    Great points. Mine really seems to like her 'free roam' time to explore, but she's still pretty small so we keep a very close eye on her. We've got a heat emitter set up for her on the floor, but so far she seems a lot more interested in getting into my shoes than sitting still under the heat. After 30-60 minutes of exploring time she goes into her enclosure and she immediately has a nap. she's so great.

    what about if they had an enclosure that they slept in overnight where the humidity ranges are perfect but you open part of the viv for 8/9 hours a day? do you think this would be suitable? as im thinking of getting my first tegu around the 17th and am really fond of the idea of free roaming however i dont want to cause helth issues for the animal :) thanks in advance

    People are going to do what they want anyway because there is no real true certain way to keep a wild Lizard, i had a Argentine Tegu for 18 years and he was litterbox trained and slept in a dog bed in my bedroom bathroom and never needed anything special to live for 18 years he stayed outside allday in my screened in pool area and like i said slept in a dogbed. Dont know if he could have lived longer had i done things different but i highly doubt it. He was strong and healthy I miss him and just cant bring myself to buy another one.Thebest thing u can do in my time with a tegu was diet i kept him super happy eating right and that had to be why he was so strong for so long. Bert always told me let him be outside as much as i could but in a safe environment

    Good video John!
    I'll throw in point #6 that by having a free roaming tegu, their constant exposure to home temperatures greatly reduces their metabolic rate and thus they are more prone to obesity (even with a proper basking site. Ambient heat plays a huge role in allowing them to maintain their core body temperature post basking).
    You hit the nail on the head with this topic, and more people need stop "cutting corners" when it comes to maintaining these complex lizards in the captive environment.

      good #6! Obesity is to common in Tegus

    I let my tegu out... he's ughhh... kinda a little shit sometimes. First time he was out, he went behind my wardrobe. So I got him out behind it, put him back in his enclosure. (He wasn't too happy) I then jammed a peice of wood behind it so he wouldn't get back in. He just pressed his little face between the wood & wardrobe & pulled out the wood. So i had to move my wardrobe so it was flush up against my wall. Problem solved, after 10 mins of him trying to get into it he gave up. He then wondered around my room, then I went downstairs to get a drink, came back up he's no where to be found... I WONDER WHERE THIS sh** went now... I lift up my matress & he's in my bed compartment... i STILL have no idea how he got inside there.. but he did. Must of climbed up onto my bed then pushed my matterss up & slid under. Tegus always want dark places to be, don't think they can't go places.. they can! They can move quite heavy objects, my matress is prob around 5kg (picking it up from the corner) which is heavy concidering he's only 3ft. Overall, even with my room being some what baby proof he can still find a way to get to where he wants. Also, my room is carpet & he loves to just leave his POOP on it. I normally clean it right up afterwards, as i'm generally in the room when he's out. But if you're outside & your tegu is freeroaming that poop will prob stain your carpet / leave a smell as it sits there. Not very plesent.

      @ProfessorHerp  3 роки тому +1

      They're like children. Think you proofed the room? Nah they find something you missed.

    #4 my city is build on swamp, no one have wooden hause and 70% humidity is...normal, in summer up to 90%, buildings have plastic liner under foundation of the building, and nearly everything is made of concrete, only roof is from deep treated wood

    Basking and UVB will also be an issue unless you plan to set up several sites, in multiple rooms. Having a reptile out to roam and interact is awesome but it's not what they need on a continuous basis.

    • @tbonedude12
      @tbonedude12 3 роки тому

      So you think they don't know how to regulate their own sunlight? How are you this dumb? Do you think the wild has no shade and they get to be under a basking bulb all day? if they want uvb they will fucking bask and if they dont they wont. my lord these arguments are trash

    • @rickcroney1286
      @rickcroney1286 3 роки тому

      @@tbonedude12 I was referring to having sites within your house for the animal to be able to go over and bask. Depending on the house and layout this may not be easily accomplished. If you can set this up obviously it would work and allow for greater habitat. Also humidity could be an issue depending on your home and location. Not quite sure why you are so upset. I merely point out there are things to consider to ensure the tegu will thrive.

    I don’t let mine free roam because she’s a pure beast. She’s not friendly what so ever and will rip my arm off. She’s a golden tegu, long story short about her attitude lol. Getting her out to change her enclosure is a pain in the ass and sort of intimidating doing it on my own. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ Shes in a reptile room, so I mean she can wander around sometimes but she chases me if I’m in there with her. Savage. Goldens are known for jumping at you. She’s literally a gator.

    I don't free roam my tegu, obviously (except for the occasional exploration stint), but I do have a large water tub in her enclosure and a litter box for cats filled with sphagnum moss (aka a huge wet box) to help with the humidity and shedding. She loves both!

    What is the percentage of humidity of a tegu

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  3 роки тому

      depends! lower in the winter is fine. Summer a bit more. Some people will go less than me in general too without issues. 75-80%+ air humidity in summer, 70%+ in winter. Higher in the hide.
