I will never get over this series, and I will never get tired of hearing people talk about it

I think the "moments like rain" comment reminds me most of all that it all counts. All of what I'm doing counts. Even if I'm the only one who sees it.

I love Hill House and Bly Manor as a unit because while they don’t tell the same story, they seem to almost rhyme with one another. It’s a thing of beauty.

How you described Flanagan writing dialogue makes sense to why he would be adapting Christopher Pike, whose dialogue, whether it was due to the times or just to his distinct writing style, is also weird as hell, and not how anyone would talk in real life. Looking forward to The Midnight Club!

Thank you for this video, I am on my lunch break before another grad class and I am struggling to hold my tears back. I love hearing other people's thoughts on Hill House as it is one of my all time favorite series. You touched on everything I loved about it. As someone with a ton of siblings, this kind of family drama tears at my heart. And as a lover of horror, Flanagan's ability to blend the two genres so seamlessly is what makes him one of my favorites. Hill House just gets how people with trauma, especially families, cope. The idea of the Crain siblings as the stage of grief has been talked to death but I love that Flanagan was willing to show the ugly side of grief. I love Steven and Shirley simply because they are allowed that ugliness, while still being whole and complete characters. I also love how it's no one person's fault. It's not wholly Hugh's fault, nor Olivia's. It's not even wholly the House's fault, as the pain and anger continued after the Crain family left. Grief is a powerful thing, and we cannot deal with it alone. Idk man this was a really fantastic analysis and now I gotta rewatch the series

I'm absolutely floored that more people are suddenly seeing this film after Midnight Mass came out. I'm glad Flanagan, Hill House, and all of his other works are becoming so much more prevalent in the public sphere. It's like that little indie band you love finally getting a breakout song or three and now they have the reach to make whatever they want. Love seeing people respond the same way to this sort of stuff as me. Thanks for watching!

Hill house is an absolutely profound and moving emotional experience, it's hard to put in to words. Except perfection.

When I was researching for making a video about Mike Flanagan and his movies I stumbled upon your channel and what a find that was
Even though my video is a bit longer than yours but I think the way you write your script just impeccable

I've been gushing to everyone around me about Mike Flanagan's work and how impactful it is, but I never could say everything properly to show my admiration. You nailed it perfectly, though!! I adore this analysis and the love you show about these shows/films. Looking forward for more!

Brilliant, sensitive and moving. This analysis of what, I think, is one of my favourite shows ever, is as close as it comes to how I felt about it when I saw it first. At t one point this made me cry about the fact I wasn’t there when my father died. Thank you for this. Great work.

This popped up on my recommended and I was so curious to see your analysis on his work and then I was living for how much you spoke about Hill House. Especially when you noted that you've known people/have been the Crain children at one point or another...That is one of the big things that has always stuck with me about Hill House. Over the years I have been every Crain Child in one sense or another. I felt like I've always tried to figure out how to even explain Flanagan's style (especially as an aspiring screenwriter myself) and I think you hit it perfectly on the head. Definitely earned a new sub from me :)

I'd love to hear your opinion on Midnight Mass, since I adore that show. Could you make a video on that as well? 😍

Taking an indefinite break from videos right now to focus on some personal projects, but in short I really loved it. Didn't scare me as much as say Oculus, and didn't impact me emotionally as much as Hill House, but it's still masterful and the small town environment lends so well to an ensemble story like he's been doing with familial units, I'm surprised Flanagan hasn't decided to tell stories on that scale up to now. Plus that last episode... Definitely the most "fun" I've had watching one of his endings in a while, and I can tell he felt the same.

Dude it was sooooooo good. The monologuing this time around definitely felt a bit more out of place and more abstract, and the religious trauma themes didn't resonate as strongly with me, but I will say that I had a lot more ~fun~ this time around. That last episode was absolutely fire (pun intended). Reminded me of Hush or Ouija, where Flanagan got to just explore neat premises and set up a lot of cool imagery and scares. Robert Longstreet absolutely killed it here, by far my favorite performance from him.

Loved the video! Hill house is perfect, is one of the roundest stories i've witnessed, my favourite. However ,i want to share a personal opinion and see if it is shared by someone else. I really dislike the monologues. For me, in the way I understand movies, scripts, even books, monologues (which i've found excessive in Midnight mass) have to be very carefully used, since they are basically a tool to tell something instead of showing it. When you dont know how to show something , or just dont want to make an effort, you use a monologue. A character shouldn't need to explain how she or he is , you just see it, is shown in his actions. I found this problem very obvious in the many monologues there are in Midnight mass, I found them unnecessary ,almost boring, make you disconnect from the character by hearing about them instead of living the issue with them. Still i think Hill house is perfect !❤️❤️

Faboukous and thoughtful analysis. But I disagree with as much as I agree. I love MF’s version for as many reasons as I fell it doesn’t serve the novel and film. And the film was one of only truly scary films I watched as a young teenager. Great job. Made me think.
