If you slow it down to 0.25 % speed the notes aren't really...correct. It vaguely resembles Donna Lee but the actual melody is lost. But still, regardless I sure as heck would never be able to play this on trombone. Just playing it at 180bpm on bass is hard enough...So good job 👍
A little math here: 422 beats (quarter notes) per minute divided by 60 (seconds) gives roughly 7 beats per second - that's one and a half bars per second. For comparison: the low B string on a five-string bass oscillates at 30.9 Hz (Cycles per second) - which many HiFi Speakers fail to reproduce accurately due to mass inertia. The head of 'Donna Lee" consists of mostly 1/8 notes with some 1/8 triplets and a few 1/16 notes. So we're talking 14, 21 and 28 notes per second. That leaves the Bass-string or the speaker's membrane a wee bit more than one full cycle if a low B were played at 422 BPM. A Bass Instrument (as which a trombone can be seen in this context) needs significantly more than one full cycle to establish a properly tuned tone. That's due to mass inertia again. So playing at that speed is pure nonsense, if more than a display of technical (as opposed to musical) capability is intended.
Zachary Lewis That horn was a prototype of the New Orleans model BAC. Unfortunately, the instrument wasn't well made, and I've since discontinued my association with BAC. I now play Shires trombones and sound better than ever!
Ron is amazing, pure talent! I have heard him play slow, insanely fast, classical and anything else with the trombone and there is to play, no one compares to him.
It's easier to feel the pulse based on the downbeats instead of offbeats at that fast a tempo. Also, the swing feel at that tempo doesn't work as well. Thanks!
@@RonTheTrombocalist i almost always feel jazz on the 2 and 4. Even fast bop at that speed. Its litke clapping on the 1 and 3, u start to lose the groove
@@johnsontrimble7881 As much as I appreciate where you're coming from, to play at extremely fast tempos you really need to lock in on downbeats. If you listen to great Bebop players like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie playing tunes at quarter note=300+, you'll find the swing (2 & 4) is implied moreso by the rhythm section than the soloist (unless the player uses some half-time swing rhythms in their improv). With that also said, I appreciate you focusing on a key element that makes Jazz music unique-Swing. I tried to imp[ly it on this particular tune, even with playing it at such a crazy fast tempo. Thanks for asking!
I'm simply sayin that in order to really get an idea of trying to transfer swing feel on a piece of music, much less solo, at that tempo is challenging. If you try it, I believe you'll see what I mean. No shade, bruh@@johnsontrimble7881
now, I have to say, that was pretty damn impressive. a little constructive criticism, tho....I think if you find a speed that really jams, one that both shows off your technical proficiency and still swings, you would be alot closer to Watrous' style.
Call total baloney on this. There is no accuracy here. Proof would be a quality recording slowed down to half or quarter speed which clearly has the correct pitches. This doesn't have any of that. No proof and no pudding.
Because at this high speed the instrument itself can't catch up, never fully articulates a single note, it just produces mash - regardless of the player's technical or rhythmical skill.
we need this guy on the giant steps speedrun NOW
I cried a little bit

lol put on half speed and heard all missed notes
Looksik here fr
lmaooo so true
me too - that ain't Donna Lee..
Well I wouldn't say every note was missed, but definitely not fully there and beyond anything musical :O
while true, ron wilkins is a pretty killer jazz trombonist in this time, it sounds somewhat close at the 422 speed which is somewhat impressive

This has to be the most intense I’ve ever heard a trombone before
I don't even understand this tempo
all I know is I'm impressed
Half-speed shows about a 30% accuracy on the melody lol
Holy.....! up until 0:29 I was absolutely sure this will be some kind of joke...amazing playing!
greatest feat of mankind
$100 to anyone who can accurately transcribe this...and then play it back.
Simple, just google the lead sheet!
@@pjm4w Pretty sure he's saying that because a lot of the notes don't come out to what they're supposed to be.
Yes I realize this was 8 years ago.
Not quite my tempo
Munch, munch, delicious crunch But was he rushing or dragging?
Outrageous! Yeah. I dig it.

Sounds cool when you set the playback to 2x.
Play it at 0.25 speed😢

its beautiful
Damn that's absurd. Greatness!
Yo he killin it
Just such exciting stuff…. Oops I meant soporific
Hey Ron, great stuff! Wondering if that's the BAC Elliot Mason artist series horn you're playing on there?

Thanks for that info, appreciate your honesty!

You are awesome Mr.Wilkins...

Never disappoints me !
But why though? There’s no reason other than to impress; you’re leaving out the express.
Erik Perez, the best answer I can give you is.....”Why Not!” I did it for fun, just to see if I could. You dig?
all, bow to RON!
Wow! It's amazing! Ron, best speed player!!!
🐐
You can play it slowly, you can play it quickly.
you won dude
HOLY SHIT😹😹😹

Why would u make the metronome count 1 and 3?
