12:37 Thanks for saying that. I once posted some RPG portraits that I made from my O.C.s and I used a soft brush and small canvas to make it. It was mosaic/pixelated but at the same time had a soft look into it. I was proud cause I was going for a old realistic paints looking, but at the same time it had this video-game vibe on it. I don't remember the full critic but someone criticized it saying that for pixel art I should go for a solid less gradient look - and somehow I got sad about it and decided that I shouldn't do this anymore for my art. But hearing you say that, even if only for a small detail in your art, made me happy. I think I will try again this "painted pixel art" look - maybe not everyone will like it but now I got an email for them to send their complaints XD. Sorry for the extended comment. :x
Yeah the pixel art community is very passionate, and while there is a huge amount of support in it, I've also heard a lot of stories and seen many instances of gatekeeping. It's a shame really, because it can turn people off the medium, or become intimidated by it. I completely see the perspective that there are certain guidelines for the medium, and effective practises that have been established over a period of time which people recommend, and I do agree that learning these guidelines and practising them will help you understand their effectiveness and the outcome that they produce, so you can learn when you want to use them or not - this is the same in not just pixel art, but digital art, and other traditional mediums. But it's my belief that these are simply guidelines to achieving a particular look or style, and it's an artists right to decide what they want to make, how they want to make it look, and have full decision about what techniques, approaches, or workflows they want to use in achieving that look. If you're trying to achieve a particular look/style then perhaps its best to stick to some guidelines, but experimentation and doing what feels right to you is a very important part of art as well. I often see the question 'does this count as pixel art' when attached to an art piece that deviates from expected practises, and it's exhausting, I'll personally leave the classification of art to the historians, and just enjoy making things, I'm sorry you had that experience as well, I hope you continue to create art that means something to you and is done in the way that you want it to be done :) Don't worry about what other people say, keep doing your thing!

Where was this video 2 months ago when I got into composition and perspective. I started with perspective first and by did my pantings look boring as hell. Then about 2 weeks ago I finally started looking up composition.... Now playing with it I came to the realization that composition comes first THEN perspective helps bind it to the 3D world. So it's best for me at least to create the composition of the art as it's less intensive to my brain. Then go in and create the perspective of such composition. I was trying to build perspective areas first....THEN populate that perspective with composition. What I realized is for me, this method doesn't work as I am bound by the perspective that I created to make the composition of the painting work. Composition is the most important thing that gets the person invested into the painting. When I was looking up composition I saw paintings captivate me with horrible perspective. This is when I realized my method was wrong. Of course, I only have YT and spare time with few guidance. It's a hit or miss.
Yeah both composition and perspective are important, I always do composition before perspective as well because I've found similar that no amount of clear perspective can fix a bad composition. Composition is hard too, I've found that watching films and seeing how cinematographers capture scenes has been very useful for that - and thumbnailing is vital to finding the right composition before committing to the piece, and it doesn't even take very much effort, which is nice. Keep at it Ratus, you got this! :D
Before watching this video, I thought I knew how to produce concept art, but I now have more ideas on how to go about planning and doing so, including some ideas I knew about but forgot! (4:18) I was reminded of a YT video from 'mewTripled' about having dedicated sketchbooks that didn't need to look pretty.
I just started watching this and I already love this video! Hmm how I generate ideas? I often get my illustration ideas by seeing other people's art what get me really inspired to make "that type of level of art" and sometimes even just randomly it just pops into my head in the morning, middle of the day or even as I am about to go to sleep. So in other words my brain coming up with illustration ideas can be really unpredictable since it can happen at any given point.
Thanks for sharing your insight! - I also get inspired by seeing other people's artwork, it's a fine balance between inspiration and comparing my own quality of work thinking that I suck all the time hahaha, but I love seeing what other artists are making :D
Without getting philosophical, to make 3 slices of bread into a bread sandwich, you have to either ad condiments or use a different kind of bread in the middle.
For the Generating Ideas section: If you can daydream٫ use that! As an FNF modder almost all of my lore comes from daydreaming since I can simply zone out in a few seconds allowing for quick and easy brain activity. I do have to admit however that even I need inspiration sometimes. Whether it be for mods or just straight up Gacha Club videos (just an example so please dont hate) daydreaming doesnt ALWAYS work out for me. 😇
Great tutorial, really enjoyed throughout! - just wondering how long the process took from first planning ideas to the final finished design, and what app you were using at the end?
