According to the Harry Thompson Cook book, this is Mavis Catches Up With.., 22nd November 1989.
Many thanks, I have updated the title and description. 👍
Mavis Nicholson was one of the most natural of interviewers and IMHO was good as Michael Parkinson.
Mary Parkinson was also a great interviewer too
Better than all of them.
Utter tosh…..she does not let the guests talk…..so eager to talk over them and on occasions talks down to them…..give me Parky any day
Three of the best in the business
Witty, intelligent, talented and effortlessly charasmatic, the both of them. Mavis comes across as a slightly stern Aunt but asked good questions and exudes a certain Welsh warmth, you can see she was fond of both of them, particularly Dudley Moore. These kind of people barely exist anymore in current day UK.
Viewing this video, I can see how Dudley Moore became a sex symbol. He looks great. He sounds wonderful. He even dressed beautifully. And so intelligent and charismatic. It's no wonder the most beautiful women in Hollywood like Susan Anton and Tuesday Weld among others fell for him. Absolutely tragic that he got that terrible disease that slowly killed him. No one around like him, Peter Cook or Jonathan Miller today.
Alan Bennet from Beyond the Fringe is still with us.
Classic comics, funny on the outside, crying on the inside.
Peter Cook was friends with a homeless looking chap called Broncho who wandered around Hampstead for years. Sadly both gone now
Here they are joking about what they'll be doing in 15 years time and neither of them made it to then. Peter died 6 years later age 57, and Dudley died 13 years later age 66. Mavis comments that I'll be a lot older than you then (in 15 years time), and she lived until 2022, age 91.
It's interesting how Peter Cook so obviously admires Dudley Moore and how Dudley is so casual about his own obvious talents.
Well, he has a pair of enormous balls and they dragged on the mat.
Peter passed on 6 yrs after this & Dudley lived for 13 yrs. RIP, two wonderful comedians that I’ve just discovered recently.
My wife saw Dudley in Waterstones in Hampstead with one of his statuesque wives he was busy trying to make my wife and her friend laugh, who at the time was a schoolgirl .
His then wife was busy telling him off!
Inteligence is such a rare comodity nowadays... PC is absolutely brilliant. DM is a true talent.
Having read about this interview, I'm very grateful for this post. It shows these two amazing talents at their best, and especially in their attitudes towards one another. Nice to watch PC showing DM consideration and kindness and vice versa. Theirs was a complex relationship. And yet, they produced so much wonderful comedic art, especially in Beyond the Fringe, Not Only But Also and in the film Bedazzled. Not to mention DM's musical output in jazz. His playing with his trio was truly sublime. Thank you, thank you very much for this post.
Knowing people like these existed is kind of life-affirming for me. Barry Humphries’ passing has only reaffirmed how dire things are now for me. In the age of The KKKKK clan and Kanye and Beckham et al.
Yeah but back then there was David Icke and Jimmy Savile. There’s always been wankers.
Dudley looks a picture of health compared to a sweaty, overweight, hungover Peter Cook. Flawed talent is generally the most interesting of course. On another note, I feel quite sorry for these 2 talents. It's seems as if they need Mavis there to coax them into honest observations of themselves and each other.
Also sad that neither of them would be alive 15 years later
22:00 Asked where they'd both be in '15 years time'... both great men never made it.
Who can forget derek and Clive, very very risqué.
Whats the worst job you ever 'ad?
Ah, Derek and Clive, a right pair of c***s!
Mavis was the perfect person to interview the likes of PC and DM, She is a bit like a stern but well loved headmistress/councillor
Perfect description!
I don’t think Dudley was easy to interview.
As a bloke not dissimilar age and grown up listening to Pete & Dud LP’s this was a revelation. There’s a whole heap vacuous, well meaning guff about mens mental health on the box and papers. We all have our coping strategies but takes real strength to come forward and be frank about depression and how to turn yourself around.
wonderful interview. Piquant revelation re Dudley Moore's complex around his height. Being a 5ft 2 sex symbol must have boosted his confidence immensely.
Interesting stuff. The original interview is 50/50 Dud & Pete, but the later one is all Dud. Pete takes a back seat and sweats profusely
Peter’s sweating is likely due to COPD or other respiratory or cardiac ailments; he didn’t look to be in good health to me, and he smoked constantly in every interview I’ve seen of him.
What I love most about celebrity interviews is that it's none of my business.
Gold Video Dump, GOLD!! Thank you!
She's so direct when questioning Pete's alcohol use and other areas. This is great interviewing where the idea isn't to just be provocative for the sake of it.
What a duo loved me some Cook...Moore was able to pull of the impossible by conquering the US! Cook and Moore together is like having George Carlin and Tim Conway as a duo! It couldn't work on paper but it did!
6:50 "Shaddap Mavis!" ha ha. Mavis Nicholson's interviews were always so polite and charming.
What's up with this two guys lol Dudley Moore and the other guy I've never heard of ? every interview I bring up they're both in . .. an interview together are they together see a couple ? Very strange
Like being interviewed by your mum , I can vaguely remember Mavis from when I was much younger.
Very worthwhile to read the massive book 'One Leg Too Few' before watching this. A lot of what they say here has so much else between the lines and explains there ums and ahs and frowns.
Great times with these two. Just using their talents to entertain. Now everyone is too cool for school and just skate by on their looks with no real talent.
Mavis was a complete pain in the arse. Constantly talking over both Pete and Dud.
Mavis was a great interviewer it must be said.
love these guys
Thanks.
Absolutely.
Does cook ever stop smoking
What a nosy interviewer.
Mavis is a crashing bore. Hope the lads got a good few bob for this one.
"You don't like saying other peoples' words!" Damn, nail on the head. I guess there is a reason there are a chosen and a damned. Here's hoping we're not both in one.
That’s right, I completely agree. It’s not that he wanted to be in charge as such but more that he naturally inclined to being the centre of attention , and thus , was unable t9 be commanded by another person
This is what I love about the Internet. Everything else about it is rubbish apart from nuggets of television gold like this .
