Very nice George, my heart sunk when watching the last section of Marree, the yesteryear of all the battlers & Esmond Gerald (Tom) Kruse now all gone, nothing but the memories are left.
Yes if the conditions are dry. It would be advisable to fit off road tyres. Speed is the biggest problem - keep below 80 kph and you shouldn't have any problems. Let your tyres down a little this helps also. Allow 2 days for the trip. I drive all these outback roads in a 1993 Suzuki Vitara.
Yes it is sad to see Marree as it is today after the closure of the rail. I think as more people tour the outback it will again become an important tourist town.
The three iconic South Australian roads, the Birdsville, Strzelecki and the Oodnadatta can all be travelled in a 2wd vehicle. If it rains stay off the road until it's dry.
I live in Belgium ( 373 inhabitants per square km ) . I suffer from overpopulation. I have lives 7 Months in Australia. I miss so much the great outdoors.
I wanted to go from South Australia to Queensland and just followed the blue line on my gps, I didn't realise it was unsealed until I got there. Long story short I made it in a honda crv fully loaded with camping gear and a full tank of gas. Filedl up again at the motel half way. Took me two days to get to Birdsville. Couple of short vids on my channel
Not a problem in 2 wheel drive if you are prepared and as above take it easy. The Birdsville track is quite well maintained now despite its history. The Strezleki (Broken Hill to Birdsville via Inaminka) is tougher, but also possible by 2 wheel drive. Birdsville to William creek via Maree a big day out but not a tough drive. Definitely call ahead if there's been rain.
Thanks for sharing it warms my heart being a way for 20years but oz is still in my heart

Is the Birsdville Track suitable for a Toyota Rav 4 AWD?
Depends what time of year mate and if the Rav 4 has any mods.

Any idea what its like to live there?
Cold in winter and very hot in summer. Very low rainfall.
