Very nice job for a beginner! I own the same watch you've just repaired! Your video guided me for my first 7009 service. Thank you a lot and keep up the good job!
When I was 10 years old, my father gave me his Load Matic. I have used it for no less than 48 years, and I have paid far more amount to maintain it than the original price of it. 😢
Wonderful restoration job! It is written in case back in Japanese: 25 years of service for the company. Mr. M Fujii must have felt proud for his service when he received the watch from the company. I’m not sure but it looks like the Mitsui & Co. logo.
Its cool to see a first go on a 5606! thanks for that. I've done a dozen or more and I've come to realize that the hacking spring is held in place by the balance cock and should be taken out with the balance and replaced at the end with the balance - thank you Spencer Kline for that one. Typically you would install the spring at the beginning along with the lever but the spring will go upheld as you work, even after you install the main bridge. Lastly, besides something like molykote dx or mobius 8213/8212/8302 to the barrel wall, you're not really supposed to put oil on mainspring like that. If anything a light wipe down of 8200 before winding just to keep it from tarnishing.
Heya. Great job. Some glass polishing tips for you. Take 'em or leave 'em as you see fit... When your goal is a crystal clear mirror polish, use more grits; less than double the grit value. Use up to 2000+ grit wet/dry before switching to glass polish. Each grit will remove the previous grit's scratches, so if you change sanding directions for each grit, you can easily see when it's time to switch to the next one. Take the glass out of the case. You can use CA glue to glue a handle of some sort to the back of the glass if needed. When done, some gentle heat and acetone will remove the glue. Use a float glass plate or other very very flat surface for sanding. Lastly, to know when you're done, reflected light edges will be very sharp. You will be able to clearly see details of the reflected light fixture. Don't stop until you're there. Cheers.
With the vintage seikos I use sandpaper up to 4000 (... 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000), before I get to the glass polishing pastes (I use 3 of those). Even before the paste, the 4000 gives it a finished look. Everything by hand, never risk it with a dremel. You ve done a great job! It's the result that matters. Got here because I just bought 2 LMs for restoration and I'm eager to familiarise myself with the 5606. Thank you for this video! Yeah, the plastic date star. That will be annoying.
I thought I'd messed up by using this as my first full service. Granted I practised on the ETA 6497 loads first, but the clarity of your presentation allowed me to convert a none functioning eBay cheapo LM into a fully functional watch (mainspring was bust and oils had dried up and I pinged the setting lever wheel spring into the 4th dimension). Cousins came to the rescue with 5 replacement springs for £5 and a main spring for £16. Its been running a couple of weeks now and pretty well (+/- 15s), so thank you from someone who's wife describes him as an unhinged do-it-yourselfer.
Glad you got yours up and running boss! I’ve found mine to be the best runner out of the watches I have, these LM’s were built well are are keeping their value 💪🏻 JSG
@@jsgwatches enthused by my success, I’ve bought a job lot of 4 more LMs from a friend in Japan . One works( badly) right off the bat, but the others don’t . One looks like it’s a through the crystal access and one has a different movement number. If it goes well, might try my hand at a King Seiko. Thanks again!
Very nice work, love the video. And I do appreciate the narration. So many repair/restoration video makers seem to think they don't need to talk through the process and explain things. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Thanks Tom, the voiceover is definitely the toughest part of a video 😅 I have gained some new respect for the guys and girls that are natural public speakers, it’s a talent! JSG
Great job on that restoration...given what cleaning tools you have available. Watch looks great...and functions as it should. You got a good value for what you paid for it...because you were able to bring it back to life .. Kudos to you....!
I have this exact watch and my date quickset stopped working awhile back. I've been debating cracking it open and attempting to fix it myself, but after watching this, it looks far more involved then I'm willing to attempt. I wouldn't mind attempting it, but by the time you purchase all the special tools, you could have just sent it off for cheaper and made sure it got fixed right.
awesome as always. Replacing a crystal is an option if someone else wants to pay for it but if it looks that awesome without a replacement its a no brainer.
