This is a reupload, after I found a bunch of problems with the version I premiered. I lost a quarter of my video earlier the morning I had posted it, and was scrambling to finish it. Quite the analogy for the unfinished release of the film.

15:33 "She's supposed to be old and decrepit!" THANK YOU!! Someone FINALLY called out this incomprehensible de-aging and excess glamorizing of Grizabella. Yes, she's a glamor cat. But she's past her prime. The entire song of Memory is a call back to her glory days. You can absolutely have an older character still show subtle hints of a glamorous past. And yet, I've seen a few productions now that make this character appear way too young and glamorous and miss the entire point of her backstory. It'd be like trying to cast a sexy young actress in the lead for Sunset Boulevard, it doesn't work! Dx Thank you so much for touching on this! Great review! :)

I like Jennifer Hudson. Having said that, I did not like her interpretation of Memory. She did not go through the range of emotions during the song that Elaine Paige. It felt, like Taylor Swift's, the performance was phoned in. The Skimbleshanks number was the best in the whole movie. It was like the cast finally awake.

iirc, the reason Mistoffelees sometimes sings his own song, sometimes doesn't, is that his primary purpose is to be one of the best dancers in the show (his Conjuring Turns consist of 24 consecutive fouettés en tournant, which is... not easy...), and sometimes they can't find a fitting dancer who can also sing. So in those cases they give his song to Tugger :)

I have literally brought this up to people (or if not that she isn't old enough, then at least the fact that she doesn't look "worn" enough) and they argued with me. It completely undercuts what her character is meant to be: completely outcast from society, probably hasn't seen any sort of social acceptance or empathy in years. She kinda looks like she's just fine, and thus instead of seeming abandoned and just longing for a real connection and acceptance, she comes across as extremely whiny.

    • @astrinymris9953
      @astrinymris9953 4 роки тому +35

Another UA-camr said that animators work on CGI movies for multiple years, making the rush job on 'Cats' even stranger. What's the point in getting it out in time for this year's Oscars if it wouldn't have a chance at winning? Take the time to do it right and THEN release it. You'd think that would be a no-brainer.
Wikipedia says the producers thought it would be "... appeal to young women as counterprogramming against Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker..." Apparently, the hoary old myth that science fiction is a male preserve which women and girls aren't interested in is still alive and kicking.

aw this comment warms my heart. i didn't work on cats but i am in the vfx industry, and i hate seeing ppl blame bad vfx on animators. i don't think people understand that good vfx takes a lot of time and money to produce, and that often they are at the mercy of directors/executives in terms of art direction. MPC, one of the studios that worked on Cats, also made Life of Pi and Jungle Book which both have animals and fur and are visually stunning so it's not like they can't do it.

In "The Show", I always thought Demeter, and Bombalurina went there to escape their past with Macavity, and that he was there to get them back. Specifically Demeter, since I expect Bomb kitty would be too difficult. She would give him all kinds of hell. Or maybe it's because Demeter can sense him, and that's a problem for him. For "the film", I'd assume Macavity would want to go to the Heaviside layer for the same reason anyone would. To see those wonders only one Jellicle will see. To learn those secrets travelling through the Heaviside layer's radio waves, and be reborn with that knowledge.

I am a fan of CATS. The 1998 version of the movie was my favorite after school movie to watch, next to Joseph, Into the Woods (with Bernidete Peters as the Witch), Oklahoma and Phantom of the Opera, and the Music was what I fell asleep to. It was the musical that got me into Theatre and I even got to be a part of our local Collage's Production of CATS as a Kitten. When I heard a Movie was going to be made with the Plot extended and Judi Dench was going to be in it, (she was supposed to be the original Grizabella but because of an accident the part was given to another), I was worried and excited. I didn't place any expectations high on the ladder for a non bias view.
Then on December 20, 2019 after work, I changed into my CATS CAST shirt I got when I performed it and watched it in the theatre alone. Afterword, I sat in the car and just absorbed what I just saw and realized something. I didn't go to the movie for the CGI. I went for the Nostalgia. The Music and Dance. I liked the movie. THE CGI DOESN'T MATTER TO ME!!! (don't judge me!) I will admit after seeing it two times every week after the night it came out and seeing the corrected version of it, I remembered one interview I saw when the movie was first announced that this CGI Tech was new. It is my opinion that they used this movie as a test subject for the Tech. AGAIN: THAT IS MY OPINION!!!!! This just means the Tech can only get better from here.
I don't care what people say, I say again I. LIKED. IT!!!!

