- Woodworking needs a smoother, and wooden ones are cheap to pick up on auction sites. Here I'm cleaning up and tuning an eBay find that has now been one of my go to smoothers for the past decade!

Nicely tuned plane Mitch.
Takes a bit of patience to fettle the wedge on the worn plane body.
I have a few that I spent the time on. They feel good in the hand.

Great result, surprised that you repaired and not replaced the wedge.
Hard to fake the patina on a new one, and harder to toss the old one in the fire 😆

Interesting video Mitch, I have a few and some need this fix or different types of fixes. I have lots of spare beech laying around I will have to give this a go cheers.

Mitch : I have a smoothing plane same style but no iron sole? Why ?
The iron sole is one way of adjusting the mouth, which should usually be small for smoothing strokes.
All wood, smothers, either have a wooden wedge or a let-in piece to close up a wide mouth.
As the sole wears away, the mouth automatically gets wider.
@@mitchwoodwork !!?? Could you show a photo of that ? Not sure I understand : I have a wooden wedge to block the blade but that’s it . Let-in-piece …?
10:40 Mitch : I have exactly the same situation (well it looks like ) . Mine shatters (vibrates) terribly when i am using it:(
I don’t see why cutting the extensions makes a difference ??
Chatter occurs due to weak or unsupported structures that resonate when the blade is cutting. Most notable is when the blade is poorly supported close to the cutting edge. But any vibration should be dealt with, and these unsupported 'finger tips' of the wedge are a case in point.
@@mitchwoodwork you mean that the long none touching hears could add vibrations?
If they resonate at the frequency of an existing vibration, then they could amplify it, I believe