Hi Justin, another great job. I also have a bit of a fancy for the 60s and 70s Seikos and I think you got this one done very cheap. I dunno about others but I'd say $250 to fully revive an LM is not a bad price, and it's never about the street price, is it? We aren't dealers, we're hobbyists. I recall a video or 2 ago asking if a staking set was in your near future and whaddaya know, you said yes and there it is! One tip I can give you with sanding is to tape the whole sheet to a sturdy piece of glass and move the piece in largish figure 8 moves. That way it saves our work bench getting wet and the piece gets evenly sanded in all directions. More importantly, it gets sanded *flat*; well actually parallel to the glass but for our purposes they end up the same. Going in circles can easily give you a slanted or bowed result. Cheers and once again great job
Thanks Alan, I plan to do a tutorial video on the glass cleaning alone as I’ve been impressed with the results I’ve got so far. Will definitely try this figure of 8 technique, appreciate the tip 🙏 JSG
the problem is that a functioning day date star fetches $70 alone and as long as King Seikos 5626 need them, they'll get plucked. I suspect that if this particular LM goes on the market it could very well get swapped to a KS.
Great job done here, plastic parts used by manufacturers are cheap and lightweight. In the end, always a source of troubles to come. Plastic hardens over time and becomes very breakable. You did good bringing this iconic watch back to life! Congratulations!
Great video thanks . Working on a 7546 right now. Thankfully the date corrector works ok at the moment. A Seiko guru guy in London put me onto a alternative cleaner for balances. Its CRC Mass Air flow sensor cleaner. I put a small amount in a screw top glass jar. Soak the balance and have had great results with the product.
This movement/case appears to uses a 300W76GN which Sternkreuz makes new for about £4 and is indistinguishable from an Seiko NOS - I've purchases both. Always worth taking a look. It's also best practice to separate the glass from the case as it looks like you're polishing the bezel as well and most likely needlessly flooding the crystal gasket with cerium oxide.
I will definitely look into those crystals! And you are not wrong about the cerium oxide flooding the gasket, the case needs a solid clean in the ultrasonic to shake the solution free. JSG

@@RIH_Photography thanks. I have just bought a LUMIX G7 so I can now record good 4K and a canon 100mm lens to get close in. Stay tuned . Once I’ve learnt how to use the kit I will be producing better quality visuals
I have just bought one of these but it needs a service. Faceted glass and melon green face. It is a beautiful watch. Paid more than £60, times it by 4 and that is roughly what I paid.
Hi your doing fine mate, i have been watchmaking for 3 and a half years i thought about a channel for me but i don't think sol, keep up your good work lad, later.
Nice job, I was also thinking about getting a Lord Matic, but a Hi-Beat version, but I think I'll get a Seiko Lord Marvel with a 5Hz movement as I won't have to worry about the Daydate or self winding functions. Also congrats to 1000 subscribers
The LM special (5206 and 5216) is in fact a completely different watch from the 56XX series and differs in almost every way - case design, movement, factory and even functionality, all of it. The 56XX series has a very unique train layout while the 52XX is typical swiss. The term Lordmatic is only really meant to distinguish price points for marketing purposes. Also if a non functioning day/date is annoying you can go for the 5601 LM three hander but they often go for more then a 5606 with non functioning day/date, haha strange right?
$50 for a flat crystal is a tad much. The AM ones go for $10 max from Sternkeuz. I have a 5206-5080 which has a faceted crystal. Try restoring a multi sided crystal 😁 I gave up in the end, well my fingers did. I went on the hunt and the only place was Yahoo auctions. A watch forum friend was about to make a large order so he added it to his list. I ended up paying £35 including all the shipping etc. It came with both gaskets too. Absolutely transformed my watch after I refinished the case and cleaned up the bracelet. Still undecided whether to try to remove the sharp dent from the clasp or not. I haven't touched the movement as it works and has strong numbers but the date won't manually change. The crown is locked and won't turn. The 52xx movements don't suffer from the plastic part in the 56xx ones so I'm stumped.
Absolutely fantastic job, Justin !!!! It looks amazing, it's no wonder you are happy with the results ! I didn't even do anything and even I'm ecstatic ! Really looking forward to seeing more of these videos ! I'm wondering if maybe you could look at a Russian Vostok mechanical/automatic sometime ? I would love to see what goes on 'under-the-hood', so to speak. My very best wishes to you, my friend. Love this channel ! 🤗☺️❤️✌️🖖🇬🇧
Try filling in those pits with uv cure clear resin for 3d printer before polishing. You could also try some windshield crack repair resin, which I believe I the same thing. Deep scratch will become almost invisible to naked eye.
