The fact that we have to do experiments to figure out how things work instead of just having the transparency is crazy. I understand they don't want people "gaming" the system, but ranked is largely a black box right now, which makes it far less enjoyable and motivating to try and progress
if it's possible to "game" something, then they have to change something. I don't know of a single ranked game that doesn't show you your progress. And the only things that I could game during a tourney is making my support score artificially higher. I don't see what else I could really do other than trying to win.
@@daltl3716 CS:GO didn't show your progress for over a decade. It's just an Elo system, it's actually not that mysterious how it works.
Skill issue honestly. As long as you play well you rank up and I’ve enjoyed ranked so much more this season than the last. People like you are solo ques who don’t know when to team wiped or allow yourself to b team wiped. In other words you don’t know how to play the game.

1. I solo queued to plat 2 last season with the exception of some games in the beginning and middle of the season. Only reason I didn't hit diamond was because I took a break.
2. It has nothing to do with knowing or not knowing how to play the game; it's about having transparency in the ranking system like basically every other competitive shooter out there. I don't want to have to _guess_ on the things that will make me progress faster or slower, I want a transparent system that makes very clear that the things I'm doing are good or bad. An arrow indicator and basically no information on what affects that are essentially meaningless, especially when the outcomes tend to vary even if you're winning.
But you're right, it's a "skill issue." Must be a "skill issue" for the rest of the community that has complained about it also. Would love for you to elaborate on the correlation between skill level and wanting transparency. I'm sure it will be enlightening

I’m in gold. 2 games IN A ROW, it gave me one bronze and one silver teammate. EVERYONE else in the lobby was either gold or plat. I don’t think it’s fixed
thanks for all that work you put into this! I like the new system but what kinda bothers me is the matchmaking. As a gold player you often end up with plats and even diamond players and sometimes those are diamond 3 stacks. Even if this was fair somehow it changes the way people are playing a round because they tend to avoid the higher ranked teams just because of their status and decide to rather third party the other cash making it even easier for the higher ranked players to win
This is a good point that I've noticed people making. Maybe I'm hallucinating, but at the start of season 2, I thought I saw the badges only at the point the tournament was over for my team. At a minimum, it seems like Embark should revert back to that.
I’m plat 3 now and can kind of handle diamond players now but when I was gold and couldn’t I had to play like a rat. Even though my teammates and I didn’t get a lot of eliminations just causing chaos and disruptions would win. The secret Strat is that the last cash out is the only one that matters. Go for teamwipes early and get those vaults opened but don’t worry about gettting the first few cash outs if it’s too much. The worst then you can do is all get teamwiped so if you’re losing a cash out just bail rotate to the next vault and try again until the final cash box. Usualy the two two teams are just hanging out on the others side of the map cause they won so you don’t have to fight as many teams and people are making desperate plays so easy picks
Tbf ranks are barely an indicator of actual skill, its just a time sink.

Something to consider for the large disparity between D4 and D3 is that while I agree the gap between the two ranks is probably large, there are probably a decent amount of players that once they hit diamond, and got their reward, they stop playing ranked all together or take it less serious.
This seasons system definitely seems better but the lack of transparency is what is frustrating for sure. Maybe they could show you your Fame Points (FP) gained or loss throughout the whole tourney after it's concluded. And give you a break down at the summary screen of how much you gained/lost in each round. Just a thought. Thanks again, great video!
Yea I’ve gotten multiple comments saying that could be the reason why the difference between D4 and D3 is so large. It wasn’t something was considering at the time. Thanks!

I'm currently Plat 1 (just get it) and it was like a hell out to way to up rank from Plat 2 to Plat 1.
The interesting thing that, I've been playing all the time with the same team, and we are always in a Stack, soo by the rank me and my friend are moving equal, like we always got the rank up at the same time - but like it's definatly not the game scores cause like - in the game I'm heavy, I'm barely kill someone and he is medium and he made more kills. So it look like place in the round really matter - not the whole tournament?? idk really - cause like we had many games 2place in the 4th round and like fck this - and the cheaters...

Ive been noting my leaderboard ranks for me and friends and I think it might be the best way to kinda gauge how close you are to a specific rank, as soon as me and my friend passed the 18k mark we entered plat 3 and then 12k for plat 2.