Yes, finally I have found a safe space with some people who actually like the movie..!
I never obsessed over the musical to that extent but I enjoyed it when I saw it a few years back (which was apparently enough for me to make me enjoy the movie as well)
Also: when you were talking about Misto's scene it was like you were speaking from my heart (or your opinion on Munkustrap. Or on Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazers song.) Or the fact that you also noticed Munkustrap's and Misto's looks in the background while old Deuteronomy was speaking and laughed your ass off. Or that you thought that in certain scenes.. the fur even looked nice. Basically, I feel pretty much the same about everything you said

When it comes to cats I feel really bad for the people that put in all their strength and effort into this movie. From the dancers who learned to sing to the singers who had to learn how to act. The problem is the parts of the film that just fail to reach that height. Whether a scene, CGI, or concept that wasn’t given enough time for reflection and revise or was just blatantly ignored, it caused some parts to fall flat or even suffer. The people who truly tried their best don’t deserve the hate and shame from some of the audience just because they are in something they don’t have complete control over. When people are given lyrics to sing for a movie they will try their best to sing it and when artists have to apply a CGI design they’ll try to make it neat. It isn’t their fault when they have no say in the lyrics. They should have still been praise as their role and not the awkward design that surrounds them.

Away from all the valid points... all the little animations in this are fantastic! 😃✨
Ha ha, and yup. 1981 London Mungo & Rumple song was more slinky than the newer, jazzy version. They probably thought that would better suit their shady characters in the film.

I would only trust the opinion of someone who was a fan of the stage productions or 1998 film. For everyone else who hated this adaptation; I get it, if you're coming from the perspective as someone new to CATS and you incessantly complain about the CGI and simple plot. But they also don't get CATS, so I never had any interest in their opinion anyways.

right now im mostly nnoyed at reviews of people who realy dont know about the show, so it absolutely didnt come from nowhere and has actually been a successful musical for... decades... its really good dammit!
i understand the changes they made to introduce new people to it, but i still don't like it, idk
also i only know about the jazzy version of mungojerrie and rumpeteaser because i have a 'best of lloyd webber' cd with the old version, honestly the jazz version gives me a 'expectation' of them and the most well known version a 'reality'.
i don't like the movie! maybe im a huge sucker for the 98 version, i dont hate it, but i dont like it! really doesnt deserve the lynching it has received (maybe some of it, for the cgi they were probably forced to rush) but people make it seem like it was foodfight or something
im mostly just mad at it being a hollywood movie, with all the problems that comes with that, it really isn't a show that shouldve gotten that treatment in my opinion

I agree, all the reviews starting with "Now, I've never watched the show..." were completely useless and just badly researched. It's a huge cultural phenomenon with decades of success, surely you could educate yourself on it a little before making a video about the remake? We all saw in the trailers that the CGI was questionable and if you're generally weirded out by people dressed as cats singing and dancing, that's not really the movie's fault. I had no way of telling whether the movie was actually bad or not, so I really hoped Caitlin would give us her 2 cents about it!

The film should be able to stand on it's own without ever seeing the original, and anyone who goes to see it should be able to give a fair review on it. The problem seems to be, that most of them don't. They make up "facts" about something they have no clue about, and compare it to something they've never seen. People are just accepting these "facts" for the truth without giving ANYTHING a chance, and between that, and the horrible changes in the revival, I'm afraid that Cats is going to be ruined forever more, when it deserves to be in the hands of someone who knows what to do with it.

