you can also do it by making your iron super hot instead of using a flame. And dont run the iron over the fabric but hold the fabric edge to it just like you’d do it for flame.

What I mean is, I love that you take your time and wonder about the options aloud. I get to think about the solutions as you go along, and it feels rather freeing to see someone else struggling with similar themes. In essence, please don't feel rushed to complete a project or get things right, as it is the companionship in learning as a discerning hobbyist and the process that are the most intriguing. Tutorials, constant flashy results and successes are secondary . I do love to see the creations, but struggle with time and stylistic/construction choises too. It really is the self-reflection and companionship in the process that im really here for. Also wow, you’re creating TWO artistic works each week by trying to finish a sewing video-the video itself and the sewing. No wonder it’s stressful-that’s a lot!
Also, your videos are still enjoyable when your additional artwork (aka the sewing) isn’t perfect. It’s actually relatable. I know you wanted the dress to be really nice for your own personal wear-so what I’m saying is, I’d suggest seeing the goals of sewing nice clothes and making entertaining/successful videos as two parallel goals that can be achieved at different places instead of an intertwined goal. It’s not necessary for them to be on the same schedule because the journey videos are still interesting.
    Best of luck!

As for sewing mockups that should zip up, the only thing that actually worked for me was to have an actual zipper sewn into a mock up. I just have a separate "mockup zipper" that I sew into all of my mock ups and then seam rip it when I need it for a new mock up.

But seeing that other people experience those same issues is validating. On the other hand, you might sew an amazing garment, do everything right, take a lot of time, and then in the end you put it on and just don't like it, and that's the chance you have to take as a sewist. I always want to post videos saying how great my project turned out but the reality is I can't lie either haha I seem to be known as the one who makes constant mistakes 🤣 but as others have said, it's really comforting to see someone go through the same thing and make mistakes because otherwise it can feel very isolating and like you're alone making mistakes whilst everyone else gets it right all the time. I really appreciate your videos with mistakes mentioned and what you did wrong and what you'd change.
Also, I'd be happy to see a mock up video and the 'real' one.

If I wanted a polished tutorial I'd do an online course; if I just wanted pretty swirly video I'd go to TikTok 😊 I personally also don't mind multi-video projects - if Tolkien could randomly cut a story into bits because it would otherwise be too long, so can you ;)

While it is always fun to watch someone make something and have fun with it, I personally mostly just watch the crafts I myself also want to do, or am doing. And I feel like I've learnt so much from your projects, ESPECIALLY when you weren't happy with some aspects of the results, and talked us through it! I totally get that for you it doesn't feel as satisfying when that happens, but from this side of the computer, I'm having a great time lol. So please don't worry! This was great to watch, and I feel like I've learnt a lot. Also, I second all the q&a suggestions!

I am glad that you are honest with us. Plus, it is nice to know that you do mistakes aswell. Oftentimes I feel like I am the only one who sews something and ends up not loving it.
I like the Idea of doing little Videos inbetween projects. Could be a Talking Video, a Q and A, your fabric stash or maybe some Ideas for fabric leftovers. I would love that :)
Thanks for the nice Video! :)

Been watching your channel since the older sock bun hair curling video. I'm also a struggling beginner sewist. I like that you share your mistakes. I think you're the only youtuber that does that. It feels authentic and vulnerable and very endearing. It also encourages me to see that oh, other people struggle too, it's not just me. :)

please just make a series of multiple videos for each project and make each dress the best quality you can so that you can enjoy wearing them. do the patterning, the mock up, the fitting, the assembly...take as many videos as you need to tell the whole story. we sure enjoy watching your videos, so i am sure we all will be happy to be along for the ride! i'd have been delighted to see a mock-up with all those bodice pattern changes--and it would have gotten you a better dress in the end. trying to make such a complicated dress in a week while filming, editing, etc. is way too much to ask of yourself, and i don't think your audience really asks it of you, either. i think we'd all be happier if YOU were happier! :) xoxoxoxoxoxo

