They are young, why do they have to set an example for anyone? I don't think that they are there to be a teaching moment. Great girls, they work their butts off. Hope dad provides them with a better work environment. I won't hold my breath as he has had them working in freezing weather and high heat, now rain for quite some time.

OK, I must say this. Since you first set up that mill I"ve said you're in the wrong place. Lots of experience with mills and logging, I would move your controls to the side of the mill so you are positioned in the corner with the live deck on your right and Jade on your left. Put the controls to the left of the end of the log so you're facing the mill outfeed table and about in the middle of the outfeed table. This will allow you to have everything visible around you. You control everything!! You're the sawyer!! A small shack with windows right, left, and front allow you to see everything and protect the saw.
This is how regular sawmills are arranged and it really works well as this has been the arrangement for well over 100 years. Please try this as you will be very pleased. This will cure most of your operational issues. Pete.

I've seen a lot of mills and have never seen one set up like this either. I wouldn't like the saw coming toward me all day, seems dangerous. It would be great if someone from Woodmizer would come by and explain why that is the better setup. However I'm sure that's not going to happen.
If the bandsaw ever hits some larger piece of metal, like a horseshoe, the sawyer could be in some danger. The box they are talking about building would help I suppose, but I don't like the setup at all. I've seen too much over the years. Hard to believe they let her stand down there with no protection.

@@cameronhamer9432 The band saw they use is only a fraction the width and length they use in larger mills. So that's a plus in their favor. However I've seen the larger saws break in half, split, throw teeth, and go in crazy directions. The sawyer is usually more protected than the workers outside the saw cab. As to communicating with Jade: set up a two sided sign that swivels in your line of sight. Round ,Green for ''go ahead and cut.'' Red Octagon for ''Stop and wait until I am finished over here.'' A heavy duty vinyl cover with brass eyelets can be made to cover the control head when not in use. Use bungee cords to hold it down. We had equipment in the Air Force with dark blue covers that worked in the rain, snow and sun. You could in effect build a pole barn framework over the saw, I might know where you could get some wood and top it off with cedar (or other wood), shakes, for the roof. It would look classy and cool! Marc in Newark... TX.

Just orientate the end of the log you want to gauge the cut on, towards the mill operator. Then run the mill head down to the operator end and set the back of the blade at the height you want to enter the log. Then run the head back to the other end and enter the log cutting at that height. The person swamping should ideally wear a high-viz vest so the operator can better see them. A large round convex traffic mirror mounted in an appropriate location and angled appropriately will allow the operator to see the whole swamping work area. The operator definitely needs to be wearing a full face shield if running the de-barker.

If you weren't related to the boss, you would have to convince him that productivity would go up if you had a shelter. You would also be less likely to get sick in bad weather which would mean less health expenses for the buisness. Also, if you disconnect the control panel every night then you risk wearing out the connector. When I worked on a piece of satellite equipment, we limited to connecting it a maximum of three times before the plug would have to replaced because the springiness of the contacts would be worn out. Maybe that will help you get the shelter you need.

Some kind of roof keeps away the sunburn in summer and just a few days ago you cut in the rain and the electronics needs to stay dry as possible. You mill your own lumber to keep cost down. Like with anything working out the bugs will take some time but between you ladies I think the answers are there. Thank you for sharing👍♥️♥️

Coming from an electro mechanical background it occurs to me you could put the control center at the other end by having either the manufacturer or 3rd party make custom extension cables, hoses etc that would bridge the gap to where the hookups are near that other end. I have made up a few extensions like these for clients in the past to bridge cables, pneumatic and hydrauliic lines.

It's often difficult to adapt to a new set up. Just takes a little time. However it's not always a step forward....
The best approach is to add logic to the way you work.
Firstly you must and I mean must always cut the small end of the log first. The reason being that the sudden load on the blade is significantly less and the grain is far straighter than a possibility of hard dried butt ends that could also have wild buttress cross grain.
You also benefit from the big end being away from you means you can be a little off target and still achieve a constant board face or better.
On a single cut saw you have the benefit of inspecting the last board if it passes by the sawyer as it is pushed off the end of the log. On a horizontal this becomes the saw return stroke so you must be behind the saw.
In a small work crew setup you could even be the one that feeds the edger. Not always perfect on hardwood but for softwoods very simple.
Being behind the saw you are far far far safer. Material coming off any sawblade can achieve a rim speed of 340 metres a second. Personal experience says it hurts and losing an eye is a very big possibility with the kind of debarkers you are using.
Does dad have to skid? Forwarded timber is much cleaner.
Hope you are achieving the increased output promised with the lt70. I assume you are also running a different computer to what you're used to. 😊

Hello Emerald and Jade, my advice would be to do what works for you. If putting the control at the other end solves more problems than it causes do it and then solve the problems that makes. It seems to me the biggy of doing that is the possibility of getting hurt but that existed on the 40 as well. Perhaps putting a guardplate to prevent it happening or just being careful is the answer. In any case what ever you both decide I'm sure will work so both of you stay safe, and have a fabulous week as the good weather moves in. 🙂🌻🌻🧡

  • @markpell8979
    @markpell8979 2 місяці тому

Looks like in some ways the LT70 trades operator convenience (and safety?) for increased production capacity over the LT40. It's always hard to change habits when you're so accustomed to a particular machine and production routine. You're already milling far more lumber than before so as you and J come up to speed on the LT70, keep safety first. Maybe work out some hand signals to communicate with each other at a distance, and choreograph your moves so you're always in synch with each other. Since you two dance so well together, just think of this as a new dance. I definitely like the idea of 'the Boss' putting in some protection from flying debris for you at the operator's station.

I would set it up where you like it best . I have watched mills work great from either end . It would be good to start with a poll structure and Roof , board it in as you get time .

I'd move the controls to the other end and find a way for you and jade to work around that!!!

How about putting a webcam on Jade's side with an iPad at your end so you can see what she's doing? Also, perhaps a 2nd webcam showing you the blade entering the log.

Rugged radios might be a good solution. And who knows, maybe they could sponsor you too!

Consider using some of the off-cuts when milling ties or other logs to build a pole-type roof with enough height, at least over the sawing area.

Hopefully, you’ll use safety glass or heavy Lexan for the window in your shelter. 😊

From one grandpa to another... When you construct the new shelter, tilt the blade facing window in at the bottom, 2-3". Same way it's done on a ship's bridge. This will help in numerous ways - cut down glare, stop reflection on instruments, keep rain off better, flying debris will get angled down & away versus straight shot to straight vertical glass. Communications - blue-tooth headsets called 'marriage savers'. Thanks for being you.

I agree! I think an angled down window is the correct way to go.

Consider remote controlled grain cart or semi covers over downspout structure. plug both ends of tubes makes then very rigged & light weight. Place on movable base so it can be out of the way when not needed, but heavy so wind will not move it. I covered a 5x10 trailer so I could stand inside & pulled it over 807 miles of interstate at times 85+ & it still sets at my brother's place, USABLE.

I don't know who it was on UA-cam , but these guys had the cab of a vehicle to operate the mill from . i thought it was resourceful .

How about change the direction of rotation on the debarker motor and flip the debarker blade over.

They make a temperature controlled control booth. Larger Wood-mizer setups use it.