Madam, if they wanna take you to UA-cam jail over this movie, they'll have to go through me. I loved it too, and agree with everything, including the flaws, which I read they COULD have fixed if they hadn't been given impossible time crunches to get through. Why they couldn't have given themselves more time to perfect it is beyond me; but I can definitely appreciate the effort they put into it, and it doesn't really deserve all the hate, I agree.
TBQH, in a nutshell, the movie is just pure fun, and shouldn't be overthought, probably much the same as the stage show (another positive reviewer I watched pointed out that it's best to actually go into the movie with a kid's mindset, of looking to be mystified and ensconced in this world and entertained. After all, it's an adaptation of a children's book of poems, whimsical cat stories, and you can bet that the people who had the most fun watching the movie are youngsters. But I digress, my inner child is still ten x3 ). It's another in a long line of different productions (there's even different alternate-universe Cats shows in other countries; look up the steampunk version, for one), and one taken in interesting directions at that. :3

The 1998 version came out when I was 14-15 and my mom and I used to watch it over and over and over again. We’d randomly sing the songs at each other and get them stuck in each other’s heads. We did a ton of research so we could understand the story and who the characters were, and CATS was kinda “our thing” for most of my high school years. So when I heard this movie was coming out I knew my mom and I would have to go see it together. I drove two hours to take her to the movies and we both thoroughly enjoyed this version. Yes, it has its issues, but it’s not as terrible as a lot of people want to make it out to be. Yes, it’s weird and colorful and surreal, but at least they didn’t “mainstream Hollywood” it. I’ve found like two people other than my mom and I who actually had fun watching it, so this video was refreshing to watch! (Also, totally agree that this Munkustrap has to grow on me. Munk has been my fave since I first watched the VHS version and I really liked Robbie Fairchild as him. And DAMN does the Skimbleshanks song SLAP in this movie!)

So glad that I was not the only one who liked it :D I actually saw it twice, because I had to drag both my mother and my boyfriend to see it. My absolute favourite number was Skimbleshanks, but this version of Mr Mistoffelees has grown on me aswell (despite the glaring lack of him whisper-yelling "Presto!").
Editing again after watching more of the video: I am actually so thankful, that when I first watched it at the premier in my local cinema, me and my boyfriend were the only people there. I could totally lose myself in the movie, shed tears of joy, lipsync to the songs, grin from ear to ear etc without feeling weird about it.

Ok, confession time: I've waited 21 years for this damn movie to come out (basically since Speilberg had toyed around with the idea of an animated adaptation) and... I'm honestly not shocked at the reception. Cats has always been a very niche piece and, much to my inner child's discontent, isn't something that's going to be appreciated by the general population.
That being said, I got to enjoy the movie twice, warts and all. :) I do hope that this becomes a cult classic.

But... Cats WAS enjoyed by the general population. It was one of THE Broadway musicals of the 80s and 90s, running for 18 years consecutively, is still in the top 5 longest-running on broadway and top ten in the West End. That's why they made such a huge film out of it. And why a professional recording exists - which was filmed with a pulled-together cast from 3 or 4 different productions from different countries.

I am so happy that you enjoyed the movie. I was starting to think that me and my sister were the only ones. We used to watch the 1998 movie as well (I was 5). It was without a doubt a wonderful part of our childhood. I was so nervous going in to watch the movie that I was literality shaking. When the movie started and the music I started to understand why I was shaking and when 'Jellicle Songs For Jellicle Cats' started I knew that the shaking was my excitement. Throughout the whole movie I was smiling, I was laughing, I was crying, I was dancing in my chair, I even started singing. I was completely in the moment. For it was an enjoyable movie and I am glad that I saw it. I clapped when it ended and I was practically skipping out of the theater. Just imagine a 6ft 1in 250lbs man skipping and singing down a hall right next to a bunch of people that just came out from watching Star Wars episode 9. If there was something that I criticize it's the final act. Specifically after Mr. Mistofelees song everything seems rushed. The final bit with Macavity seemed half-finished/unresolved. It felt like we were heading for one last confrontation that was cut. To end things I will say that I like the movie and have every intention of by the DVD when it comes out.