Guessing lots of people have said this in the comments already, but at a minimum, just show any arrow changes after EACH round not just at the end of a tournament (if your hypothesis is correct, and it seems like it has to be). Damn, I think that would address most of people's confusion about the arrows, at least. ******** Separately, about you being stuck at D2 all week despite all those good results, do you think Embark could be using percentiles to determine ranking cutoffs? For instance, let's assume the ranked population stays the same (e.g., at 20,000), then allocating 0.5% of the spots to D1 (e.g., 100 spots) would mean that moving up from D2 to D1 might not just require lots of wins to move up but also people above you in the rankings to have enough losses to move down. Too bad that seems like a much more difficult thing to determine with experiments and the like, or is it not actually based on VODs that are out there, etc.? **********Finally, based on your conclusions, one interesting implication seems to be that it might change your calculations around just playing to make top 2 in earlier rounds to maybe taking a bit more risk but going for finishing in first. You're the macro guy, so would be curious to know where you might fall on this question.
It might be the case that D1 is percentile based but that would just sort of make the arrow system even more confusing to players. I do think the earlier round arrow changes are dependent on placement but idk what changes it does to your consistency score.
You have probably already been told about this but... A lot of people are grinding to diamond 4 for the fcar skin (I'm one of them) so when I reach that rank I'll probably sit back and relax on quickcash. This is what, I would say, leads to the weird graph shape for the top 10k
The rank distribution curve imo is probably just due to people being happy with achieving diamond and not seeing a reason to push past diamond 4. Doubt diamond 4 is actually harder to work out of.

personal performance must be affecting the ranks, i played with a friend today and we played all our games together. We both started in plat 3 and i got an up rank to plat 2 in our first game, then we continued for a few hours and he got 2 up ranks to plat 1 and im still in plat 2 so it must be performance based somehow. (before today i was 1 rank above him most of the time)

Bro I'm on the diamond road, right now in Plat 2 and I'm getting EXTREMELY MAD at this ranked system it doesn't make ANY SENSE and the fact you had to make your own investigation means it is very bad and need to change asap. The only reason for me to reach diamond is the Fcar skin and after I get this I'll drop the ranked until it changes.

I am gold 1. I have been stuck regardless how many finals i win. I won 2 back to back and it gave me 3 UP twice but i didn't get promoted to plate 4 after winning back to back. I played my next match and loss in round 2 then it gave me 1 Down. So i gave up on ranked till they produced a better system to ranking points.
I've won 2 tournaments in a row and made semifinals in the 3rd match to not move in rank at all from gold 4.
Without additional data before you got those 2 tournament wins, I can't really make any assumptions. I do think you did move in rank, just not enough to rank up/down. Like in total you probably went up arrows because you only saw the arrow changes. Seems pretty likely you'll rank up if you win 1 or 2 more rounds, especially if you're gold 4.

Sadly can’t really know since the top 10,000 is all in diamond so can’t really tell how close you are without being a diamond player
So how exactly my plat3 friend gains 3 arrows up when plat4 me gets 2? That's the main thing i don't get about the this system. IF the individual perfomance doesn't matter which was very close between us. And we only play together

Hey so I really hope you see this but my question is that I’m on the border of plat 1 and diamond 4 I was 5,936 on the leaderboard and was in a game with 2 other golds while I was diamond 4 we placed second up until knockout round 3 and I fell to plat 1 with 3 arrows so do I need to win games to get up arrows or just get to the final round ?
Ideally, you want to get 1st place in every round, since that gives the most elo. If you’re in Diamond any knockout in Round 3 or below will lower elo more than what you gain in the earlier rounds. You should be able to keep diamond by getting to the final round but if you want to get diamond 1 you have to consistently win final rounds.

Me and my friend was first place in a ranked tournamant and we got three up. After that we only got qualified for tge secomd round wich we losed an after that we only had 1arrow up 18:53
Also it’s interesting that you think this rank system is harder than last seasons. Last season I got trapped at gold 1. And this season I hit plat 1 easily so far. I’ve also had times where I loose first round like 7 games in a row and never demote. I didn’t even know it’s possible to demote

Can someone help me out here, myself and two other guys ( plat 1 ) all of us, were playing 3 Diamond players, lost in the finals, & one of the guys we were playing with moved to Diamond 4.
All the mean while, last night I won two games back to back ( still in plat 1) . Nothing changed. My arrows never moved from 3 arrows up.
I’m beyond confused. Idk how else to get to Diamond 4 or unsure what I need to do. I’ve been consistently getting to the finals, lose but have been consistently winning games. I’m frustrated
I don't think winning 2 tournaments back to back will guarantee a rank up, but if you are consistently winning rounds up to the final round, you should eventually hit diamond 4. Diamond 3 or above will require you to win tournaments in order to rank up. Keep in mind, 1st place finishes in each round will give more arrows.

