I recently started a list on my notes app called "Clothing not to buy" where I write down things I know I should avoid purchasing and won't wear enough, such as:
- Fabrics: anything itchy, shiny satins, very rigid denim
- Fits: shirts tight on the armpits, anything I'd need special undergarments for, mega crop tops, cowl necklines, stretched necklines, snug waistbands
- Colors: neons, bright yellow/orange/red, mauve
- Items: high heels, skirts/dresses (soft guideline, can break sometimes), pants with no zipper/button fly
Before I buy anything I check over my list and see if I'm violating any of my guidelines. Also when I declutter something, I consider if I should add any new items to the list. It's helped me a lot!
Jordy, you look absolutely glowing in this video!! I pray that you & Jared & all of furry babies are all doing well today. I'm so grateful for this video bcuz I've got the same problem bcuz I don't go shopping a lot in person. But when I do I like to feel like it was worth it to go out. So I used to buy everything that I saw even if it didn't fit I'd tell myself that I could flip it & make it work. Duh why did I put myself thru that!! The whole reason I thrift is to save $$ not waste $$. So I'm going to implement these steps to my shopping life, and I'll let you know how it goes. I’m definitely guilty of trying to buy the sites max to not pay that shipping fee and myself only realized not too long ago that it’s just silly. Also another thing I e been doing is taking that maybe pile and wearing those and I’ve actually weeded out a lot of things also loving some of the things I’ve just been passing on in my own closet.
Great video! Although some might say these are “common sense” tips, I think that we as consumers don’t take the time to think about them.
I love fashion. I love having statement pieces that I wear on the daily, the problem is (for me) I find myself wearing the same things. My 9 yo was in my closet with me while I was trying to figure out what to wear to dinner that evening. She says to me: “mom, you have so many cool clothes to choose from, but you know you’re going to wear those jeans you always wear and that white button (up) shirt!” I laughed so hard and realized she’s right. I love my Gap super high waisted button fly wide leg jeans and a crisp oversized button up. The point: I know what I love and feel confident in and I should stick to those pieces. The problem: I live in Las Vegas (a suburb actually) and we’re often enjoying being out in the mix, so I do love my stand out pieces too!

I try to keep everything organized but my house is so small. I do have things put away in totes in my closet by category. One day, I will have more room and maybe then I will be even more organized (and be able to see what I have.) I think maybe I just need to be more of a minimalist...but that doesn't seem to be working out so far lol

My closet is full. Need to get rid of some of that old stuff. Meanwhile..I lie/pile my outfits over a box. I have to go through piece by piece when deciding what to wear. I got rid of camp shirt. Too boxy. Might get rid of the shorts next? Not right length for me? Each piece I pick up with both hands. I know what I have. If I get something new I like better. Dress a little too short? Donate.