    @olgahein4384 Рік тому

First of all, the editing was GREAT especially for the little amount of time you had left for it. And then, i personally love you for showing and explaining the flaws and mistakes in your sewing and how it impacts the result. That is not only so charming, but incredibly helpful for my own sewing journey. You are human, just like me, and seeing you fail a bit now and then reminds me that it's totally ok for me to fail too. And i'm very sure that i don't stand alone with this.
As for your content, i will totally watch this split into several videos. Not everyone sews with high speed, and doing alterations or pattern hacks is something that needs time. I would have loved to see that in more detail actually.
And yeah, a mock up would have been very helpful for changing so much on a fitted bodice. That could have been its own video easily and the sewing of the finished garnment another video. You could actually speed that mock up process up a bit, by using the lining fabric for it and do all the changes on that, to then use it as a pattern for the outer fabrics. Lining fabric is often cheaper than outer fabric and even if you have not as much left, it's normally far easier to purchase more of it if needed.
Don't stress yourself to make a garnment every week, take the time you need to actually enjoy the process and more importantly to do it as well as you can, so you can enjoy the finished garnment afterwards. That's what we are sewing for afterall. And if you don't have a video for the week because of that, you can always do a Q&A while mending your clothes (if you have to) or doing hand sewing on your product (if you have to) or just do some other handiwork and have a cup of tea.
I personally realized, after you started your moving and renovating videos, that i really enjoy them too, so i guess it's your videos that i like even if it's not about sewing.

I think you can definitely divide up your larger project videos into multiple weeks. Like do one video going over the design/sketching, 2nd video for the mock up, and 3rd video for the final dress. This fabric by itself is interesting enough on its own to have multiple videos for a really fabulous outfit

I very much appreciate getting to see that even the inspiring creators that I love to watch make mistakes and work on projects that don't come out too well. It's really helping me to be a little more lenient with myself and also follow through with a project or find another solution to resolve what issues I have instead of just giving up, like I normally do. I appreciate going on this journey to make the perfect garden gown with you. I can't wait to see the next version where you get just a little bit better and closer to reaching your sewing goals ❤
P.s. (23:05) It is your best effort that makes your content worth viewing, not the most perfectly sewn project.

This might be a weird thing to comment on in a sewing video, but I *really* appreciate your music choices, and perhaps even more so your music volume! You just wouldn't believe how many people make you turn up the vocals and down the music over and over, but your balance is perfect! Ty! It all makes the vibe of your channel kind of magical/fairy garden-y, which I think is what you're going for, so, well done!

Whether or not the garment is perfect, or needs some work Your videos are still great and very very informative. And thank you for showing your work when it does have mistakes and when it doesn’t because this is real sewing. Honestly the reason I love your channel is for the reflection parts you put in video's where you evaluate your project. So if you can't finish a gown properly in a week, then that's a valuable lesson! I loved the decision to make an instagram dress and then make a more wearable version of it. So what if it didn't work this time? I watch your video's for the experimentation, not for perfection.

As for the trying on phase: I pin or tack the zip in place so that it's held in place and I get the best idea of how it will fit.

One thing that I do when pattern testing on myself is I put the closure in the front. Even if it’s going’s to close in the back, I test it with a front close so I can check the back fit. Once I have that solid, I can do the back close version to double check the front fit. But you might be able to have some cute little cottage core lacing along the sides like linen naive often does with their dresses? That could help it fit more snuggly. It’s a cute dress tho!

hi !! first of all, keep doing sewing videos, we love them, just take your time, this particular dress could have benefited from a two part video, as you say, it's a great idea, but you really can't cut corners on sewing. Second, I think the bodice would have looked better with darts instead of princess seams, the dress itself reminds me of the Vogue 2902 vintage pattern, I think it's on etsy, and I really think that that's more around the vibes you were going for with this one. Keep going, you have come so far on your sewing projects !!!

As a long-time subscriber, I'm not here for the sewing content in particular, as I watched your channel before you started your sewing-journey (even though I do have a sewing machine, I don't have the time at the moment to pick it up as a regular hobby), I do enjoy it though! Non the less, when you said, you want to take more time with your sewing projects and just show other, more simple videos in between, I thought that was a good idea!
I myself like watching the sewing videos, when they are well done and in the end, you have a great project, that you yourself are content with.
But I enjoy the other videos a lot, too (a little more even, to be completely honest!), even if they are "simpler" 😊 I know you don't really show them anymore, but your food-releated-videos or "outfits for the day/week/..." were nice, also (especially) all the house, tea(-time) and garden content is always great!
And maybe you could bring some "nerdy"-themes (that you enjoy and are comfortable with) back? E.g. D&D or maybe something about books or movie/series you enjoy... just to provide some ideas! 😊

It's a lovely project and I usually encounter the same issues as you with the fit 😭 One thing I have tried and that works well, is to baste the back with a long thicker thread to mimic the location where the zip would be ; once the garment is on, you just need to pull on it to sort of shut the back pieces together.

Beyond the sewing content of this video, I probably took the most away from the reflection and honesty you had in it. Thank you for doing that because that sets a healthy example of growth and perseverance! Thank you for this video and I honestly love the dress!!
