There is no doubt about it: grit is fantastic. It's a clear, informative, and entertaining review of Angela's research over the last decade or so. The book also includes tips on how to cultivate grit and how we can support grit in others. There are few people who would not benefit from this book.
Grit is a good reminder in this standardized testing culture that an exclusive focus on ability and potential can distract us from the importance of other variables important for success.
It's troubling to me, however, how the media and the Grit publicity machine have framed Angela's research. Grit is frequently referred to as the "anti-IQ," as if there is some sort of competition or tension between grit and talent. For example, I've read a number of articles claiming that "grit is the true secret to success" and that "forget talent, success comes from grit."
Another criticism I have of the book's reception is that people are treating the concept of grit as if it were brand new. As if no one in the history of psychology has ever studied things like passion, perseverance, hope, and so on. This is a travesty, because there have been so many other researchers who have worked tirelessly to advance our scientific understanding of the many topics covered in Grit.

I remember Angela in her Ted Talk in which she shared the study that she also explained in this video. Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it's a marathon, not a sprint. This is the one charecteristic that emerged as a significant predictor of success. Grit is about commitment, there are many talented, smarter, and hard working individuals that do not follow through with their commitment, so how do we teach people to have grit? How can parents educate their children on having perseverance for their success? And the honest answer is we don't know, which Angela says in her TED Talk. The most likely thing that people can learn to have grit is the growth mindset, people must not be afraid to fail, they must know that the ability to learn is not fixed and that we should on our own effort be hungry for knowledge.

A person with true grit has passion and perseverance. Goals are set and followed through. A person who works really hard to follow through on commitments has true grit. Ms. Angel told on how she manage being a successful writer while being mother and raising her kids, that she can manage to do both. Ms. Angela's research over the last decade or more is very interesting, informative, uncomplicated or not difficult to understand and especially very entertaining. Ms. Angela reminds me to become hardworking, stay focus to achieve success.

Angela's insight into the power of passion and perseverance through Grit as Amazing!! I feel like growing up I used to be that guy with insecurities and low self esteem because I felt I couldn't measure up. But, now, through running marathons (4XBQr) and a 30 yr law enforcement career promoting to the rank of Lieutenant. I know that if a kid like me from the other side of the tracks can do it, anyone can. Thank you for posting this Amazing podcast with Angela Duckworth. I'm just finishing up her book today.

The talk taught us that having the power of passion and perseverance is having a growth mindset, which we should have. The goal of the talk is to teach the listener how to overcome things when they fall down, screwed up and the progress towards the goal is slow. We should strive no matter how hard we struggle. The goal is to have a passion for trying things out for us to learn. The power of passion and perseverance is having a growth mindset and the ability to learn is not fixed. We have a tendency to believe that failure is not permanent.
