In our last video, we talked about installing a unowix Lithium Battery in my friend Tyler’s Little Guy Max. During the installation, I noticed that the power center which also contained an integrated converter was not lithium-compatible. The model that came stock in the camper was model 8735 P. I reached out to my friends at WFCO because the informational pamphlet I found online showed that this converter did have a maximum charge rate of 14.4 volts. So I wasn’t sure if it was compatible with Lithium or not. They stated that it was not designed to work with Lithium batteries and would not charge them fully. As I previously said, standard converters will work with Lithium batteries, but they will not charge them fully.
WFCO generously sent me a converter for this project. On the outside, it looks exactly the same as the original one. However, this is the model WF-8735-AD which has the auto detect functionality. It will automatically detect whether the battery attached is lithium or lead acid. This is the same technology that is built into the beast of a converter that I recently put into our fifth wheel. I mentioned before that I didn’t really see the utility in auto-detect myself, however during this install Tyler asked me if he ever made the choice to put the lead acid battery back in his camper. Initially, I told him that we would have to change the converter back, but then I remembered that it does have the autodetect feature and it would match the charging voltage for the lead acid battery. That being said, he’s not got to stretch the legs on this lithium battery yet… once he does, I don’t think he’ll worry about that one again.

Great detail Barrett , when we switched out panels in our last trailer we did the same upgrade. We opted to go wire to wire from old to new to allow for proper setup. For us it took a bit of extra time, but we didn't have all the labeling. We are actually upgrading our current Rockwood trailer to this auto detect system as our first lithium charger from WCFO was trash.

Another interesting video. I recently changed the WFCO 8955 converter in our Grey Wolf to a lithium capable model. I chose to get the one that has a lead acid/lithium switch instead of auto detect. I just just wanted to make sure it was set for the correct type of battery without wondering if it properly detected and switched.

I have a LGM and I've been thinking about upgrading to Li-on batteries, but just didn't know whether it was possible and what the process exactly involves. I really like your videos. they clarify a lot of things for me,... but I have to say I'm still not knowledgeable enough to do the job myself. I can't wait to watch your upcoming videos on the remaining mods to be made to your friend's LGM. Fantastic videos! Keep it up.

I upgraded to this one which I do like a lot better but I think it mainly because it bigger wire to the batteries and I mounted it in the front. RV Converter Upgrade- WFCO 65 AMP

I’d probably think about moving the batteries to the rear storage compartment under the kitchen cabinet
