Natural Food Colourings!

  • These natural food colourings can be made from ingredients in the pantry/fridge and used to colour various foods and cosmetics without having to resort to nasty artificial colourings. These are all really simple tricks/recipes and hopefully they are useful to you X
    Natural pigments;
    - red/pink - beet juice, dried beet, dried raspberries
    - yellow - saffron or turmeric
    - orange - carrot juice or dried
    - green - spinach juice or dried
    - purple -red cabbage liquid - or dried
    - blue - red cabbage liquid & pinch baking soda
    - brown -cocoa
    The taste of these colours can be masked with a slight flavouring like vanilla, caramel, peppermint essences or zests of fruit, oils etc. I don't mind the tastes and only find the turmeric and spinach particularly noticeable X

    Wow I'd never heard of mixing baking soda with cabbage juice to make blue but it works really well! Also for those complaining about the taste of turmeric or spinach, try using marigold petals for yellow and matcha for green.

    That is so cool how the purple turns blue! And it's kind of greeny blue as opposed to more indigo like you might think.

    The red cabbage is what is called a natural indicator which is used for the test between alkali acid and neutral and baking soda being an alkali would turn the solution blue and thats why you got your blue food colouring

    How would you use the blue if you add baking soda to the cabbage water? Baking soda will definitely change the taste of anything you add it to. What can the blue be used for?
    Thanks so much for the info. I look forward to trying these.
    Maybe some will work in my homemade soap recipes that I plan to try for the first time too.