I love the case of this watch case but not really the movement. I have a highbeat lord marvel with a perfectly aged champagne dial, do you think it would be possible to fit the 5740C with dial in this type of case?
great job, congratulations, I have two Lord matics to repair, I hope to learn how to fix them on my own. Now my problem today is the bracelet, How do you insert bracelet link pins? I took out one pin and I can't put it back. can you help me?
Have you considered experimenting with the glass 'chip repair' solutions that you can buy for repairing windscreens? I'm wondering if that could fill that remaining scratch?
Very good job. Although the cost of repairing one of these did put me off buying them. Just saw one available at a marketplace for about US50 with the date wheel issue.
u can also use dish soap for everything without shalack and ipa for displacing water (2 rinses), and naptha(lighter fluid) for the rest (palet fork and the balance). would be effective and low cost as hell XD
I’d personally recommend a stereo scope as they are easier to work with, but tend to be on the pricier side (AmScope). There are some decent digital scopes out there, mike over at my retro watches just reviewed a digital scope that looked pretty decent too (check his channel). Hope this helps 🙏 JSG
I have one seiko 5606 watch and when pulling out the crown to set time, I can see the second setting lever slightly moved, but it does not touch the balance wheel to hack second. I'd like to know how the second setting lever is triggered to touch the balance wheel, thanks.
great stuff. i assume you cleaned and oiled the balance jewels? also did you remove the diafix retainers to oil under the bridge cap jewels? they can be a right pain.
Hi JSG another enjoyable video, I got a seiko 7009a and used your video to guide me and fixed it, so Thanks. Can you share the link for the Chinese jewel tool?
Yep, this is a Chinese main spring winder set, cost me around £50, but I’m yet to be wowed by it. Out of the 10 watches I’ve worked on, I’ve only been able to use it on 3 of them! The other y watches had odd spring sizes that didn’t have a winder or combination that would fit to catch it and wind it. JSG
a refurbished Seiko Citizen Ricoh in the Indian market today costs less than $ 10 on eBay. just last week I bought myself a collection of 2 Seiko 5 and 2 Ricoh all together not in the region of $ 30. so look at developing countries while they can help
I enjoyed that, what a great job. I have 2 LM 25 jewel Seiko's one being the LM special and I love them. Does the LM you just worked on have a manual wind hack.
I absolutely love this watch, it’s not left my wrist for weeks. This one does have manual wind and hacking, along with the automatic wind. Absolute powerhouse of a movement
For a seiko 5, I think you could find a donor movement online for the replacement, should work out cheaper and will give you spares for any other future needs 👌🏻 JSG
Hello! I own the same Chinese set and the smallest point didn’t serve. Which size number did you use? Thanks for the video!! Greetings from Rio- Brazil!
There is an other online watch maker channel on UA-cam, also bases in Asia, he does have all the oils etc... maybe you should ask him about where he gets his stuff.. I'll try find the name.. it is: "Watch Repair Channel". I heard him complain about the moist east Asian climate even. And ordering watch parts from Manilla etc.. .
Most challenging part is filming in a humid climate, I have to turn the aircon off so it doesn’t affect the audio, and the room gets very warm/humid very fast! I’ll have a look into sourcing parts from Philippines, this could be a good Avenue to explore 🙏 JSG
Cap jewels oiled but my microscope footage wasn’t the best so I left it out, I may put it on my Instagram page. This movement has a mixture of diashock and diafix cap jewels, the diafix shock settings were a challenge!
I had a 70's seiko cleaned and it cost about $100,, I then found a crystal in the philippines on ebay that was another $25. If I had to put any parts into it, it wouldn't have been worth fixing.
this is precisely the main problem that today almost any watch cannot be repaired. For example, we have practically no watchmakers in New York, you can change the battery at a shoemaker's for 10 dollars, which is much more expensive than most cheap Chinese watches, or in a jewelry store your watch can be taken and sent to no one knows who, for no one knows what kind of repair. however, it will be very expensive. on the other hand, I once saw in a very provincial Walmart the new Seiko 5 for $ 30 !!!! at a discount. Naturally, there is no point in repairing. But this means something completely different that watchmakers are simply killing their profession today, and so the vast majority walk with an Apple Watch. With this attitude, when Yes, the minimum service becomes simply impossible, it is very difficult to explain to a person Why do you need to buy a watch? and by the way it took me less than one second on eBay to find a sapphire crystal for a dollar how can a simple glass replacement be so expensive?
