Interesting to hear the heel strap makes a difference. I've had Keen Newports before and enjoyed them, but found my heel has a tendency to slide back. This makes me feel tempted to switch to Targhees.

Just got a pair of this.. Was considering the Newport prior to this. For some reason the outsole and footed feel softer and I really like it over the Newport one. I have difficulty putting on the Newport heel strap over the heel. Question on the leather.. Can you get this wet like walking in the rain? Not planning to wear it to hike or anything.. Can I use mink oil to condition the leather?
I'm sure you can get the leather wet with our without mink oil. you can treat it as well I'm sure if you so desire to

Whats up with them if you were to use them for consistent water contact ie walking in water consistently? You think the material holds up well for that kind of purpose?

Yes I use my normal size. these sandals are kind of light weight and flexible

I think they will.
You may want to find something designed for water to better suit you since these keen's are not 100% water Sandals