Don't have the full time-frame but I work usually 3-4 hours a day for about a week on this, multiple sessions were streamed also, which is generally a lot slower in terms of productivity. App at the end? I use Clip Studio for this project if that's what you mean :D
Gear? Like equipment? Aseprite or Clip Studio Paint for software, a mouse for pixel art or a Wacom intuos medium for bigger pixel art or digital art :) thanks for watching
Silly question: you CAN make the same rays of light without using the brush, right? Like, you can manually adjust the colours and place the pixels with the pencil, and all the brush does is automatically adjust the colours on the edges, right? Another silly question: all (or at least most, up-to-date) software have the same colours, right? I don't know which software you're using, but does, say, Aseprite have the same colour range? Thanks!
Yes of course, you can do all of these things manually if you'd like, though it may take a while depending on the amount of steps you plan to put in. For your other question, this is an interesting one, I'm not 100% sure but I do know that some art software's use certain 'colour profiles' which can change the way things look for one piece if opened in another software. For example, I know in Photoshop it's possible to change your colour profile, which changes how colours are mapped/displayed. That's the extent of my knowledge though and I haven't looked too much into it other than that, I just use stock stuff :'D
Hey Prince Pandey, for traditional sketching just a mechanical pencil haha, but digital tools I use a wacom intuos medium, I got it second hand for about £30 and it's awesome - Hope that answers your question
The five w's: Who What Why When Where If you're ever lost or don't know what you're doing, ask these questions and trying to answer then should give you at least enough thinking to get going somewhere!
Could you explain your process just a little bit more on how you start your pieces with value instead of color? I'm trying to improve the shapes of my pixel art and something I've started to do is just draw them entirely in black to start with to see how the silhouette comes out. I'd like to see how I can incorporate a bunch of grays in as well if you'd be able to help me out ^^
The process of starting with black for silhouette is very useful, I use that a lot too. For my value painting process it's fairly simple, I start the thumbnails in black/white only to focus on shapes/composition, then when adding value, I try to limit my values to 2/3 to start with, using only mid-tones, avoiding super light or dark values. For an environment piece like this, I usually break the piece up into planes, foreground, midground, background, and assign a value for each of these planes. The exact value structure depends on what you're going for, but a typical set up is the fg is the darkest, with bg the lightest. Once I'm happy with that, I begin to add more values, ensuring that the value ranges do not mix between planes. For example, I can have highlights + shadows in midground, but those values will not be darker or lighter than the other planes, this is just to continue to keep that fg/mg/bg separation and try to achieve depth. An important thing, is to try to gather reference for the particular set up and study the values as I did in this video, it really helps a lot, as in this piece, the midground had a different value structure than what I'm typically using :) Hope that can help, any other questions let me know. Our discord is full of people you can ask too, feel free to ping me anytime
@@saultoons first of all, thank you for getting back to me and so fast :D Second, I appreciate the advice. I like to keep things simple to going with about 3 values to start with will definitely help me out. Also, I never use mid-tones, I like to make sure shifts in value "matter", "are meaningful" if you know what I mean ^^;. I basically cover a large piece of the spectrum when choosing values, so what you said here is something I'll give a try. Finally, I'm not on discord, but now I'll read on it so I can join yours! Thanks again ^^
@@kwonsoon7048 Yeah that makes sense. I think my usage of mid-tones is more so that I have the most control over the contrast. When I use a lot of mid-tones to start with, avoiding the high/low values, it does look more muted to begin with, but if I can get a value structure that looks right with mid-tones, I can then start to play with value ranges and putting value contrast in the places that I want to stand out. Hope that makes sense :D
could you ask the some one guest artist (who cant' draw the 2D-traditional art/sketches) to do all the same? So If I want to "control the pixel" I have to pass full course how to draw the 2D and years of practice to step to pixel art? That wasn't true, it is?