Does the finals have a demotion protection like going from Diamond 4 to, Plat 1 ? I’m diamond 4 rn and am scared I will get booted to plat 1 if I loose a couple in row
it does have a demotion barrier but if you lose a couple, you might get booted
So why is it that when I lose in the final round I loose points overall and on the leaderboard I go down

Hey Ekazo, just wondering what your take and advice on my ranked experience might be. So some friends and I have been grinding ranked trying to get to D4, one of my friends was the same rank as me P1. Last night we had a 3rd round exit and they both got +3 arrows and the P1 player ranked up to D4, I however only received +1 and actually ended up losing places on the leaderboard pushing me away from D4. I can’t seem to make sense of the system and have stopped playing because it just seems to be a waste of time atm
I think the P1 player that ranked up was probably shown +3 arrows because he ranked up in the rounds before the round you guys lost. In reality he probably lost arrows from that last match. I think the devs want to make sure when you rank up, you are shown up arrows to prevent confusion.
Regarding your situation, did you check the leaderboard right after you lost? The in game leaderboard does not update as fast as you might think. It might be best to check the website leaderboard and even then it might not be updated immediately. Keep in mind other people might also be ranking up and beating you in leaderboard positions which might provide the experience of losing spots when in reality you are probably still climbing.
@@EkaZoko Hey man, thanks for the prompt reply! I suppose that makes sense for the arrow to depict a very positive shift as he did go up. The other player was P4 who also received +3 and went up to P3 - so that also supports your statement.
So I checked immediately after as I was curious to see how far I had progressed as my friend had hit D4 I thought perhaps I had also made good progress. However, I was after that tournament -1000ish places which just seemed like too much of a shift to be only due to other player moving past me. I checked again later that night and the next morning and it was still the same. Both in game and on the enhanced leaderboard.
@@givcxmxmg The only thing I can think of is that you ranked up to D4 in your previous rounds and then you lost which made you go down a lot more than if you were P1 (since I'm assuming diamond loses more on losses). This could have potentially put you down even lower (explaining why you went down in leaderboard) but usually the game wouldn't derank you that easily (due to the derank shield) but in the case of a tournament match the game probably doesn't give you the shield because you never technically saw/experienced ranking up to D4.
Also, usually when you receive +1 on a loss (especially on high elo such as P1), that usually is an indicator that you ranked up in the middle of the tournament, but lost that rank because you lost that round. I say its usually an indicator because the game doesn't usually give up arrows for losing rounds and the game doesn't want to show that you ranked up and deranked, so for simplicity they just default to a +1.

Anyone know the threshold when a plat will rank up to diamond? I’ve been checking leaderboards and I’m in the top 7500 and I’ve been Plat 1 for awhile now.
You can maybe look at the enhanced leaderboard and find out what leaderboard position correlates to what rank, but its uncertain if thats how the rank system works (at least for anything below D1)

Thats the diamond effect. They’ve made it extremely difficult to push for diamond 1-2. If you consistently win 3 rounds, you are high plat level. If you consistently win entire tournaments, you are diamond level. Diamond 1 if you always win.

New update should address some cheater problems, but NA is probably the region with least cheats so I can't super relate.
I deranked from D3 to D4 off of a 3rd round loss, so idk what to even think because I feel like I'm being punished for not playing perfect and winning every single game :/

Yea it feels that way, but it seems intentional that the devs are sort of pushing the idea that D3 and above can only stay D3 and above if they pass the 3rd Round

@shusakudake I honestly think that is unfair and will create a tired/exhausted player base. There is too much rng with teams that monkey and play tdm. I can do everything right, but because teams decide to nonstop push my cash out, I'll lose. 1v1 team fights and I'm straight. I even win against gigz and other high level teams when it is 1v1, but they can't expect everything to go my way all of the time. Especially as a Light player. I'd say I get to 3rd round and finals way more than not, but I've seen 0 progress in 2 weeks (other than deranking on a 3rd round loss)

Second question, if I drop back into plat 1, will I lose the reward for diamond ? Do I need to be actively in Diamond to acquire the season reward for diamond?
If you hit Diamond 4, you will stay in diamond 4 until you start losing again. Once you’ve hit diamond, you will receive the diamond skin no matter your rank at the end of the season. Not sure how you can see your elo drop (I assume you mean you see other people climbing above you on the leaderboards) since i’m pretty sure elo is invisible.

