"A plan with no drawbacks" has always been my favourite line.
For a callback (but wait until series 7) watch "Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg", which features Ainsley Harriot in his usual role as celebrity chef (instead of being a GELF chieftain), getting the Dwarfers to cook a curry. It's hilarious.
Kat mentioning in the intro that they didn't know what they got into when starting to watch Red Dwarf. I'd say they still don't know. This show just reinvented itself over and over and changing from season to season.
Hopefully they'll keep enjoying it as much as they have.
Fun fact: The GELF bride, in this, is actually the legendary TV chef, Ainsley Harriot, who back then was in a comedy duo. Most the extras were staffed from comedians. :)
Levi jeans as a currency, back then, was a reference to the jeans being items brought to East Germany, by western tourist as an item that could be easily passed through customs and sold for a lot of money. About $500 in today's money.
I love randomly shooting and yelling "It's the wall!" in the middle of a horror game or spoopy section in a shooter. It only sometimes gets me killed :D

Fans kept complaining that they wanted Dwayne and Ace to return... So the writers finally gave in and just wrote this episode to make them happy.
I never saw the appeal of Dwayne Dibley I always preferred Cat's what is it?
Red Dwarf: GELF (Genetically Engineered Life Form)
Doctor Who: Gelth.
It was a rule with Red Dwarf, no aliens. Everything is genetically engineered or created by humans...
The reason they are on the Starbug in this series, and the final episode of series 5, Back to Reality, is because the Red Dwarf model spaceship was destroyed during the filming of series 5's Angels and Demons. When you saw the ship blow up, you really saw it blow up.
“Well I’m pooped. Straight to bed for me.” A quote in my regular rotation.
If you were not aware, the plan was to have no aliens in the show. GELF -- genetically engineered life form -- and all the other things ( Camille - the despair squid are supposed to have originated from Earth.
And yet they planned to feature the Daleks. But couldn't secure the rights.
Kat Google'd the answer too quickly and robbed us of more fun Paula faces!
The reveal of Ace Rimmer had to be reshot because the ovation from the audience lasted a full ten minutes.
This episode is full of callbacks, Polymorph, "Duane Dibbley" and "Ace" and it's played very well! "I'm just gonna slip into something more comfortable... it's called Starbug"
The way the room is split by that blind made me think you were back to filming at your respective homes😅. "Snookered" comes from the game, snooker where you play the cue ball into a position to make it difficult for your opponent to play the shot they wanted.
I'm going to predict Paula will like Series 7, Kat will be more mixed on it.
Neither will like Series 8 or Back To Earth - for very different reasons.
So many callbacks!
The Emohawk was a callback to the episode Polymorph.
The GELFS were a callback to the episode Camelle (she was a GELF).
Dwaine was a callback to the episode Back to Reality.
Ace was a callback to the episode Dimension Jump.

I did that hand/leg shake stuff a few years back in Texas when I went there, I passed it off as as something that English people do, it was a lot of laughs.
People from Texas/New Orleans were real good sports, pissing about with this type of silliness.

I love that this episode cleverly managed to bring back two fan favourite alternate versions of two characters. Always love some Dwayne Dibbley, but who knew we’d see him paired up with Ace Rimmer!😎🤓
I dont think ive seen this episode since i was a teenager.
I'm kinda impressed by how they did Lister's wedding scene. Just seems a bit less 'haha man nearly got sa'd' and a bit more, 'hey fellow men, this is how this would feel'. Idk if i missed that before or if I'm reading into it now.
Also the gelf (genetically engineered life forms)! All gelf are descended from lifeforms originally designed and grown by humans. In the books they got tired of being treated like objects/slaves and left earth to develop their own societies.
I think they also put something in about them showing up more in later seasons because the dwarfers were actually getting closer to earth.
The Space Corps Directives are basically becoming this show's equivalent to "Are you pondering what I'm pondering, Pinky?" "I think so, Brain, but..."
I thought Cat smelling was a great callback all the way back to Series 1 (I believe that's right) when Lister is trying to learn to read the books of Cat's people. Referring to reading by smells instead of markings/lettering. That leading to Cat showing Lister the book about the feline religion.
ALSO in S2E6 where they enter the female parallel universe ship and he mentions something smells strange (ie the dog). it's a huge leap of logic, but the cat smelling stuff is there if you want it to be...
with the Gelfs they are like the Nox from Stargate, they live primitivly but have super advanced tech.
I can see some similarities but I think the main difference is that they lack the advanced morality of the Nox.
in the novelisation she does it while he's asleep, he wakes up with her on top of him "doing it" so that's r-word, the novels are good but way darker than the show
I’ve seen Red Dwarf so many times over the years but watching it again with you two feels like watching it all over again. Boys from the Dwarf!

