If I could cover a GBV song I would, but I can't, so I have nothing but respect for the band, the man (Robert Pollard), and anyone with the musical sense to pay tribute any way they can. And this is a great tribute - definitely picks up the nuances of a difficult song. Thank you, Robert Pollard, for writing this music and to Ben Gibbard for his brilliant interpretation. Respect.
I've been a huge GBV fan for 25 years, and I really don't care for Death Cab For Cutie, I and I especially don't like that name -- so I was pleasantly surprised that I liked this cover because I didn't want to.....
I don't pretend I'm cool. I am cool. And he sings like a pussy and it just sounds so boring on just an acoustic guitar. He doesn't stack up to pollard at all.
'in the first place it's probably just paranoia/ but there's a ghost in my room and he says i better run' sounds like it could be a gibbard lyric haha, sounds so natural coming out of his mouth
A beautiful cover. What a great pure voice and a perfect even-handed interpretation of a great song! It's funny, when people do covers of GBV tunes there is more than a sense of melancholy that isn't always present in the original. I guess that means this is a great song when the plot twists like that. I've said it before: Bob Pollard is some kind of national treasure...Now, ''speed-UP/ slow-DOWN...''

This song is a reworking of an earlier-recorded GBV song. Robert found himself in the middle of a divorce, and he rewrote the lyrics to meet how he was feeling at the time. Came out darker and truer. I can attest. Divorce is the pits. Until it isn't any more.
I saw GBV live at the AlRosa Villa about a month before Dimebag was killed there. I can only describe it as being in the eye of a hurricane. And so lit they played the same song twice. Great fun.
@@guslima1130 GBV have a sacred simplicity about their best songs, they were consciously writing pop after all, it just happens that their lyrics and hooks are of outstanding quality
Gibbard does a great job with this song by making it his own & not trying to exactly copy GBV. (That's what really good artists do.) Ben's pitch is nearly perfect. His guitar playing clean, clear, crisp, and rhythmically spot on. It's an incredibly difficult song to play...I know...I've been trying to play it for 10 years. All the nay sayers in this thread...have a go at it...on an ACOUSTIC guitar. Then come back and tell us how you compare to Ben.
Considering that at this time, Zooey Deschanel had already left him and the song "Black Sun" was released as well, I think Ben Gibbard was relating to this song on a " little higher than normal" level. I can empathize with him.
For an incredible lead-in to this song I can’t recommend enough Atoms, Motion and the Void episode 2 The Meese and Bowl-a-Mat (this song is played during the episode). You won’t regret it.
why are the hate? If you don't like this cover then just don't say anything. If you don't like Ben or Death Cab For Cutie then don't listen to it. I Understand its your opinion but can you do better? I would be interested in listening to your version of this song. Or better yet send me a copy of your EP. Ya thats what I thought.
@Frank Howe based on what? Oh right, because you're a hardcore fan and you get him more than anyone in the world and he's your best friend and you definitely are qualified to speak for him. All the whiny fanboys need to fuck off. This is a great solo acoustic cover. What do you expect from one dude and a guitar?
Awesome cover with the song left unchanged - since it is Rock Perfection as is! 🎸 For those unaware, Bob P and GBV are one of USA's greatest rock bands ever - just after Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys. 🌝 Yes, they are that uniquely fantastic - check it out and see for yourself! Start at Propeller, Bee Thousand, and Alien 👽 Lanes! Crank it up and enjoy! GBV! GBV! GBV! 🌝🤘🤘🤘
Every serious pop artist should consider playing a GBV cover.I think Gibbard did a great job.
"Serious" lol
Pollard should be teaching The Master Class for song writing, his understanding of song structure is second to none.
I love this cover in ways I can't explain. It is DEADLY.
Thank goodness some musicians are waking up. Pollard is a musical genius.
Mark Hower - he is a Buckeye
Absolutely....GBV....The Finest Rock in the Business!! 🤘🤘🤘
Well, there's a huge catalog of songs. A few are bound to ring with a broad audience.
Hardcore (UFO's) GBV fan here - and this is a freaking great cover by Ben Gibbard. Top shelf.
Two of my favorite singer songwriters, Ben Gibbard and Robert Pollard!
I adore both bands but I'm going to throw my two cents in: I think he did an amazing job. That's just me. Give the guy a little credit.
I strongly agree. He put up a great effort. Not an easy song to play. Well executed.
Agreed!
Was anyone saying he didn’t? All the comments seem positive. I think he nailed it. And yes I know I’m responding to a decade old comment

I'm not a big fan of Death Cab in the slightest, but there's no denying that this is a masterstroke of a cover.
SAME as all hell
Agree
Beautiful and sensitive cover. I have a new appreciation for this guy.
this song is a lot sadder when you don't have windmills, power chords and a fourth grade schoolteacher with a case of a beer on stage.
are you kidding? Gibbard totally butchers it. its really boring.
Tucker Brennan Agreed. This is awful.

How did he butcher it? By playing it fairly straightforward? Quit trying to pretend you're cool by disliking everything.
I don't pretend I'm cool. I am cool.
And he sings like a pussy and it just sounds so boring on just an acoustic guitar. He doesn't stack up to pollard at all.
If I was at the bar while this guy was playing this song, I would put the fattest tip in his jar!!!
rareluck “Fattest tip” lol

simply one of the best (and saddest) songs ever written. GBV forever. Beautiful cover too.

Excellent cover of one of my favorite songs.
I'd love to see him do "Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory".
...Trail of Dead do a good GMQD cover

A whole chunk of my life wrapped up in Bee Thousand. You bet I think this is a fantastic cover!
Every GBV song is like 2:20 seconds of melodic perfection.
Pure Pop and Rock Perfection.
Fantastic cover of my favorite GBV
This is absolutely fantastic. Captures the emotion of the GBV version and sensitively makes it his own.
Hard task covering GBV. Admirable.

Cool rendition of another of Uncle Bob's classics.
Still just so PERFECT. This is how you do that!
Thank you for playing the intro! GBV omits the intro these days.
great choice for an acoustic cover. I always knew it would be.

It seemed like a weird combination but Ben's voice compliments this song so well.
best cover on anything ever
I honestly don't really love Death Cab for Cutie. But I love that song, and I love this cover of it. Really, really great.

Bob’s divorce was years after Bee Thousand came out. Isolation Drills was his “divorce album”.
This guy’s great at hitting all the vocal notes, it’s not easy.

Beautiful. Love it.
great choice for a cover. I always knew it would be, with the acoustic intro.
Anyone else die when they heard DCFC after there bright eyes love died….hearing dcfc do gbv I’m dead. Why was music so good when I was little…❤❤❤
My favorite Robert Pollard song is supernatural car lover
god dammit this song rules
Outstanding... My favorite GBV song!
The golden years of GbV.
It's not easy to cover GbV Songs
I love covers of slightly difficult songs. I would love to see a good acoustic cover of 'Beginning to see the light' by velvet underground.
Bob Pollard is just a genius on the guitar. But with the help of his guitarists makes it more challenging.
Yes and no, tbh. Some GBV songs are pretty easy to play, even keeping the original essence.