I played solo in my placement and got bronze 3. Then reached silver 4 and played with a couple of friends and when their placements were completed they were silver 1 and i was silver 3.....didn't make since at all
Why does it matter that you played with your friends as a silver 4? From my understanding, your rank and teammates rank don't matter in the ranking system. What matters is whether you win/qualify in the rounds. Your friends probably won more rounds than you did when you solo q'd, thus why they have a higher placement.

Probably depends on whether you get 3rd/4th place, but the round number doesn't seem to matter in arrow changes. Also depends on how consistently you are getting knocked out/winning etc.

First off, great video! and thank you for this. However...
I am not so sure about your finding that the up/down arrows only apply to the last round you play. Two days ago I dropped 100 spots on the leaderboard after making it to The Finals and losing (aka 2nd place out of 16 teams!) and receiving 3 down arrows. I should only travel up the leaderboards for this- it's a positive tournament where we performed well and should be rewarded. If what you're saying is true, the only explanation would be that the 100 people I dropped behind simultaneously won a tournament during the same time frame. This can't be true.
Diamond 3 btw. I have been punished WAY too much for random 1st or 2nd round exits. It seems like I have to win 3 consecutive tournaments to overcome a 1st or 2nd round knockout. That is not okay. By that math, if I play 12 tournaments in a day, win 9 of them, and the other 3 are early exits.... in NO WORLD should that result in not gaining rank. Winning tournaments is hard.
Keep in mind, out of the 16 teams, you realistically only went against only 10 of them because other teams are eliminated other teams, not your team specifically. You "should" travel up the leaderboards for beating these 9 teams, but technically you already did travel up the leaderboards for doing just that. You've proven you can beat those amount of teams consistently and thats why you are Diamond 3. The hard part is consistently winning almost every tournament in order to get to Diamond 1. The game won't reward you for doing the same you've always done. By this time in the season in Season 1, there were already thousands of players in Diamond 1, this season its just super hard to do the same.
Also, you suggest that round based arrows can't be true because you can't travel hundreds of spots for a single round. Think of it this way, if a person wins every round for 10 rounds, should they get only 10 leaderboard positions per round won? No, they've consistently proven they can win rounds, they should get even more leaderboard positions per consecutive win. Using this same logic, after each round, people are constantly changing leaderboard positions and these changes are super varied. A person that was 300 spots below you could get to your position very quickly if they start winning a whole bunch and consistently. Embark themselves have stated that you can derank/rank up entire tiers (ex. gold 4 to plat 4). I'm not saying this is the case, but it does seem like the ranking system is based per round and has a consistency multiplier.
@@EkaZoko man I’m just pretty convinced some weird shit is happening because I have a friend that I played 2 tournaments with earlier and he’s higher on the leaderboards than I am and after our 2 tournaments (which consisted of 1 tournament win and 1 first round exit), he climbed about 40 spots on the leaderboards and hit Diamond 2, meanwhile I dropped about 70 spots… this mathematically does not make sense. We played these tournaments together. How can he climb and I fall?
Over the last 2 days I have played 15 tournaments and won 9 of them and I sit in the exact same spot on the leaderboards. This is crazy to me.
@@_EvoLv3 idk tbh, it could be a lot of factors. The game knows you usually win tournaments so you getting a 1st round exit really demotes you a lot or maybe you've lost the last whatever rounds and it thinks you need a lower rank. Maybe you're just at that point where winning 9 out of 15 tournaments isn't enough to go up. I'm not sure if I said this in this thread but, the game won't promote you for just winning some tournaments. You have to keep winning and stay winning to go up, you can't decide to throw some tournaments and expect to see gains with no consistent good performance. Your friend probably won a whole bunch before he played with you and that 1 tournament win sent him up even more while that 1st round exit didn't do as much because it wasn't a consistent underperformance.
I myself demoted today from D1 after 3 round losses and got back up after a couple back to back tournament wins. I'm sure mathematically it adds up, we just don't know exactly what the math is. I assume its (base win/lose points x consistency multiplier = arrow change/mmr change)
so im diamond 4 now q ing with random people on a dc server every day, so today i played with a diamond 4 and a diamond 3 and when i get 2 arrows up they get 2 arrows down (we got knockout in round 3). the other match we made it to the finals and lost that i got 3 arrows up and both of them 2 arrows down. my personal experience is that i always get arrows up. if i get knockout of round 2 i get 1 arrow up in round 3 i get 2 arrows up and in the finals i always get 3 arrows up no matter if we win or not, the only time i get 1 arrow down is when i get knockout in round 1 (i always only get 1 arrow down for that)
and round placements doesnt matter as well i always get 1 up for round 2, 2 up for round 3 and 3 arrows up for the finals no matter if we win or not

