- Speaking from South Africa on the occasion of her 21st birthday in 1947, Princess Elizabeth dedicates herself to the service of the Empire and calls upon its young people to support her in the endeavour.
It was during this speech that Elizabeth made the famous declaration: "I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong."

She had to make huge, unpopular at times decisions, and take the brunt of the consequences. She was about duty, not living the "lifestyle."

I, wonder how crazy it would be to go back in time and tell that 21 year old just how massive that vow would be? At 21 no one could imagine a 70 year reign on the throne, the amount of world leaders, empires, countries, and, citizens of the world that come and gone during her time. It gives this American goosebumps thinking about it. All Hail the Queen.
It's truly incredible to see this young 21 year old girl make such a grand promise, bigger than herself, humble but brave and then with God's help keep her word till her very last breath. What an inspiration ♡

with my 21st birthday soon approaching, i find this utterly remarkable. at just 21, she was so well-spoken, and she stuck by those vows the rest of her life too. at this age of desires over duty and constant complaining, I hope to put my comfort aside and do what needs to be done to be successful. the queen's commitment to her duty is brilliant example to follow.
