PHOTOGRAPHING MOUNTAIN HARES part 2 | Wildlife photography in Scotland - Behind the scenes vlog

  • Im back in the mountains of Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland to do wildlife photography and to enjoy nature. This is my second day and the weather has changed dramatically from the day before. The high winds with snow on the top of the mountain makes wildlife photography challenging.
Watch Wildlife photography in Scotland - behind the scenes part 1:
    • PHOTOGRAPHING MOUNTAIN...
It is very windy so I had a lot of challenges with the sound but I decided to make this short behind the scenes VLOG to share this great experience with you. So please forgive me for the poor sound - I hope you will bear with me.
In this short behind the scenes documentary I am trying to share my fascination of the animal kingdom and to show how to photograph wildlife using the foreground as a blurry element to close the bottom of the photo.
    * ABOUT THIS EPISODE
I spent some days doing wildlife photography in these mountains and this is part 2 from my trip - I am currently working on a video about the equipment I brought on this photo trip.
I think the biggest challenge was the temperatures that were around 0 degrees Celsius all the time. That in combination with the sleet made it almost impossible to keep the front element of the lens free from water and snow.
Another challenge was to actually find the hares. Some of them were very shy but I was lucky to find a few that would let me get quite close.
The Scottish mountain hare is indigenous to Scotland and even though it looks quite similar to the Arctic hare, it is quite different.

I find myself glued to your video watching you photograph a damn rabbit. I’m not even a rabbit fan. Compelling viewing. Wonderfully narrated. I’m drawn in and I’m there with you all the way, except I’m all snuggly in warm bed. Fantastic Morten 👍🏻

It's not about the equipment. Your films are just wonderful to watch. There is an issue at the moment in Scotland with Gamekeepers culling Mountain Hares & your film shows what a waste of life that is. Wonderful animals. Thanks for sharing that wonderful moment.

You are welcome, I love hiking and my partner is a photographer. We do enjoy your vlogs. I am a musician and often find inspiration in Nature to compose yet he is the "eye" behind the lens. I really don't know what is more compelling about your videos. Is it the abundant love you feel for your subjects and the honest and articulate way you express this in words - or the sumptuous images themselves? To capture as you do not just the lovely static stand alone subjects but to incorporate aspects of typical behaviour often in the context of startling light and a thrilling wider composition is quite exceptional. To say that I admire both your values and your work is a very considerable understatement. Please continue just like this. Simply beautiful.

I feel for you, the effort, cold and frustration. Then, boom!! I feel so happy and filled with joy when you succeed. I love hares and rabbits - I had a pet rabbit that thought is was a little dog, would follow me everywhere and sleep by the fire. So when I see these beautiful gentle animals surviving with antifreeze blood and so well camouflaged to escape the eagle's stare, eating tiny bits of heather, I sigh in absolute wonder. Thank you so much Morten, you are the best.

The last photos were phenomenal. Definitely add some of those to your primary portfolio! Yes, a video of your decision-making, planning for these trips especially the major expeditions would be amazing!

Scottish Snow Hares are very smart. They figured out if a photographer - Morten Hilmer - is crazy enough to crawl around in a blizzard to take their pictures then they are going to put on a real show for you. And for me, I'm glad you are a little crazy because it is a show you richly deserved for all your perseverance. There is only one thing to say about your pictures - OH MY GOD! beautiful. I also heard that Starbucks Coffee is going to build a coffee shop on the top of the mountain, just for you, so you can have your beloved coffee - which - I now think is the fuel that makes you a champion. You should create a complete line of Easter Bunny prints, greeting cards, and write a children's book illustrated with your photographs. One last thing, be careful out there. Rush L. Hi there - what a great comment to read on a nice Tuesday evening:) Just sitting on the terrasse and the beloved coffee has been replaced with a nice Scottish Ale:) Wonderful.
I hope you are having an awesome time over there in South Carolina - I am very much looking forward to sharing more adventures with you. And by the way - great idea with the prints:)

    Hey Martin
Thank you for the amazing video once again. I was in inverness Scotland taking these amazing mountain hare last month i know the feeling how hard weather can be. I straggled with one camera walking in the heavy snow but you put extra effort carrying two cameras to show us behind the scene. Thank you for bringing back the memory. Great video :) looking forward to see your upcoming videos

Your channel has been a really big inspiration to me! Must be really difficult to do all the hard work of finding the Mountain Hares and doing a vlog at the same time. Keep up the great work Morten!

mate this was awesome.... your natural ability to tell the story and remain humble makes for fantastic viewing. Sitting here in the heat of an Australian summer it is hard to imagine but gorgeous to watch. The photos are stunning dude.

Excellent, this is what nature photography is all about. To get close to your subject, for it to trust you, so you can work on getting the best images is something you have to experience to understand.