This episode wasn't meant to be episode 4 I think (you'll see what I mean when you see how 5 follows on from 3). So maybe it should have been episode 3! The BBC VHS also got the title wrong as "Emohawk II: Polymorph". Originally it was meant to be "Polymorph II: Emohawk" and someone complained it sounded like a football score! Also, Robert Llewelyn had real trouble with the "At least Mr Lister's guitar survived intact" line, as seen on the Smeg Ups. A lot of great jokes in this one, and the GELFs (like the Simulants) became a useful source of antagonists when humans are supposed to be extinct and there are no aliens.
I'm going to skip into something more comfortable... It's called Starbug!

Apart from that, it did have some good callbacks to "Dimension Jump" and "Back to Reality".
"Moss Bros" (Moss Brothers) is a menswear retailer set up in 1851 that specializes in clothing for formal occasions.
"I am not the cross between the talking clock, Moss bros & Teasey Weasey!"
Who messed up one of my mates' order for his wedding a decade ago so we've now all sworn off them. Actually it's interesting to see foreign reactions to Red Dwarf because you notice which references are recognised abroad and which aren't.

For 2.5 mins I thought it was split screen, and you both were in different places. Just the placement of the folding wall behind Kat caused an illusion in my brain! silly brain :P
It’s funny that you think of Doctor Who when you see the GELF. For me, as I watched this back in the 90s, I thought of Red Dwarf when I saw that Doctor Who episode. I was half expecting the Doctor to suddenly go “Change of plan… LEG IT!” and make a dash for it.
Cat's obsession with clothes and being cool is apparently built on a deep-seated fear of being Duane Dibbley at his core. Duane's first appearance is totally imaginary -- a hallucination brought on by the despair squid. This is the first time Duane has been made flesh.
Small inconsistency: When the first polymorph was destroyed, everyone instantly went back to normal. This time no. Instead of Cat running off to change, he remains "as is" long enough to dibbley the ending. As far as Ace goes, _he_ admits he doesn't want to go back to being the pratt version of Rimmer. The others prefer Ace over Rimmer, too. And why not? He'd actually become an asset to the team instead of a constant liability. So what possible in-world excuse would any of them have to "fix" him? (I know the creators weren't prepared to mess with the _status quo,_ but that's not the question.)
Maybe remaining as Ace would affect his program
He's got Aces bravery but none of the Space Corps training ?
This version of Ace isn't Ace, as Kryten points out- both Rimmer and Cat are currently unbalanced. They aren't the full versions of Ace or Duane, the Polymorph has torn a thread in their pysches, and they would slowly unravel.
The Oxygen unit would have been taken from a derelict ship. The GELFs survive off stripping ships of whatever they can take.

In the Smeg ups, that Chicken was one hell of a diva... they needed one chicken, but they get the one chill chicken that wouldnt do what they wanted lol.
Bigfoot, Sasquatch are the same, its just regional names for the same thing (hell american bigfoots have a ton of names)... Yetis are the same, same as Woodwoes (Britain), Orang Pendak (Indonesia), Yowie (Australia), Maero (NZ), Yeren (China), Almas (Mongolia) etc etc.

Something I stumbled upon recently that you might be interested in taking a look at in your own leisure is some of the sketch comedy Robert Llewellyn was involved in prior to Red Dwarf as part of The Joeys. A stage act, pre cameras in everyone's pocket, so very little of it seems to be around, but it is fascinating. Self described as being comedy that explores "sexual politics between men" and... Yeah... I can't think of a better way of describing what I've seen of it. Basically sketch comedy talking about and depicting toxic masculinity and the negative impact it has on how men relate to other men.
I love series 6, so many good episodes and funny moments. "Its the wall" is one i still chuckle to

Americans call him Big Foot...Indigenous Americans call him Sasquatch....Aborigine of Australlia call him the Bunyip....Tabetians call him Yeti.....and he's called other things in other parts of the world....but seems to be the pretty much the same species