I specifically didn’t pay too much attention to the effects, because I’m an animation student, and I knew if I did I would be nitpicking it instead of paying attention to the movie... and I enjoyed the movie

EXACTLY. I'm an actually an animation alumn myself, 2d and 3d. Precisely how I can put myself in the place of the CG artist. I know what kind of work had to go into making those tails and ears, which makes me appreciate the details of the movement all the more

One thing's for sure - yours is the definitive opinion on both the stage show and the movie. I would never have known I could like the original so much or not hate everything about the movie if it weren't for you. Thanks, Caitlin!

The cats musical film that was talked about this holds so much nostalgia for me... when I was really little my granny had a vhs tape of it and I would watch it literally every time I went to visit her. It's quite literally a huge part of my childhood. Plus I also had an actual old cassette tape of people reading the poems it's based on and loved that too... I have been scared to see the film just cause even from the trailer I was honestly terrified by some of the casting choices (Rebel Wilson especially) this gave me hope that seeing it wouldn't make me want to scratch out my own eyes

i recently watch Cats 2019 like two weeks ago and i actually love it, and i agree your opinions and there's are some scene that i like. and i didn't even cringe at all when i saw the trailer and the movie and i don't mind that it's bad, and also Victoria, Mistoffelees, and Munkustrap are also my favorite characters in the movie and also fell in love with the actors who play them. and i also love Victoria and Mistoffelees moments in the movie as well they're super adorable.

I actually quite liked “Beautiful Ghosts” I felt it was a great response to “Memory” in that it showed Grizzabella that Victoria understood her feelings of abandonment and sadness and that they could be overcome. To me, it was a good way to give Grizzabella a spark of hope so that she could work up the courage to audition for the Ball.
Keep in mind the movie is my only exposure to CATS lol, but I felt like it was one of the better pieces of connective tissue of the movie and gave Victoria more of a reason to exist.

It seemed to me victoria was Actually saying that grizabella was lucky. That she had a good life and she should be grateful and has no right to be sad when victoria never knew what grizabella lost. It displayed a profound lack of empathy. Not only did beautiful ghosts destroy, like, the entire point of the movie by belittling and degrading grizabella, but theres also that bit where victoria touches grizabella before she finishes memories and the part where grizabella shys away from being touched.
Like...victoria actually pulled the starving children in africa card.

So this comment is old and you’re not going to see this reply, I’m sure. But Beautiful Ghosts is actually kind of awful.
My dad just died, and in a grief group, I was sharing how sad and upset I am about this, and another member of the group told me, “Well, I never had a dad. At least you have nice memories. I have nothing.” Which was completely invalidating my very legitimate grief.
And that’s exactly what Victoria does to Grizabella with Beautiful Ghosts. And I hate it.

It was really nice getting a glimpse of the point of view of somebody who is familiar with the original musicals of Cats. I haven’t seen the shows nor the movie yet, but I think after hearing what you have to say about it and learning about what the shows were like, if I end up seeing the movie could actually enjoy it, despite what others are saying. I enjoyed your video!

It's good to finally see that other people enjoyed this movie like I did. I was waiting for your video, because you are the only one on youtube that I know that actually likes the original musical and I was curious how someone with that mindset would think about this movie. (other than myself of course) For a good while there, I thought that I was the odd one for enjoying it. But nope, thankfully there are others. But I also think that this movie is going to join the list of famous so bad it's good movies. So I don't have much else to add, other than I will definitely get this movie when it comes out in physical format and have a blast with it.

Went to see it and there was a total of 15 people in the theater, my friend and I adored how terribly wonderful it was and my husband was at a loss at how ridiculous it was to him. The whole theater started laughing during the first shot except for this one lady who loudly said "The movie just started!" Save for that one lady, everyone laughed until they cried and we all clapped when the credits started to roll. It truly was an experience and at our New Year's Eve party my friend and I could only talk about how much we loved Skimbleshanks and Mr. Mistoffelees.