Fantastic example of something just not worth repairing. One of the few Seiko models with a factory design flaw - the plastic quick set date. If you have the skills and patience and can fix yourself, good luck to you. Otherwise, cost to repair is prohibitive. I bought one described as “mint” only to find it had the common fault . I knew nothing of this prior to buying, as thought Seikos were all design masterpieces. On sold it immediately, declaring the fault. Do yourself a favour and buy a Lord Quartz!!
Great job, but too much whining about costs. You have ended up with a watch that is worth more than $500 on the market. A generic crystal from Cousins would have cost you very little.
Until you start ordering tools, it is called horology, once you start ordering, it is called horrorlogy. Damn everything expensive about watches. Spare parts, consumables, cleaners, tools every fricking tiny thing is expensive.
@@jsgwatches it’s an endless pit, a blackhole and will suck your wallet until it’s bone dry 😅. “Dear Hobbyists, welcome to the club, enjoy your time us.”

@@RIH_Photography thanks. I have just bought a LUMIX G7 so I can now record good 4K and a canon 100mm lens to get close in.
Stay tuned . Once I’ve learnt how to use the kit I will be producing better quality visuals
Nice work. 👏👏👏
You make some good points about buying a cheaper ‘project’ watch when you might as well spend a bit more and not have the hassle and extra costs
very good video well done 👍
Nice content bro
Thanks boss 🙏 JSG
I have just bought one of these but it needs a service. Faceted glass and melon green face. It is a beautiful watch. Paid more than £60, times it by 4 and that is roughly what I paid.
Hi your doing fine mate, i have been watchmaking for 3 and a half years i thought about a channel for me but i don't think sol, keep up your good work lad, later.
Nice job, I was also thinking about getting a Lord Matic, but a Hi-Beat version, but I think I'll get a Seiko Lord Marvel with a 5Hz movement as I won't have to worry about the Daydate or self winding
functions. Also congrats to 1000 subscribers
After seeing this, I’d say you can’t go wrong with any version of LM, quartz or mechanical, they are absolute gems!
Try restoring a multi sided crystal 😁
I gave up in the end, well my fingers did.
Could you post a link for the replacement date star wheel, really good commentary
I have Seiko LM special 5216. The beast. 👍
🤗☺️❤️✌️🖖🇬🇧
EXCELENTE SERVIÇO 👍👍🇧🇷
Try filling in those pits with uv cure clear resin for 3d printer before polishing. You could also try some windshield crack repair resin, which I believe I the same thing. Deep scratch will become almost invisible to naked eye.
I love the case of this watch case but not really the movement. I have a highbeat lord marvel with a perfectly aged champagne dial, do you think it would be possible to fit the 5740C with dial in this type of case?
Where did you order that replacement piece for the calender?
I have the same problem with mine.
I loved the video by the way
great job, congratulations, I have two Lord matics to repair, I hope to learn how to fix them on my own.
Agreed, the date star is another $40, plus the labour to replace which is a big task, may as well buy a fully working watch from the start 👌🏻 JSG
u can also use dish soap for everything without shalack and ipa for displacing water (2 rinses), and naptha(lighter fluid) for the rest (palet fork and the balance). would be effective and low cost as hell XD
Great video! Is there a specific microscope you would recommend for a beginner for close inspections?
I did but my microscope footage wasn’t the greatest so left it out, and you are not wrong about the diafix settings, those are definitely a pain! JSG
Hi JSG another enjoyable video, I got a seiko 7009a and used your video to guide me and fixed it, so Thanks. Can you share the link for the Chinese jewel tool?
Hi Miguel, I’ll add it to the description later today, keep your eyes peeled. JSG
I have this watche but the condition is pretty beat so what would you suggest I do?
Excellent! Like the organisation of the screws.
Is the main spring winder set Chinese? If so is it any good?
Yep, this is a Chinese main spring winder set, cost me around £50, but I’m yet to be wowed by it. Out of the 10 watches I’ve worked on, I’ve only been able to use it on 3 of them! The other y watches had odd spring sizes that didn’t have a winder or combination that would fit to catch it and wind it. JSG
@@jsgwatches thank you, I know how expensive the pukka set is, was hoping this would do.
a refurbished Seiko Citizen Ricoh in the Indian market today costs less than $ 10 on eBay. just last week I bought myself a collection of 2 Seiko 5 and 2 Ricoh all together not in the region of $ 30. so look at developing countries while they can help
Hi! How can I get in touch with the person selling the plastic part you mentioned in the video :D
What size of screw drivers do you advise on this movement? 1,2mm and 1mm ?