Sorry, I'm not sure I fully understand your message, but you don't need to do 2D art to transition to pixel art, if that's what you mean. Everyone's path is different, art shares a lot of commonalities between each medium :D
@@saultoons yeah, you've got right, however, the good artists that I met can draw with own hands&pencil. So as I figure out, there're two ways, 1st they could draw before pixel art, 2nd way the translate their knowledge in pixel art to learn traditional draw. For those who can't draw at start, concept things are too difficult (and Jama Jurabaev courses are not very helpful). But I'll continue my tries...
hi Saultoons .. do you know the suikoden 1/2 background ? i mean the house, ground, etc .. im curious how to make them ? is it pure by pixel art or what ? because its look blurry .. (from my theory is we just drawing using brush & make it pixel looks by using tools in photoshop (blur > Pixelate > mosaic (about 4 cell size)) because i feel the background has different type of styles from the character sprites (pixel art) itself .. sorry if my english was bad .. i hope u know what i mean
Hi Hendy, from what I can see on Google images of Suikoden1/2, in some cases it actually looks like the background is a 3D render with pixel textures, or in some cases just higher res pixel art, whereas the characters are lower res/size pixel art. If you have any specific images you want me to look at, send them on Discord in our community, or direct on social media and I'll take a look
This is Clip Studio Paint but most things shown in the video are also possible in Aseprite. Layer masking isn’t possible afaik, but the workaround is just to duplicate the layer you intend to edit so that you always have the original. Layer modes are possible in Aseprite. Correction layers don’t exist in aseprite but the same correction methods are possible in aseprite by using adjustments menu that will just be applied to all of the currently active layer :)
What did you use to collect your references together, like what app/ Online site? I've been using Pinterest but I dislike how hard it is to find the artists of work and how the pool of pictures is limited. Edit:Clarity
At 12:16 it would be funny if you cut away to the pixel art enthusiast pushing his glasses up with one finger.. glasses that are taped together, of course.
Game design can be difficult, but maybe start by asking what is unique about your character, and what abilities or game mechanics could be fun with that characters unique features. For example: you might have a character that is very bald, maybe the baldness is used as a reflective light to solve puzzles hahaha :'D Feel free to join the community on Discord, people can help you out there! :D
I am having trouble coming up with ideas for the romance side of things for my female main character (who has a cruch on a guy (who is not interested at first)) for the game that is not cliche. Trying to come up with something edgy and something people can relate to.
Writing is difficult, I have no idea :'D You may get a better answer on our community Discord, I know Kate, one of the mods there is a full-time writer with lots of experience in romance writing, who would easily answer this question :)
Are you going to give the challenges a go?!?!?!?!?!?!? Send them on social media or discord if you do, I'd love to see

Yeah I suppose that is the right way, it has to be something other than the same bread for it to qualify as a sandwich
HYPE!!!
HYPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MOKU IN THE CHAT LETS GOOOO
Damn, should watch your video 1st before I draw. Really helps to shape my concept of drawing. Really appreciate it.
Thanks for the kind words HyperBeaver, I appreciate you watching my friend :D
For the Generating Ideas section: If you can daydream٫ use that! As an FNF modder almost all of my lore comes from daydreaming since I can simply zone out in a few seconds allowing for quick and easy brain activity. I do have to admit however that even I need inspiration sometimes. Whether it be for mods or just straight up Gacha Club videos (just an example so please dont hate) daydreaming doesnt ALWAYS work out for me. 😇
Using the power of your BRAIN! That's cool, I would try it but my brain is smooth :D
@@saultoons Also just me being somewhat lazy lol. Plus I'm just used to it by now so why use it for FNF lore. 😇
REALLY HELPFUL
Glad you found it useful :D
For those who don't know, I sold my right kidney for this video!
I hope it was worth it :'D
@@saultoons of course
We thankyou for your service 🙏
Thank you awesome video :-)
Thanks for the love
Became subscriber for the bread joke lol. Nice video ;)
haha thanks Leo, true question though, I'll never know the answer I think haha
Good channel & videos for pixel art. Thanks
Thank you for watching :D
straight to the point...😇😁
Glad you liked it! :D
wth this was actually a good tutorial
hahah why so surprised?
i thought you only did pixel art this looks great
Yeah I did digital art long before I tried out Pixel art, maybe I should make more digital art based videos or something if people are interested :D
It's FINALLY OUT! Now, work on the next one
The pain, the suffering :'D
:')
I wish teachers in my school time were like you...
hahah well I appreciate it
Amazing. Do include it in the real game!. Probably at the start screen!
Thanks for the kind words, everything is changing in my game, but you'll have to wait and see the next video for that :D
Saultoons our lord and saviour!
Waters, what a legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That get a life felt such a personal attack .😄😄
hahah it was more directed at myself :'D life brings us experience which brings us ideas
what a cool video. :)
Thanks! 😃Glad you liked it Daniel
love Saultoons video :D
Thanks so much
Great tutorial, really enjoyed throughout!
