Ssgt Nolan is now a gunny, and the second battalion drill master. That guy destroyed me on the parade deck because I screwed up a ditty once. The day of graduation, he gave a speech about how our lives were going to be beyond boot camp, how we should take pride in the EGA we earned, and about the history of our branch. It just so happened that we graduated two days before the Marine Corps birthday, so that was a treat. One of the toughest and most intense guys I’ve encountered in my entire life.
I did too until my SDI watched me. He then took me aside and had me watch him climb. He then instructed me by the numders on how to climb. After that it was easy.
This makes me wanna become a marine even more. It looks so challenging and fun. I wish I had these around. I would be practicing literally all the time.
Vidpig After boot camp, everything is just standing by to stand by. We sat in the rain for about 3 hours today before they told us to go back to the barracks and clean. I can only imagine it gets even better in the fleet. Sincerely, a 0621 field radio operator currently at MCCES in 29 Palms
IIRC, the unofficial standard was two minutes to complete the O Course. When Col. J.J. Sheehan was the CO of the 8th Marines at Camp Geiger in the late 1980s, he challenged his Marines to race him at a double running of the O course. Anyone who beat him would earn a 96 hour liberty pass. I never saw anyone beat him.
@@HarryPost-o9c Sometime in mid 1988. I was in 1/8 on Geiger in March ‘88 when we went on a Med float. When we came back in September we went to Mainside. A buddy in 1/6 was on Mainside in April’88 when he went to Oki. When he came back in October he went to Geiger.
I ran that obstacle course many times in 1965. Then one day I lost my grip and fell to the ground landing on my face. They dragged me off to Sick Bay for stitches, and I was put on light duty for a week. From that day on I have suffered neck and head aches, so I put in for disability through the VA. My application was approved and I now get $1,325 a month disability from the VA, and it's tax free.

Yeah it takes a lot to be a marine but it all pays off in the long run there will be lots of ups and downs but everytime I have those moments I just remember that its 13 long weeks I spent on that island follow your dreams and work hard!
@@AS-zl1zl thank you I enjoy everyday of it for basic training it's hard to really recommend anything because it's like anything you will ever go through but do your best to stay in shape and eat right you can learn the rank structure and general orders as well and most importantly hydrate on an additional note if you have time make sure you learn to swim because for some recruiters it is a very crucial week
When I did the O Course in boot it was not this silent. D.Is were screaming the entire time and my "Kill Hat" was doing it with us ensuring we died at some point lol.
My uncle is a marine . My uncle and I have decided that we both are going to show our family and country what we were made for. I want to me a marine too and I’m a teenager so I got a few more years left. But Im ready
I remember when I went thru, the one that I shit my pants on (i did not) but to me, since I was afraid of heights was "the stair way to heaven", that was tough.
Just a question about maintenance of the O course. Are the walls, logs and steel pipes/bars routinely replaced? Or are they the exact same logs and such when I went through back in the summer 1994?
@@elcomandantechiva That sucks dude. I want to join but I have really bad acne scars on my back and I'm afraid they will disqualify me when I go to meps.
Massive respect for the USMC. Keep it up and I’m honoured to have worked alongside you in the past.
I was born anew after that fun run! And that was 45 years ago! Semper Fidelis mates!

I always struggled with the ropes at the end of San Diego’s O Course.

I was @ Geiger in MCT and SOI in late 1990. at that time SOI and 6th Marines occupied Geiger. When was 8th Marines there and when did they leave?

I went through in the fall/winter of 94, graduated on 12 Dec.
They seem pretty old when I finished boot in November but I’m sure they do maintenance on it.
