Epica is just musical perfection. For the next reaction I suggest Epica - Design Your Universe live at Retrospect 2013, goosebump machine! Remember, let the video play out fully, there's a surprise near the end;)
They are Dutch. Symphonic metal band formed in 2002 by guitarist Mark Jansen after parting ways with his former band After Forever. He had co-founded AF, which was the 1st band Floor Jansen joined at age 16.(Mark and Floor are not related) Lead singer is Simone Simons, only 17 when they formed. She switched to this style of singing in training, from pop, after hearing Tarja with Nightwish. Coen Janssen on keyboards, guitarist Isaac Delahaye, Rob van der Loo on bass, and drummer Arien van Weesenbeek complete the current lineup. 8 albums and several EP's so far, this song is from the 4th, Design Your Universe. This Retrospect show was their 10th anniversary concert in 2013, with a full orchestra and choir. Generally heavier than Nightwish, they have some death metal and prog metal influences, including some harsh vocals from Mark. There are lots more EPICA songs to do, lol. To start, try Consign to Oblivion and Beyond the Matrix live at the Zenith in Paris. The Skeleton Key and Kingdom of Heaven part 3 at the Omega Alive virtual show. And you probably will want to see a song that Floor joined them for, Sancta Terra from this same Retrospect show.
Can't go wrong with Epica, they have put out 8 albums not a bad song in the lot. The Kingdom of heaven series is worth a good long listen, 37 min for all 3, pure art. For something shorter Consign to Oblivion ua-cam.com/video/dkqyyUTCMUQ/v-deo.html is a must. Keep up the good work!
Hello gentlemen! Welcome to the amazing world of Epica, currently the peak of symphonic metal! But be warned, Epica is heavier than Nightwish! Not everyone can handle it... People often compare them, but Epica never sounded like Nightwish, and vice versa. They are in the same metal subgenre but each have their own distinct style. Epica was founded in 2002 by guitarist Mark Jansen. The gorgeous female lead singer is Simone Simons, a classically trained soprano. She was Mark's GF at the time she joined the newly formed band. The song you reacted to is not very heavy. It has a beautiful melody and is certainly one of the best known Epica songs. This concert is from 2013, it's called Retrospect and it was the 10th anniversary of Epica, hence the live orchestra and choir on stage. Simone was about 3 months pregnant at the time, but she pulled off an amazing performance. For something heavier that will surely NOT remind you Nightwish... Epica - The Essence of Silence (Official Live) For more radio-friendly song: Epica - Storm the Sorrow (Official music video) For one of their long epic masterpieces: Epica - Kingdom of Heaven Pt3 (Omega Alive)
This was there 10 year anniversary concert (3 hours )and Simone Simons was three months pregnant here. Epica is heavier than Nightwish. They use growl too in a lots of songs as well. Because Simone often sings with operatic voice they call it often beauty and the beast. Good example would be The Essence Of Silence live Brussels Belgium. They also have beautiful ballads such like Rivers Dreamscape Feint Tides of time But also heavy songs like Universal death squad Cosign to oblivion But also influences from other cultures Code of Life Dancing in a Hurricane The band is from the Netherlands only the lead guitar player is from Belgium. P.s. you haven't heared anything yet. Welcome in the wonderful world of Epica.
Yes, Epica is often recommended to those who like Nightwish and although both of these bands generally make music in the same genre (symphonic metal), there are quite serious differences between them. You've just listened to a song that's light and poppy enough for them. They have enough of these songs, but in fact, most of their music is heavier and more complex than this song and than all Nightwish's work. Epica songs almost always feature the extreme vocals of the band's guitarist Mark Jansen, and often the extreme vocals of the second guitarist. They work in contrast, the high beautiful voice of the group's vocalist Simone and the growl of Mark, the so-called "beauty and the beast" style. And sams music often breaks down to death metal and sometimes even to black metal. At the same time, they also have a soft side - acoustic, as well as beautiful ballads. If you are ready for heavier than “unleashed” and extreme vocals, we will gladly recommend heavy hits. If not, then something from ballads or acoustic songs 😌
Welcome to Epica 🔥🔥🔥 Listen to few more songs and you’ll stop comparing them to any other band. They are more complex, more diverse, more creative and more consistent for more than 20 years. With about 15 unbelievable masterpieces and countless incredible songs they’re in a league of their own. Enjoy the ride.
Well guys EPICA is an amazing band and is beautiful Metal ❤ they have about 25 kick ass songs like this a vast amount of songs just give it time u will be hooked Next song should be Design your Universe from this show WOW 😮 U WILL GET HOOKED AND SIMONE AND HER BLUE EYES RED HAIR
Hello gentlemen, welcome to EPICA's amazing rabbit hole! They recently celebrated their 20yrs and they are, now, getting (even belatedly) the recognition that they deserve. A few days ago they were supporting METALLICA in Amsterdam and Hamburg. There will be plenty of suggestions from others but don't neglect their amazing ballads! It's almost unbelievable but they may be better than NIGHTWISH in this! Greetings from Greece, where we anxiously await NIGHTWISH next week!👍
I came to Epica through Nightwish as well. They have become my favorite band. During this 10th Anniversary concert, they had Floor as a special guest. See the songs Sancta Terra and Sabat Mater Dolorosa. So many of these Dutch bands are interconnected, as the metal scene in The Netherlands is small. For the pure power of Epica, watch The Skeleton Key or their opus, Kingdom of Heaven, Part 3 from the Omega Alive virtual concert.