My first encounter with GELF (Genetically Engineered Life Form) will always be SeaQuest DSV, the scifi series set on a futuristic submarine. I think it was season 2 that introduced the gelf failed super soldiers & their rebellion against human control. One of these "Daggers," Dagwood, permanently joined the crew.
Great first 2 seasons, then new guy took over who hated the fantastic scifi elements, & had the sub mysteriously transplanted to a darker, dystopian future, essentially killing the show.
Gelf's are scavengers so they probable looted the O/G unit off a wreck. I love callbacks like this and this isn't the last one we'll see. Keep up the great content girls it's always fun to watch

You can tell the difference between the real Ace and Rimmer with his emotions removed here, because he mentions sacrificing the Cat and breaking his neck, which Ace definitely wouldn't do. He's selfless, but he wouldn't allow someone to go down with him. It also doesn't take away Rimmer's utter lack of strategic skill, Ace's plan wouldn't have been anywhere near this stupid.

@TroyConvers5000 not breaking, it's just energy draining. I used to be like you "um well ACSHUALLY you should've phrased it in this needlessly hyper specific way, so I'm gonna correct you on that". But I got over myself because that nitpicking, the way I was, the way you are, just sucks the joy out of things. Everyone would be there trying to have a discussion about what they enjoy and that kinda input stops it being fun. So I just don't have time for that negativity anymore.
Technically, with a polymorph, Ace Rimmer and Duane Dibbley, this episode has callbacks to Seasons three, four and five. The Gelf chief is played by Ainsley Harriot, who became a celebrity chef and hosted a show called Can't Cook, Won't Cook. For the tenth anniversary of Red Dwarf, the BBC had a night of programming featuring the Red Dwarf cast and Harriot hosted them on a show called Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg, where they cooked a meal while staying in character. The Cat, dressed as Duane Dibbley, pulls a brilliant on air prank on Harriot by switching the dish he was preparing for the one Harriot had made as a demonstration. It's a hoot and well worth checking out if you can find it on UA-cam.

A little trivia but gelf is an acronym for Genetically Engineered Life Form, as Grant Naylor didn't like the idea of aliens.

Chris thought his wig was a serious downgrade on 'Dimension Jump' and it looks it. I suppose the priority by this point is starting to be the effects more. Of course it was still going out on BBC2, as a cult show. But them's the ones that last.

In many cultures consummating a marriage on the night of the wedding is considered a part of the act of getting married. Its considered to make the marriage 'complete' following the Biblical tradition of man and woman becoming one in marriage through the act. When Lister agreed to the marriage and said "I do" he was also consenting to the consummation in the eyes of his new wife, so it's perfectly understandable on her part that is what she expected.
Of course, there's no actual confirmation Lister didn't consummate the marriage before he ran away....
Series 7 & 8 bring a lot of fresh and fun ideas. But it might a lil while to adjust to it.

An important lesson, "no" means "no". Including when Hollywood has a protagonist ask a girl out, get and "no" and still pester her. She said "no", dude, that cliché needs to end.
Except for in all the Hollywood romance films when "no" apparently actually means "i want you to fight for me/impress me" and if you do it enough for long enough, then it's a "yes".
BUT wouldn't the logic be "Series 3 Episode 3" SO "Series 6 Episode 6"?
Not the best season, but it's got its good bits.
The Gelfs are still not aliens. They're genetically engineered life forms. Every weird thing in the universe they discover is there because of humanity.

While S6 is still "the golden age" you've likely noticed the heavier reliance on the running gags: Rimmer misquoting a space corps directive, Cat's otherwise awesome plans having two drawbacks or declaring something deader than (insert outdated fashion staple here). And here, along those lines, we start to see recurring cameos: Duane Dibley, Ace Rimmer, and even The Polymorph. Rob Grant apparently saw this as the writing on the wall in the form of this repetition, while Doug Naylor disagreed.
(Me from last week) Well, I'm just not gonna wait a week. (Stares at clock, and concentrates really hard. The clock speeds up, the sun rises and falls in a blur) I did it!! It's next week!!! ..and now I have to cry blood and go into a coma. G'night everybody!

I don't think Rimmer literally became Ace, rather he became Rimmer's idea of what Ace is like. If that's true then it adds a layer to Rimmer's dislike of Ace, as if that really is what Rimmer thinks Ace is like then in Rimmer's eyes Ace is a reckless glory-hound who would not only casually throw his own life away to be a hero, he'd casually throw the lives of other people away too.