Is that a new set of mainspring winders? Would be great to make a video review about it, just a suggestion
I may plan to do another series reviewing the tools that I’ve bought so far 👍🏻 (the list is getting long!) JSG
What sort of crystal is used on the Seiko Lord Matic?
Fantastic! Is it possible to post links to the star gear for quickest and the Chinese tool you used?
I got the replacement star from VTA australia, a search on ebay should show a few items. JSG
My Seiko 5 probably has a broken plastic star wheel, too. Who is the supplier on that metal part?
For a seiko 5, I think you could find a donor movement online for the replacement, should work out cheaper and will give you spares for any other future needs 👌🏻 JSG
Hello! I own the same Chinese set and the smallest point didn’t serve. Which size number did you use?
Thanks for the video!! Greetings from Rio- Brazil!
I'm just now beginning my journey into the horological arts of watch repair/watch making, and your videos make this a bit less daunting.
Enjoy the journey boss! I feel the art of watchmaking is slowly making a comeback 💪🏻 JSG
Spending a lot of money on a project is how things goes sometimes, is the price the hobby
can i put this caliber in a seiko 5 case ?
lIGHTER FLUID IS JUST NAPTHA. It should be commonly available. Good Luck!
At 17.32 .the yoke spring should be at the other side of yoke.
I have two different brands of screw drivers, both junk, where can I buy decent brands? What are good brands?
There is an other online watch maker channel on UA-cam, also bases in Asia, he does have all the oils etc... maybe you should ask him about where he gets his stuff.. I'll try find the name.. it is:
"Watch Repair Channel". I heard him complain about the moist east Asian climate even. And ordering watch parts from Manilla etc..
.
Most challenging part is filming in a humid climate, I have to turn the aircon off so it doesn’t affect the audio, and the room gets very warm/humid very fast! I’ll have a look into sourcing parts from Philippines, this could be a good Avenue to explore 🙏 JSG
did you forget the cap jewel lube?
Cap jewels oiled but my microscope footage wasn’t the best so I left it out, I may put it on my Instagram page. This movement has a mixture of diashock and diafix cap jewels, the diafix shock settings were a challenge!
I’d be curious to know where the watch owner lives. Guessing it isn’t near a coast.
How much would this cost?
Can you share the supplier of the new part’s contact info?
It was from Vintage Time Australia (or VTA) JSG
IS Seiko Worth serviceing , not Seiko 5?
TOP
I had a 70's seiko cleaned and it cost about $100,, I then found a crystal in the philippines on ebay that was another $25. If I had to put any parts into it, it wouldn't have been worth fixing.
Exactly my issue with this watch, crazy to think that a complete watch is mostly cheaper than some of the parts alone! JSG
Watching 4 watch repair channels, most of them use less oil than you do...just wondering...
Oiling is definitely something I need more practice with, it’s a fine art to get right! JSG
I can't get a crystal anywhere now, polywatch it is then
this is precisely the main problem that today almost any watch cannot be repaired.
I do not think that it’s a good idea to change the date between the 21:00 and 01:00 hour
A watch weighs more after you wind it.
Help me! whit the pins of bracelet. please.
Prodak jam tangan Seiko terbaik yang di buat kelemahan nya di gigi tgl pake gigi plastik makanya sering gompal keren keren
Very very easy to fix, Ihave two complete movements for spares…😊😊
Great job, but too much whining about costs. You have ended up with a watch that is worth more than $500 on the market. A generic crystal from Cousins would have cost you very little.
Crystal r cheaper than that
Until you start ordering tools, it is called horology, once you start ordering, it is called horrorlogy. Damn everything expensive about watches. Spare parts, consumables, cleaners, tools every fricking tiny thing is expensive.
100% agree, I feel like I’ve opened Pandora’s box 😅 JSG
@@jsgwatches it’s an endless pit, a blackhole and will suck your wallet until it’s bone dry 😅. “Dear Hobbyists, welcome to the club, enjoy your time us.”
I wonder that there is no case polish...!!!
