- The autonomous territory of Somaliland is one of the most strategically located areas in Africa. It sits near a global shipping chokepoint, is just across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen, and neighbors Djibouti which hosts, among others, the U.S.’s only permanent military base in Africa and China’s first permanent overseas military base. Over the last three decades, Somaliland has built a still-consolidating but tenacious democracy while also serving as a bastion of relative stability in the tumultuous East Africa region that is increasingly resistant to U.S. influence. In 2020, it established diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
Yet no country, including the U.S., recognizes Somaliland as independent despite its three decades-long practice of independence. By resting its policy for that region in part on the myth that Somaliland is functionally part of the rest of Somalia, the U.S. misses the opportunity to reward a home-grown, pro-American democracy, shore up its position in a strategic part of Africa, and honor the consistent aspirations for independence of millions of Somalilanders.

An old newspaper archive named Aberdeen Evening Express reported that the UN trusteeship territory of Somalia merged with the sovereign state of Somaliland.
A sovereign country can't legally join a trusteeship territory, thus Somalia made an attempt to join Somaliland instead.💥

Imagine being a very poor country left to the wolves (China is pissed off that Somaliland is supporting the Democratic country of Taiwan; The failed state of Somalia is pissed off that Somaliland left the failed union; almost all neighbors are failed states and or have dictators as their leaders) and yet Somaliland stayed the Democratic Republic with very little help from the West (that actually supposed to help other democracies around the world otherwise the communists will definitely take advantage and will ''help'' those democracies).
If the U.S. doesn't recognize Somaliland it will be one of their biggest mistakes when it comes to their foreign affairs. Because China will then take advantage and will eventually gain superiority over the Bab El Mandeb area. The Chinese are already close with Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Yemen will side with China (because the U.S. supported S.A.'s attack on Yemen), S.A. is already ignoring Biden's calls to increase oil production. Is the U.S. waiting to get kicked out from the Bab El Mandeb critical area? I am confused.
Recognizing might bring stability for the U.S. to that entire region. Somaliland is already on good terms with Ethiopia and Ethiopia wants to keep the good relationship going. Djibouti and Somaliland are basically very close brothers and sisters as is Ethiopia and Eritrea. Somaliland can help stabilize Somalia.
Even without all this Somaliland deservers to be recognised by the U.S.. Why in the world is the U.S. scared? I am very confused. If the U.S. takes the lead on recognising Somaliland the A.U. will follow definitely, so will the E.U.
👏Very well put... I strongly believe the U.S will be the first and tbh the only country that can start the domino effect of recognising Somaliland. I also strongly believe that Somaliland will allow USA to have a base, and a navel base will be more effective in this situation. The UK are already invested with dp world at berbera port, its all just a matter of time. Recognition will come, but these deals and relations that Somaliland is currently making are what is needed in the beginning. Well done to the ppl of Somaliland. From making the greatest mistake when they joined southern Somalia, to not being influenced or bribed by chinas millions of dollars unlike the other African leaders.

Even though China offered Somaliland huge amounts of money and built infrastructures for Somaliland (which the country really needs at the moment tbh) Somaliland said no to China if that will mean kicking out Taiwan. Seriously Somaliland should be in every news around the world (at least the democratic countries) because what they did is beyond brave. Somaliland went even above and beyond by being the first country in the world that accept Taiwan's Representative Office to use Taiwan's name instead of Taipei. Lithuania was the second country to do so not long ago actually.
But all this can fade away if another party wins the presidential election that is fed up with waiting for the west to recognize Somaliland and they might want to go on the Chinese side which will be a huge blow for the U.S. and all other democracies around the world.

Thirty years ago, as Somalia descended into civil war , the northwestern part of the country seceded. It declared itself independent under the name of Somaliland. For thirty years, this country has been seeking diplomatic recognition, as a good neighbor and respecting international rules. However, it is not recognized. Why ?✅

Somaliland was first, since 1887, a British protectorate. In 1960 it was integrated smoothly into independent Somalia which was formed after Italian colonization and tutelage. For two decades, everything went well, even if the country, with the exception of the capital Mogadishu, stagnated and suffered from a lack of development 👑

@@Baraax24 please read the history Somaliland is not the first country that united with another country and then seceded the unity. Syria and Egypt made the union of United Arab Republic in 1958 than Syria seceded from the union in 1961. Since the union was not fulfilled it political ambition. Likely Somaliland and Somalia made their union in 1960 to achieve the political ambition of great Somali republic since that do’t work and somali dictator Siyad bare regime killed more that 50000 people in Somaliland they decided to secede the union in 1991.
The world needs to deal this young democratic country instead of the failed state of Somalia.

WHY YOU MAY ASK?
For long I listened to our politicians talk about the case of recognition for THE REPUBLIC OF
SOMALILAND, and also listened to variety of arguments they present for support to our noble
cause, but I never for once heard them addressing it in a scholarly manner, that would clarify the core of the issue between Somaliland and Somalia, which I believe it will be resolved easily if only
we present our case in a manner that will make it easier for outsiders to understand.
Let us talk about the history for a moment. In 26june 1960 BRITISH SOMALILAND gained
independence from GREAT BRITAIN as the STATE OF SOMALILAND 5 days later 1july 1960 the TRUSTEESHIP OF ITALIAN SOMALIA gained independence from ITALY as SOMALIA, on that exact
same day 1july 1960 both sides formed a union under the new state of SOMALI REPUBLIC, on that
day both Somaliland and somalia transferred their sovereignty to the SOMALI REPUBLIC. 31january
1961 a new controversial ACT OF UNION was approved and adopted into the new constitution that
the majority of somalilanders voted against.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED
First you should know that Somaliland and Somalia united under the SOMALI REPUBLIC as equals,
and that it should be addressed as such and not as if Somaliland joined Somalia which is false.
For example
SENEGAL+GAMBIA=SENEGAMBIA.
SYRIA+EYGPT=UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC.
SENEGAL+MALI=MALI FEDERATION.
You can clearly understand that the union between Somalia and Somalia was no different from
those unions I stated above SOMALILAND+SOMALIA=SOMALI REPUBLIC.
Now the Somali republic doesn’t exist anymore so Somaliland is not seceding because there is not
Somali republic to secede from because Somalia dissolved it and nullified the union when it
unilaterally declared the federal republic of Somalia, as you can clearly see Somalia is the one that
officially dissolved the union.
SENEGAMBIA=SENEGAL-GAMBIA
UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC=SYRIA-EYGPT.
MALI FEDERATION=MALI-SENEGAL.
So what I’m trying to say with this formula is that if the thing that the two sides united to form
cease to exist the should by default regain their former status prior to the union SOMALI
REPUBLIC=SOMALILAND-SOMALIA.
Therefor the federal republic of Somalia doesn’t have any legal merits to claim Somaliland as part
of its territory because Somaliland wasn’t part of the federal republic of Somalia but was part ofthe Somali republic and only the Somali republic had a legal merit to claim Somaliland which was
the only entity Somaliland transferred it sovereignty to and that doesn’t exist anymore.
IN CONCLUSION
The sovereignty and territorial integrity of the federal republic of Somalia doesn’t apply to the
republic of Somaliland because only the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Somali republic
did and that ceased to exist officially the moment Somalia dissolved and nullified the union by
unilaterally adoptng the new federal constitution and so Somaliland by default went back to its
former status as a sovereign state.
