Today, we take the PowerEdge R620 that I picked up from @ServerMonkey and configure the iDRAC port. I typically setup the iDRAC port to update the BIOS, firmware and push out the operating system when I don't want to be inside the cold LAN room setting up the server. Once I'm done with the configuration I kill the connection and remote desktop into the server to continue the configuration. Please enjoy and be safe everyone 🤓
Hey man, Few things to help you out with. Please don't take this as a rant or telling you want to do. 1) iDRACS should always be set on a static IP. ALWAYS! lol (you didn't need to set a DHCP at first) 2) Even if you did DHCP, why not just ping the IP to see if the IP is responding? lol 3) Best practice is to have your physical servers and VMs be on X subnet/vlan then your workstations, wireless, and IoT devices on a separate subnet/vlan (honestly all of those should have their own vlan and subnet to help distinguish what type of device they are by IP). 4) The R620 does work with Chrome. You need to go to the "settings" just above "launch" and change from Java to HTML5. Hit Apply and then you have Chrome support 5) Make sure you add it to the domain.
He could use DHCP reservation to keep the IP the same. However, I set all BMCs with a static IP as well. I use an Excel spreadsheet to manage statically assigned IPs. I like your recommendation of having a separate management network.

My choice (as well as yours) to use static is due to if whatever is hosting his DHCP scopes goes down and the iDRAC attempts to reach out to renew IP, it could lose said IP and now be effed. I am a network engineer and help support/manage 30 locations for my company. Since my role is more than just a Network Engineer, we created each said location to have at least 6 vlans/subnets for separating traffic so creating a vlan/subnet scheme was very necessary. Saves a lot of time when tracking down and resolving networking issues.
1) This is correct, but I set up DHCP for the server to get an IP address (temporary). I could of just took a laptop and set it to the same subnet of 192.168.0.x and set it up that way too. Then look at the IP address spreadsheet to see what's available ( yes I have one 😀 ). I did configure a static IP address on it at the end. wait.... did I? 🤔 😂 2) This is correct, but again I try to break down the video into a simple and easy steps. I could have done this video faster, but some people will complain that I'm going to fast and need to slow down. This is me slowing stuff down and breaking things down. lol (also my methods are very stubborn) - I did configure a static IP address at the end - 😂 3) 100% agree with you on this one. VLANs for the win! 4) Crap! didn't know that. I always use Firefox at the 9-5 job and use Chrome when I doing the recordings for you guys. Great tip and I will change my settings. Strange that chrome doesn't have HTML5 enabled by default. 5) adding to the domain I like doing this at a production level. when it's a lab server like this one. I typically add the ESXi server into domain. By the way, I don't see it as a rant. We're all here to learn from each other. No one is perfect. @@bjtechnewshd I cannot post a screen shot, but I am not talking about enable HTML5 in Chrome, but in the iDRAC. Go back to the Overview Screen on the iDRAC. To the right, where the preview window is, click on settings. In settings you will see "Plug-in type" Change this from Native (or java) and switch it to HTML5. This will allow you to use chrome. Thank you. If you allow me to raise a question, I have R640 and when I power on the server the fans sound is high and the display shows colour bands not the normal texts. It shows no amber LED. Any help please?
I got this same server refurb for like 500. I use it with windows bc of school and have a bunch of different VMs on it. I love having all that power and would love to add sound and maybe even graphics down the road.
You should be able to configure it from the server by using Ctrl E then don’t need to worry about dhcp, what if the idrac was previously configured for static on another machine? Keep in mind I used idrac 6
@BTNHD I don't get any link lights under the ethernet cable port connection to the iDRAC. When I'm in the iDRAC Settings under Network Settings-->NIC Selection: I only see LOM1 to LOM4. Any suggestions on what I need to do?
I've got an old Dell C6100 I what to move out to the garage for domestic harmony reasons, never messed with KVM-IP before, got a few questions about KVM-IP capabilities? Can KVM-IP be used for power off, on, reboot? What's the Video quality and lag time for static and video like? Basically how does it compare to direct connection.

The r620 has a standard express license. The enterprise license had to be purchased. If there’s a enterprise license that comes with the server then you are in luck.
If you have an Enterprise license and the in DRAC setting if the port is set to dedicated, the dedicated DRAC port will work, but if its on express license you should choose the port as LOM1 (your regular network port becomes shared) , Dedicated network port on works with Enterprise license, you can try googling for a trial Enterprise license, if you havent used on on the server
@@MrTsatia if you put the tag in the support site, it should show under configuration what it was ordered with, however easiest would be to call Dell tech support, because they can verify what license you have and email it to you if you don't have it, even if your out of warranty. In support site after you put your tag, on the right side where there is quick links you can see view product specs, that will show your original order

I popped the drives out and booted and got to the life cycle screen, setup dhcp, got my IP, but the default user/pass of root/Calvin doesnt work and the tag on the machine doesnt have a pass on it.
You would either need remote access to your network via a VPN or a PC on your local network via a remote access software such as teamviewer, anydesk, etc. You could also make the IP of your iDRAC public facing via your firewall. I would not recommend making the iDRAC public facing for security reasons.
Thanks for the video!! When I go into the network settings I have everything set the same as you..but when I try to update the firmware it still prompts me to configure the network settings. Once I go in there again it is set to DHCP but shows no NIC selected/IP address. When I select any of the NIC options(of the 4) and it is still left blank. Any idea as to what may be the issue?

When I was setting up the iDRAC, I accidently set the system password in the bios. The question is, can I clear the password?
Clear the bios… old fashioned way by removing the battery on a regular pc, not sure about servers with preos
