The Field Bros shop belonged to my Grand Father and his brothers. Awesome video, Thanks for posting.
Dear John,
Thank you for letting us know about your family connection to The Field Bros shop in Godalming. We would love to hear more about your family’s wartime experience running this shop! Please email us at surreyinthegreatwar@surreycc.gov.uk - and do visit our project website to see what other Godalming (and wider Surrey stories) we have shared: www.surreyinthegreatwar.org.uk.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Wow i bet you are happy to see this!
Wow...how cool is that ! 😁great footage ...very rare.
I am fascinated seeing these images so old, it gives that feeling of nostalgia and the reminder of how ephemeral we are!😐
These people could hardly have imagined that 100 years later other people around the world would be seeing them on magical and glowing gadgets on a platform called UA-cam!🙂
This clip filled my heart with much joy, how I wish I could step into those days of old.

Fascinating to watch. It's like a different world. I wonder what they would think if they could see the UK today.
They would be horrified. Both my grandfathers and six great-uncles fought in WWI. My father and three uncles fought in WWII. I am glad none of them are alive today to see the cess pit that the UK has become.
How did we slip from this charming society to today’s tripe

Shops just look so much more interesting than today!
This was lovely to watch. An insight into my father's early childhood days. So interesting. Hard times for the poor though. Thank you for uploading, I loved it.
I was born about a mile from there.
I lived in Guildford and studied at the university and visited Godalming in 1991 . A beautiful town.
Lived in Godalming from age 10 to 20 now, childhood home and I can never let it go haha, very lovely area
Thanks for the post. Very interesting indeed.
Thank you for this wonderful gift. EC !!!
Man, I’d do anything to be a hatter back then. 🎩
All of my future generations would be financially set for life!
What amazing film . Thank you
Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother all walked down these streets in 1922. Grandmother was still in Ireland, starving and cold guarding the still from the Black and Tans in the war of "Independence".
Fascinating. Thank you for sharing.
Love these
I used to drive buses through Godalming when I worked for Alder Valley based at Hindhead. I could not see the company name on the bus in the film or where it was going - only that it was a Number 22. I wondered if it might be a bus belonging to Alder Valley's predecessor; the Aldershot and District Traction Company. HO is a Hampshire registration.
Incredible 98yrs ago lolx
Fantastic posting
That's amazing!
When England was English. Awesome.
Try a DNA test to see how English you really are.

Not a black face in sight wonderful
Why wonderful? Racist obviously, but also cowardly, hiding behind an innocuous post. You are to be pitied more than anything else.
Lucky people living in much better times.
Talking through your ass.
@@Del-yv1qy I would give up every luxury and bit of technology to go back to much "cleaner" times. The world today is a total shit hole of a mess. I pity future generations. Also there were no sillly bastard "Woke" people back then. As I say MUCH better times.
@@philipwhatcott997 4 or so years after WW1 and 17 or so years prior to ww2. Even ignoring the impact Great Depression in the US (1929?) Might of had on the UK these times were certainly not better for the ordinary man or women (less good access to education, opportunities to start a business, NHS etc.)
Be careful what you wish for.
The sun then is the sun now with the same earth, moon, and the whole universe. The universe will remain forever, let's go!
No masks in those days. Lovely vid thank you. Goldalming looks nice.
But lots of other nasty sickness with no cures .
@@Del-yv1qy True
Only because the Spanish Flu pandemic had ended a mere 2-years earlier perhaps? If this had been shot in 1919, it may have looked very similar to today!
@@Del-yv1qy my grandad died in 1935 aged 34 yrs from T B, and my gran was left with 6 kids to bring up alone. My mum was 5 yrs old. She was the apple of her father's eye. I have never seen a picture of him.
My great grand father was born in Godalming lord onslow he had a Manor there
At 2:40- no problem smoking upstairs on the bus back then, it didn't have a ROOF! (Although sitting behind a guy who was smoking a pipe could be risky, as the sparks from this could blow into your eyes!)
I wonder if the pepperpot was there at this time?
Thanks for your comment. There is a timeline on the Godalming Museum website and this states that the Pepperpot was built in 1814:

They all still alive today
Don't be silly
Sadly all have gone

How the WORLD has changed
Funny how the world wasn't in color back then. ;)
Colour was not invented for another 30 years , when there was a mighty explosion at Arkwrights paint factory in Manchester and their black and white paints became mixed up and the rest is history as they say .
@@samsum3738 Haha. Nice explanation.
It was a monochrome world with no sex before marriage and everyone ate tripe. But there was plenty of warm beer and you could leave your door open.
rather like watching a Merchant Ivory Production in B&W
England must have been wonderful before motor cars became commonplace. All you needed was a cycle.

Not so much a "silent film" thanks to TINNITUS! 😂
Lung cancer for all these guys, and they didn’t know what all that smoking would do to them.
Too many rich , braying blow in's now. Godalming locals are in the minority

A rubbish crap time. No iPhone, no tablets, no HD TV with 4K. 🤣
There were No iphone but there were pure beauty , no tablets and games and pubg but were real men and real war.. no hd tv with 4k but were pure nature and water and pure food
What do we have now partners, and a Horrible society with people on their mobile phones asking if they should buy half a pound of sprouts in a supermarket
@@Saqibkhanwrites And lots of suffering and filth...........read your history and stop dreaming.
@@Saqibkhanwrites Umm, not so much with the pure food. The industry back then was pretty unregulated and lost of dangers stuff was in what they produced sadly.
