I would present maggots along with either hemp or trout pellets in a large feeder. The hook length would be again a long one attached the a size 8 Drennan Super Specialist hook, tied on with a 5 grinner knot. On the hook use either double or even treble maggot. Most species of fish will take the maggots so they are not the best bait to use if you want to be selective

I found 5 Barbel on the Nene yeaterday, spent a nerve wracking 30 mins of them taking and then spitting out my bread. I need to learn to make my own hair-rigs, because commercial ones just aren’t long enough for two 8mm pellets.
I am saddened that there’s many of us trying to fight the huge amount of plastic pollution and micro-plastics that the fish are eating, but so many anglers happily snip their knots and spare line and leave it on the bank. I suppose it doesn’t even register that they’ve done something bad for their own sport.

I tried Merlin braid and found it frays too easily, almost falls apart when trying to hair rig it, really awful stuff.

Super specialists are great hooks. No need to pay silly prices like most barbel anglers do.

Couldn't agree more.
Fantastic hooks.
Let me tell you why i use them.
I was once a dyed in the wool super spade fanatic. One day, i had a cracking Barbel that had my super spade embedded.
I had murders getting that hook out, which, in the end i did.
I debarbed a super specialist and i have had no problems or guilt since.
I love them.