@@EkaZoko i didnt count it and also dont know what my streak was but out of my last 10 matches i was like 8times in the finals and won 5 of them, i had a pretty good streak the last couple of days i got from gold 1 to diamond 4 in 3 days and i got into the finals most of the time, but even before that i got the same amount of arrows up or down at least for me that system didnt change. i got ranked in silver 2 or something like that and since then i always get the same amount of arrows up/down just like i said in the first two comments 1 arrow up for round 2, 2 arrows up for round 3 etc.
and since i played with someone who was the same rank as me but still got 2 arrows down for second place in the final round while i got 3 arrows up the only thing that comes into my mind is a hidden mmr system like r6 or apex uses them. and thats where the rank on your display is only there for “cosmetic” reasons while there is a real hidden mmr, i would recommend you to watch a video on the r6 ranked2.0 system to get a better understanding of it but basically it says that when you reach your hidden mmr ingame you gain less elo and lose more so you stay on that hidden mmr but until youve reached it you will gain more and lose less therefore you are able to reach your hidden mmr
also your matchmaking is based of that hidden mmr aswell so you possibly can be in bronze while getting matched against diamonds because you guys have the same hidden mmr at least thats what also happened to me when i got ranked into silver i was facing diamonds only when i solo q’ed

I never get the same ups and downs as my teammates
One teammate is p3 and one p1 and I'm p2
Most of the time i get 1 more up even though I don't have more kills (I do focus on cashouts)
When they get one down , I get 1 Up
Them 2 Down , I 1 Down
Them 2 Up , I 3 Up
my counter argument for this would be that the consistency score or the consistency between you and your teammates is different. Your teammates might usually win rounds in games when they aren't playing with you so the game might give them more or less arrows than you even though you are similar rank.

EVERYONE in the lobby should be 5 number ranks AT MOST (less would be better) apart. Only wins/loss should affect ranking. It’s possible to play a fantastic game with like 2 kills and 10 deaths, the objective is the only thing that should matter. All games should follow rocket league’s ranked system

On the official THE FINALS youtube channel there is a video about the season 2 rank rework in which Oscar stated that the only thing that affects your rank is the outcome of the tournament. @@myztklk3v

Started a session with a full 3 stack of plat 3s, played a few hours, got a few wins. For our performance, all 3 players were consistantly Top, Middle and Bottom of the team board (combat and support scores) the Top and Bottom friend both ranked up together, plat 2 then plat 1. The Middle friend (me) stayed plat 3 the entire time......... Explain plz??? "SKiLl ISsUe" doesn't really explain it. The Bottom guy went from plat 3 to 1.
A lot of different things could be happening here. If you guys don’t usually play together and you happen to be on a lose streak before you guys play together then that might be why. It also might depend hidden elo (game might think you deserve a lower rank). From my experience, personal performance doesn’t really matter.

Wild. I'm gold 2 and I typically get sliver and golds. I'm in NA though.
I know they had to quickly add the arrows after S2 release, but I wish they had waited, as this is arguably a horrible design choice showing only the last round. They should've done 12 arrow slots total (4x3 arrows per round) and then if someone places first place on round1, then they get 3 arrows, and if they keep this up until final round, but then if they lose and get -1 arrow, the total would show 8 arrows up (3+3+3-1) of 12, instead of -1 confusing most people.
If they add 12 arrows on each side that's confusing as hell. I would make it clear what the arrows mean in the discord at the very least(iiw embark)

Season 2 Sucks - too many LOST points, how to progress???? I stuck at Platinum 1 for 10 days already I play 5-6 hours per day. wtf .... up/down up/down ... Win a bit good, then lose lose lose ... hell Annoying ... must be a PRO or cheater to progress D4 and higher... Season 1 was CLEAR and better. Smooth.
