- As an American I am a big fan of sports, but for the most part I only know about the famous American sports figures. Marit Bjørgen is the most decorated winter olympian regardless of winter sports ever.
The top 4 best winter athletes in the Olympic games are all Norwegians.

Norway have had so many fabulous athletes that not being world number one disqualifies yoy from this list. Sorry, doesnt matter what sport you are number 3 og more , you cannot compare that to i.e. 10 world gold medals in an olympic sport.
karsten warholm deserves his spot, he changed 400m hurdling.
Starting in july 2021, he first took down a 29 yr old standing wr, only to obliterate it by over 3/4 of a second one month later
He have the world record on 400 m.hurdel 45.94 s.
Norway dominate the winter Olympics. They have a total of 405 medals (148 gold), whilst USA who are in 2nd place have 330 total (113 gold). Pretty incredible when you think about the difference in size of both land and population.
The norwegian are born with ski on their feets.
Casper Ruud should definitely be in there. Tennis player currently ranked 4th in the world. He was ranked 2nd in the world a few weeks ago.
I think it`s worth mentioning that Grethe Waitz won the New York maraton nine times.
Mats Zuccarello played for New York Rangers from 2013 to 2019 and was one of their most popularitet players ☺️
U should probably watch a video about Northug. He revolutionized the cross-country skiing genre through his finishing ability and in general his ability to win both sprint and long distance racing at the same time.

Norway has world champions in a shitload of sports. Obviously there is winter sports in everything from Curling to anything with a ski or snowboard etc. But we have world or olympic champions in Rally/Rally cross as you saw, but also other motorsports like everything from Drifting with cars to Offshore boat racing. Then there is Chess, beach volleyball, marathon and all forms of running sports including orientation and speed walking, football (soccer), handball, under water rugby, weight lifting, Taekwon-do, wrestling (the actuel type, not the American show type), bicycling (track and road), poker, Ultimate Firefighting, Chef, Coffee burning, boxing, kickboxing, shooting, archery, figure skating, pole vault, athletics, sailing, gymnastics, rowing, sledding, paddling, casting, x-games, horseback riding, horse dressage, sports dance, disco, modern dance, jazz dance, (in fact, no other nation has more dance medals than Norway), kitesurfing... And many more strange and less strange sports, these are the ones I can mention from the top of my head...
Our former prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland once said, "it's typical norwegian to be good".
Not only that, but Karsten Warholm is also a World Campion Record holder in the Olympics.
There is so many left out, but one of my favorite is Thor Hushovd and I don't care much about road bicycle racing either 😅
but he did something amazing at tour de France 2011 that alot of people will never forget!
In 2010 he became world champion, so there was big eyes on him to do good in TdF 2011, but he struggled with sickness alot but on stage 13 he did an incredible mindblowing racing and won!
On stage 16 he won sprinting against fellow Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen! Old vs "newbie", hehe
Another guy I want to mention is Olaf Tufte, just a beast of a machine!
Even King Harald the current King of Norway competed in 3 Olympic games in sailing and King Olav his father even won an Olympic gold in sailing.

He was one of the first to change the kick from a straight line to a more "Soccer style"

Marit Bjørgen is the greatest, most winning Winter Olympic Athlete throughout history, full stop. Regardless of sport, nationality, gender, period of time, any variables whatsoever. She's #1, end of.
You should watch a highlight video of Erling Haaland scoring goals. Also, I would vote for Martin Ødegaard to be on this list. But he is also young, so maybe he belongs on a list of best athletes currently performing. He is also a football player, and captain of the team in first place right now in the English Premier League - Arsenal. Lots of Americans do watch the EPL

Haaland is younger than Ødegaard though. And Ødegaard played for the national team at age fifteen (!). He's every bit as brilliant as Haaland.

One is actually a world class midfielder and the other one is very good midfielder but not on the same level as the best midfielders in the world. Maybe he will get there one day tho.

you didnt notice that Petter was World Champion in Rallying 2003 also he is a Rallycross world champion. He is the first driver in history to be world champion in two different FIA branches. Fernando Alonso has done the same now but Petter was first :D

Norway have had many great sailors, including several Olympic gold medal winers. Former king Olav 5 was Olympic champion. The present king Harald 5 is world champion.

If you count chess as a sport, then you also have the reigning world champion in chess for 10 years in a row. He’s decided not to defend his title this year. While his chess competitors are fighting for his title, he’s playing poker in the US. His name is Magnus Carlsen
I remember there was a comment somewhere like «it’s not surprising Norway is good at skiing, if they were good at beach volleyball, that wpuød be surprising» and the Norwegians were like, «yeah, we have something to tell you», because we have Moi and Sørum, and they have won all the beach volleyball 😂

When talking "of all time", Sonja Henie should definitely be on the list. One of the most famous, influential and accomplished athletes of all time.
It could be mentioned that Grete Waitz (Grete pronounced phonetically, not Griit) has a statue of her in Central Park in NY.
I also think the most impressive Norwegian stat is that with a current population of around 5 million. They hold the record for most Winter olympic medals of all time with 405 medals... Coming in 2nd is The USA with 330 (population over 300 million) 3rd: Germany with 286 (over 80 million...) and 4th with less than half the medals of Norway, Russia with a population of over 140 million... that insane !!!