What software would you recommend?
Ive been watching this vid again again and again dir 3 months, and i still wonderin what gear you use?
@@saultoons Oh, ok. Thank you so much!
I hope Phil is an Easter egg in that game
haha that's a good idea!!! I'll do it :D
HOW HAVE I MISSED SO MANY UPLOADS

Hey!what hardwares tools do you use for Sketching?
Hey Prince Pandey, for traditional sketching just a mechanical pencil haha, but digital tools I use a wacom intuos medium, I got it second hand for about £30 and it's awesome - Hope that answers your question
I can get my ideias when I tell what I think for someone or write down on somewhere
Nice Daniel! :D Thanks for sharing

That's pretty awesome, do you write down the ideas?
Awesome video, but where's Mr. Lumberjack?
Maybe chilling inside cooking some nice food
May I know what software/application you are using to create this amazing pixel art?
Clip studio paint, though any will do :D
1:35 We actually that last question
Is important
An important thing, is to try to gather reference for the particular set up and study the values as I did in this video, it really helps a lot, as in this piece, the midground had a different value structure than what I'm typically using :)
Hope that can help, any other questions let me know. Our discord is full of people you can ask too, feel free to ping me anytime
@@saultoons first of all, thank you for getting back to me and so fast :D
Second, I appreciate the advice.
What program are you using here? It’s not aseprite is it?
No I use Clip Studio Paint for this, it has automatic recording which is NOICE :D
"If you put a slice of bread between two 2 slices of bread is it a bread sandwich or 3 slices of bread?"
Thats actually a good question
Yeah for real I still don't know
@@saultoons lol
could you ask the some one guest artist (who cant' draw the 2D-traditional art/sketches) to do all the same?
Lol man beat me
You were close tho, thanks for your dedication

Can you do this layer stuff in aseprite ? Or have you moved on to photoshop now ?
This is Clip Studio Paint but most things shown in the video are also possible in Aseprite.
Layer masking isn’t possible afaik, but the workaround is just to duplicate the layer you intend to edit so that you always have the original.
Layer modes are possible in Aseprite.
Correction layers don’t exist in aseprite but the same correction methods are possible in aseprite by using adjustments menu that will just be applied to all of the currently active layer :)
@@saultoons awesome thanks for the input ! Sorry I thought it was photoshop looks very similar if I’m not mistaken lol
@@thebutcher1412 Yes it's very similar haha, though it is £12931029312903812 cheaper :'D
@@saultoons yeah I immediately researched it after I saw how awesome this drawing was. I don’t think I’m at this level yet but hopefully one day soon

NO! You can do whatever medium you want, I encourage some experimentation :)
@@saultoons ok!
What’s a good website to get good reference pictures from? I always look for stuff like mushroom reference but can never find anything
I usually just use google images, pinterest, or tumblr.
What did you use to collect your references together, like what app/ Online site? I've been using Pinterest but I dislike how hard it is to find the artists of work and how the pool of pictures is limited.
Edit:Clarity
I usually use Pinterest, Artstation, Tumblr, Instagram, Google images and put it together in pureref
In one of the fonts you used in the video, the lowercase b looks more like a 6 to me
Maybe it is :o
Please try making a game or concept art in Dreams for PS4!!
I don't have it but that would be dope!
At 12:16 it would be funny if you cut away to the pixel art enthusiast pushing his glasses up with one finger.. glasses that are taped together, of course.
haha yeah true
How can I get inspiration for making a game based on a character?
Game design can be difficult, but maybe start by asking what is unique about your character, and what abilities or game mechanics could be fun with that characters unique features. For example: you might have a character that is very bald, maybe the baldness is used as a reflective light to solve puzzles hahaha :'D Feel free to join the community on Discord, people can help you out there! :D
@@saultoons I have joined some :D
I get mine from dreams that I have
ooo nice, I should start writing down my dreams I think
I am having trouble coming up with ideas for the romance side of things for my female main character (who has a cruch on a guy (who is not interested at first)) for the game that is not cliche. Trying to come up with something edgy and something people can relate to.
Writing is difficult, I have no idea :'D You may get a better answer on our community Discord, I know Kate, one of the mods there is a full-time writer with lots of experience in romance writing, who would easily answer this question :)
Dont you use Aseprite anymore?
Yeah but mainly for animation work, clip studio has in built Timelapse recording which is too useful for video making not to use
