Chinese names of other nations are translated not from English pronunciation of country names, but each country's native language. Example: Greece in Chinese sounds like "Hee Lah", which is translated from "Hellas" in Greek, not "Greece" in English.
The ancient name of Egypt in China (recorded in Tang dynasty) was 米息, in pinyin "mi-xi", pronounced like "mi-si". But the modern name was changed to 埃及(ai-ji), when the French and then English (who colonized Egypt at around the same time the Europeans made contact with China) introduced it as so to the Qing Empire. Given the heavy international pressure that China was under during that time, as well as indeed not knowing about Egypt too well and hence would have to trust the western nations' words for it, they changed the name to resemble "Egypte" in French. As for Cambodia, actually the translation was from "Kampuchea", and though it indeed sounds much closer to 柬埔寨 pronounced in Cantonese (and other southern dialects), any country name was treated as serious business and hence always translated to the centralized official Chinese language, which meant 官話 (official dialect) back in the earlier dynasties. But the accent of the official dialect changes slowly over the years, back then the official dialect was indeed closer to southern dialects such as Cantonese. Still, if you pronounce Kampuchea in Cambodian, it sounds similar enough to 柬埔寨 in Mandarin, though of course it sounds even more similar to southern dialects such as Cantonese, and actually EVEN more similar to some dialects in Guangxi, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces where Cambodia was very closely located. Alfred is right though that there are many Chinese words that were translated from Cantonese translations of English, but typically these would be things like brand names or other none-reducible nouns, not concepts/functions (where the Chinese would analyze the meaning and recombine using Chinese logic/language instead of trying to resemble sound), and not big diplomatic things like nation names: for example, much of South Eastern Asia were within the Sinosphere for a long time, so they wouldn't really need the extra step.

Interesting, in Latin American Spanish “America” is the whole continent from Alaska to La Patagonia, and we refer to the US as “Estados Unidos” but never as “America”.
I learned that when I took Spanish! In Arabic it is also ‘United States’ (translated literally, not phonetically) but in colloquial speech people tend to say some version of “Amrīka.” In my dialect it’s Mirikan lol
[Translated] It is common, and thus acceptable, to use _norteamericano_ as a synonym of _estadounidense_ , even though strictly speaking, the term _norteamericano_ can equally be used to refer to the inhabitants of any country in North America, it normally applies to the inhabitants of the United States. But _americano_ should not be used to refer exclusively to the inhabitants of the United States, an abusive usage which can be explained by the fact that in the United States, they frequently abbreviate the name of the country to "America" (in English, with no accent). Unlike Spanish and other languages, English has no international body that regulates use of the language.
Same in Canada. I always say United States or États-Unis since I speak french as a first language. They really think they’re the Navel of the World. We’re all Americans, like Europeans in Europe.
Ok I will write them in my language (spanish) •Korea: corea. •EEUU: Estados Unidos •China: china •Japan: Japón •Portugal: Portugal •Mexico: México or Mejico (we usually write "méxico" but we pronounce it like "mejico" ) •Deutschland: Alemania •Turkey: Turquía •South africa: Sudáfrica •Thailand: Tailandia •Cambodia: Camboya •Poland: Polonia •Brazil: Brasil •France: Francia •Egypt: Egipto That's all :3
CLARA NOT OSWALD Exactly, but we mexicans don't it if you write méjico even though is actually correct, in old spanish the x had the sound of an j and the name of México was written at that time. It just looks better that way
The _"x"_ is *NOT* silent in Spanish, _"h"_ is indeed silent, but that's not the case with _"x":_ México, Xavier, Alexandro, Texas, Xochimilco, xolo, xola éxito, xilofóno, anexión, éxtasis, tóxico, próximo, xilema, lexema, Xiconténcatl, asexual, sexo, sexi, xantina, texto, xilografía, exacto, exámenes, examinación, excluir, exhalar, xenofobia, yuxtaposición... in conclusion, the _"x"_ in Spanish already have rules of pronunciation depending on the location of the letter, also, historical context of certain words is very important to take in consideration.
CLARA GRACIA Es cierto pero la x se pronuncia j porque antiguamente en el español se pronunciaba así . Otro ejemplo es la palabra Texas que pronunciamos Tejas
7 років тому+3
Aclaración en la antigüedad la X sonaba tipo "sh/ch" por las lenguas indígenas. Al ser español se cambio por el sonido de j. Es válido decir Méjico, Méshico (haciendo referencia a la pronunciación si se escribe con X). La mayoría decimos México como con J :v
Nobody write it in Bahasa Indonesia? Chinese names of other nations are translated not from English pronunciation of country names, but each country's native language. Example: Greece in Chinese sounds like "Hee Lah", which is translated from "Hellas" in Greek, not "Greece" in English.
Good to know 👍
actually 美国 is translated from English pronunciation
Weird, since Egypt is Misr and they also wrote it incorrectly in the card thingy before the pronunciation. Idk how it became Egypt from Misr/Masr
Ahh okay that's really interesting
A verdade é que : Nós brasileiros somos foda. O pessoal dos demais países citados no vídeo nem ligaram, já para nós, bastou apenas uma bandeirinha no cantinho do vídeo para os BRs marcar presença e é assim em todos os videos que citam o Brasil. Sinto-me muito orgulhoso de fazer parte desse povo tão caloroso... #Brazil

The heart next to Turkey in the subtitle did not go unnoticed, we love you 💌💌
Interesting, in Latin American Spanish “America” is the whole continent from Alaska to La Patagonia, and we refer to the US as “Estados Unidos” but never as “America”.
I learned that when I took Spanish! In Arabic it is also ‘United States’ (translated literally, not phonetically) but in colloquial speech people tend to say some version of “Amrīka.” In my dialect it’s Mirikan lol
I'm brazilian. I'm american too.
Não sei vocês mas as vezes me refiro ao EUA como América.
The _Diccionario de la lengua española_ published by the Real Academia Española advised against using americanos exclusively for U.S. nationals:
Ok I will write them in my language (spanish)
•Korea: corea.
•EEUU: Estados Unidos
•China: china

Mexico in Spanish is Méjico that's why it sounds like the x is silent but it is not, we say sexy the same way as you
CLARA NOT OSWALD
Exactly, but we mexicans don't it if you write méjico even though is actually correct, in old spanish the x had the sound of an j and the name of México was written at that time. It just looks better that way
+Josue López You are right!
Aclaración en la antigüedad la X sonaba tipo "sh/ch" por las lenguas indígenas. Al ser español se cambio por el sonido de j.
Es válido decir Méjico, Méshico (haciendo referencia a la pronunciación si se escribe con X). La mayoría decimos México como con J :v
Nobody write it in Bahasa Indonesia? I'll write it then