She and teammate Kikkan Randall won the United States' first-ever cross-country skiing gold medal at the Winter Olympics in the team sprint in 2018.[2][3] At the 2022 Winter Olympics, Diggins won the silver medal in the 30 kilometer freestyle and the bronze medal in the individual sprint, making her the most decorated American cross-country skier of all time. She also won four medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships from 2013 to 2017 and would later become the first American to win a gold medal at the event for an individual contest in 2023. In 2021, Diggins clinched the top spot in the women's overall standings for the 2020-21 FIS Cross-Country World Cup, becoming the first American to do so.

Petter Northug lost his good reputation among the public (he was very revered and beloved by all of Norway) after he was in a car accident, where he drove drunk into a dangerous mountainside.
He left his injured passenger and friend at the scene and fled.

What about Dag Otto Lauritzen?
He joined the Army Paratroopers after his conspription period in the Army was over because it looked awesome. Then, after his time was up, he joined the police, and the 'Beredskapstroppen'(armed reactionary force) because it was difficult.
While in the police he got introduced to cycling...
Then he got called in for a big exercise in the army in 1980, and almost lost his foot during a jump from a Twin-Otter. He was told that he would have trouble walking normally, never mind ever cycling again.
The next year he became Norwegian champion in cycling.
He became the first Norwegian to win a stage on the Tour de France in 1987.
In 1992, he was leading in Tour of Norway, but on the last stage he got a flat on his rear tire. The Mechanic(from the follow car) hurried to replace the wheel, but unfortunately broke the gears. Dag Otto grabbed a regular bike someone had left beside the road. He won the race with a 20meter lead on the next cyclist. On the picture of him crossing the line you can see the handlebar bag and the fenders on the bike.
These days he run a TV show 'Company Lauritzen' where he takes mostly young adults that never got out of their parents' basement, put them in a military setting(it's even an old military camp) and push them to their limits and show them that they really can do it.
He doesn't believe in words like 'impossible'

By artists, do you mean musical artists specifically? Most Americans think of painters and sculptors when you say “artists”, but maybe that’s what you meant?
Stein Eriksen. 4 olympic gold medals alpine skiing. Famous in america. Johann Olav Koss should also be on the list. Speed skating. Several olympic gold medals.
Speaking of Norwegians in motorsports. Dennis Hauger is currently in Formula 2 with great potential. Could very well be put into an F1 car at some point if he stop being unlucky with other drivers ramming into him for no reason.

You said you missed golf and tennis. You mentioned that you knew of the golfer, Viktor Hovland. And in tennis, Casper Ruud. Both top class and still in the game.
Also footballers worth mentioning: Ada Hegerberg and Martin Ødegaard.
Handball: Cecilie Leganger, Nora Mørk, Heidi Løke and basicly the womens team overall. Lots of wc wins, olympics too.
That's really hard, but if we're talking currently active ones, I'd say (off the top of my head) Magnus Carlsen, Erling Haaland, Martin Ødegaard, Ada Hegerberg, and Casper Ruud. Yes, we have a lot of brilliant winter olympians, but Carlsen is the best chess player in history - and it is much harder to become among the best in the world in football/tennis than winter sports. Same goes for golf, when I think about it, so it's really hard to exclude Viktor Hovland and Suzann Pettersen. Number 6 and 7 right there.
I would personally put five people on the list.
1) Erling Haaland (Man city striker)
2) Magnus Carlsen (do i really mention what he does? Dosen't everyone know who he is? Well, okay then. Chess)
3) Hovland (golf)
4) Casper Ruud (tennis)
5) Ole Einar Bjørndalen
We have absolutly one of the best offshoots ski, but after my generation i have to mention Ole Einar Bjønrdalen for that one.
But no disrespect for the women in ski, they are absoutly beast.
Casper Ruud is an Norwegian Tennis player. Casper Ruud is a Norwegian tennis player from Snarøya who is ranked number three in the world on the ATP world rankings. Best ranking was No. 2 in the world. Ruud represents Snarøya Tennisklubb, and is the son of former tennis player Christian Ruud

Actually, my favorite cross-country skier is American- Jessica Diggins. She became the first American to win individual world championship gold. Also have WC and Olympic gold in Team Sprint,. You should check her out.
In alpine skiing, USA has been VERY successful - both men and women, Check out Body Miller, and especially Mikaela Shiffrin. In USA she's a superstar, and i mean A-Celeb superstar. Seen by many as the second-best skier in history, after Ingemar Stenmark
Northugs fall was that after he was arrested for driving drunk in 2014, then became world champion in 2015, he Retired in 2018, but in 2020 he was once again arrested but this time for driving and crashing with cocaine in his blood

Ive definitely heard about Jessi Diggins! Not the others but Im not an expert or anything, I know the Norwegian ones better.