Epica and Nightwish. The two best experiences you can ever have. My yin and yan 😂. Epica could be harsh, has Death and Black Metal influences, you will find out. So the diversity is huge! So if you like a ballad "Rivers" live with Apocalyptica. If you want it to be harsh "Consign to Oblivion" live from Zenith. And the 3rd must know Symphonic Metal Band is Within Temptation. "Mother Earth" live with Metropole Orchestra or "Faster" (music video) are perfect for a start 🙂
Welcome to the wonderful world of Epica. Many great suggestions already in the comments before me, but I wanted to say a little more about this concert. It was a 3 hour show, their 10th anniversary and what was wonderful about it was that it had everything from soft ballads, such as Delirium, a power ballad in Chasing the Dragon through Symphonic Metal extravaganzas like The Divine Conspiracy and Design your Universe, a ‘duet’ between the solo violin and Epica’s lead guitarist, Isaac playing Vivaldi’s Presto and a vocal duet between lead singer Simone and Floor Jansen of a 15th Century Latin hymn, Stabat Mater Dolorosa. Not too many concerts you will find that sort of broad canvas. Well worth exploring more from this show before you move onto other Epica stuff.

Do not ever apologize for pausing, it your channel, and a damn fine one at that. Anyway, awesome reaction. Literally any song by Smoon and the boys (Epica), you'll never go wrong. 👍👍
Retrospect is the 3rd live album by Dutch symphonic metal band Epica in celebration of their tenth anniversary. Because of the great demand by international fans, Epica announced a live stream, called the Retrostream, on March 4, 2013. Epica performed on stage with the same orchestra that accompanied Epica in the recording of the live album with the 70-piece Extended Hungarian Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra and the Choir of Miskolc National Theatre. Next"_*"Consign To Oblivion"*_ : ua-cam.com/video/dkqyyUTCMUQ/v-deo.html (only Epica live in Paris without the full orchestra) And/or also with the big orchestra with Simone Simon's ;ong time friend Floor Jansen .... *_"Sancta Terra"_* : ua-cam.com/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/v-deo.html
Epica is brilliant. Great reaction. And remember .... never apologize ! That's not what we do :) (And anyway Simone & Floor are best mates !) If you want something softer go for Cry for the Moon (they are very, very, very young there, Simone probably 18) And a 'bit' more heavy go for Consign to Oblivion. Cheers from tha Low Countries (just one tiny Atlantic pond away) & keep on rockin' you mad lads.
You simply needed to come it contact with this kind of music. It is extremely different to 'American heavy music'. Sonata Artica is another one, and even a group like Avantasia is different. Yet they all have choral, symphonic, rock, metal and lyrical elements in their music.
Two other songs from Epica that I would suggest: Sancta Terra (with guest vocalist Floor Jansen), Cry For The Moon (NOT about religion---it's about a priest who raped a child, and they're pissed off, and want it stopped immediately; and Consign To Oblivion (my favorite is the show from Progpower VII Festival). Another great band I strongly recommend is Visions of Atlantis. Check out A Journey to Remember, Nothing Lasts Forever, and Heroes Of The Dawn, al from their Wanderers album which in itself is very good. You might also want to check out Xandria's Nightfall, Amberian Dawn's River of Tuoni and Valkyries, both from their River of Tuoni (which, in Norse mythology, is basically the same as the River Styx in Greek mythology). And definitely don't miss Frozen Crown - suggest Battles in the Night, Far Beyond, and Far Beyond. Also check out some progressive rock stuff like old Genesis, old Styx, RUSH, and Fish era Marillion (mostly story albums) such as Script For a Jester's Tear and Clutching at Straws[1] or, the only one I really like from after Hogarth took over is Brave, but do NOT listen to it if you're feeling depressed. [1] In the song, Slainte Mhath (pronounced roughly as "slanzyne vah") Slainte Mhath is an old Scottish and Irish Gaelic toast meaning "good health" or "to your health" and is often simply just "Slainte. I brewed a strong Scotch ale called Oieche Mhath, (roughly Eyedkie Vah, which translates to "Good Sleep" ... it was about 10% ABV, so you had to respect it or end up waking up on the floor). And just for what it's worth (maybe 10 cents?), I'm the kind of 57 y/o guy that can switch between Bach, jazz (no vocals), blues, classic rock, progressive rock and symphonic metal without blinking an eye. I could go on naming even more great symphonic metal bands to check out, but I'd never finish this.
Old Metal head rock hear check out same concert Sancta Terra with Floor Jansen singing along with Simone Simons it’s epic and it will blow your mind. Epica is heavier than Nightwish but both are equally talented. Both Bands have no bad songs and in my humble opinion go off the charts live! Rock On Stay Safe!🙏🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Abyss of Time ua-cam.com/video/sTbk3SfUq9Q/v-deo.html and Beyond the Matrix ua-cam.com/video/ix_PpfputKY/v-deo.html are in heavy rotation on my playlist. I hope you would enjoy them too.
You guys would love a band called Dark Side of the Moon. They do a bunch of fantasy songs taken from movies, games, shows and books in a heavier style. Their singer Melissa Bonnie is amazing. Try Jenny of Old stones which is from Game of Thrones.
Kingdom of heaven from OmegAlive next 🔥🔥🔥
Epica - Chasing The Dragon live Retrospect !!!
With Lyrics! Always the subtitled live video 🙂
Epica is just musical perfection. For the next reaction I suggest Epica - Design Your Universe live at Retrospect 2013, goosebump machine! Remember, let the video play out fully, there's a surprise near the end;)
Completely agree!

From the same concert the other end of Epica the sublime beautiful ballad "Chasing the Dragon" from the Retrospect concert. It also changes gears.
