The voices in the woods are dialogue that a couple said during a secret love affair while living in Annesburg. They went into the woods one night and the man got killed by ghosts from the revolutionary war (red coats) and the woman made it back alive but was accused of his murder and burned at the stake. There is a movie in game that you can watch at a theater about it, but I cant remember which theater. The dialogue as to what they said while watching said movie is the same as you can hear in the woods.
The theatre is the one just outside Valentine. Might be able to see it at other theatres but I havent tried

Honestly, Roanoke ridge is probably my favorite place in the game. It is great for hunting (despite the murfree broods), it has your heart pumping because you dont know when a murfree will see you, you don’t get bored because there is still some people to fight *cough cough* murfrees, and the place is creepy, yet beautiful.
I think my least favorite thing about Roanoke ridge is the fact that just completely out of nowhere a cougar can run out of the woods, spook you off your horse and eat you. It’s terrifying just seeing a red dot appear on your map and start running towards you not knowing what it is
That happened to me just recently. (Started playing properly) A valuable lesson was learned by that cougar and now everywhere i ride.....i keep either a shotgun or repeater out...especially in the wilds. Incredible game!

Who else here has gone to the Murfree brood gang hideout cave, and blasted them all (make sure to throw a few dynamite for extra fun ;-) ?
One of the first things I did the game when you get to move around freely.
I played some 'Westworld', which means just taking off in some direction and seeing what happens. Along the way I got some fire flasks, throwing knives and dynamite sticks. Gladly emptied out that cave.
I burned them😂
What I did was throw 50 fire bombs and aided the melee weapons it was the best time ever
me shit is fun
I did just that, I did it for revenge. First time I met them I was exploring, just walking around when they started appearing out of nowhere, killed me almost instantly. I went to their hideout but they ended up killing me there too. I understood I needed more and better guns to take them out so came back much later in the game. I killed every last one damn Murfree i could possibly found. Felt good.
I really expected the Murfrees to have a bigger part in the game than they did. My first encounter was when they show up during your first camping session up there and they seemed like a bigger threat than they ended up being.
I was in cinematic when the Murfree gang crashed a burning stagecoach in front of me and I had zero time to react before I was bucked by my horse and this crazy looking dude ran up and stabbed me.

I'm losing sleep because a guy came up to me in the glaciers which is very rare. I was fishing at one the lakes at night and it was all foggy. I look over and I see in the distance a man riding up the road. I quickly draw out my weap and when he got close I panicked and shot him. I'll never know if he was passing thru or was he gonna confront me from robbing his cabin.

I think the reason Roanoke Ridge is so weird, is because in the real world, an island by the name of Roanoke had over 100 people living there, but when the leader of the island made a round trip to England for supplies, he returned only to discover that the entire settlement vanished without a trace, and there are many theories that try to,explain the mystery, some even stating that some paranormal stuff happened. My guess is Rockstar made Roanoke Ridge as a reference to the real life Roanoke Island

Just a guess, but the region in question is based on the Ozark Forest and plateau and also shares a name with Roanoke Virginia. Roanoke is famous for being the site of the sudden and mysterious disappearance of an entire settlement in the 17th century. The Ozarks also have a reputation for being the location of numerous strange disappearances and paranormal occurrences.

That Haunted forest is referenced in one of the movies over in saint denis. From what I remember two lovers met up by the big rock ; where he pranked her and she had that whole you should be ashamed line lool. I've actually always loved Roanoke Bridge. It looks a lot like Norway, which is where i'm from. Whenever i'm there, I feel like i'm on a trail ride in a forest in Norway, I actually love it! Plus, if i get ambushed, i get to shoot some people without losing honor :)

I know what the voices are supposed to be, and it's far more dark and depressing than you may realize. (Sorry for the super long comment.....)
The settlers of the Roanoke Colony (given the nickname the Lost Colony) were some of the first few settlers in the new world when Britain first sent people over to America in the late 1500s. In fact, I think they were the absolute first attempt at Britain colonization in the new world. They had a camp on the real-life equivalent of Roanoke Ridge. (The game designers may have named it Roanoke Ridge specifically for this reason) The supplies they were originally sent to the new land with ran out about half-way through their first winter there. Cold, alone, afraid, and hungry, they began using whatever they could as food. Random animals near camp, their horses, their pets, even their recently deceased camp-mates. They were unable to send out a help letter to Great Britain, since they weren't expecting another ship to arrive until mid spring. Now, here's where it gets interesting. When the next ship did come in the spring, they went to the camp. No people were found there, no bones or other remains. The camp was there, all possessions were there, even the bones from the horses and other animals were there. Nothing was burnt down or torn apart, the people were just *gone*.
In fact, If I remember correctly, one of the first few to play a detective role and attempt to learn what happened to the Lost Colony was John Smith, the "dream boat" guy featured in the Pocahontas movie.
My guess is that the voices were supposed to be hinting at that Lost Colony, which was in fact near the top of what would be real-life's Roanoke Ridge. My reasoning to that is what I heard some of the voices saying.

I remember when i first started the game, i think i was in maybe chapter 2. I was just riding along, minding my business riding through the woods, and out of no where, down the hill came a wagon on fire, and i saw a bunch of incest, hillbilly looking people coming from each direction. One of them ran up from behind a bush, and stabbed me in the heart. From then on, every time i saw a Murphee Brood member, i make it my business to kill each, and everyone of them. Insta headshots earmed for them.

When I first went to Roanoke Ridge I heard someone or something whistling at me, it was right in front of the hanged man, that was just as creepy as the voices in my opinion.

I was riding though the saint denis swamp and there was a hanged man i shot it down and the was a note and it said something like they were going to kill me and i could not let that happend so then a hole bunch of wierd dudes come out of the swamp and tried to cut my throat

After all the attacks the Murfree brood made against me, it was nice to find their cave and wipe out a ton of them in a fell swoop.

Thought I’d mention it but for those listening to the background while he was talking to the gang heard a howling/whistling. That sound is unique and indicates there’s a dead body nearby to investigate. You can tell your going the right way cause the sound will happen if your going in the right direction and get louder til you reach it. Still I think it’s really creepy hearing that at night

i drove through the forest at rianoke ridge and stumbled on a dead man hanging on a tree. suddenly those creepy gang members accused me of killing the hanging man and started chasing me. killed ‘em all and started to get curious what would happen if i cut the hanging man loose so i went back to him. i didn’t see him anymore (i even cleared the whole path and the surrounding area out but there was no sign of him).
