They are almost always dark. The melody is darker in this one... A lot of people still think that "The Winner takes it all" is a happy song about winning. So it's good to hear that you listen to the text. The guy in the video is Jonas Bergström (born 11 May 1946) a Swedish actor. He has appeared in more than 30 films and television shows. Still alive today. This is when I realised how old this but still feels so NEW!
The embodiment of melancholy. This song really captures the bittersweet aspects of meeting someone / losing someone. Having your life changed by another person etc.
Frida is often overlooked, but I think she is one of the best vocalists who ever lived. She just happened to be in a group with Agnetha, who just has that magic about her that not many singers have. It's the ability to convey emotion through singing. Not many singers can do that effectively every time. Agnetha and Karen Carpenter are the only ones who were perfect at it.
ABBA sang about life, the good and the bad, how it is - and they've had the unbelievable talent to back it up and reach millions around the world and still do. They will never be forgotten. Movies are made of their music and a musical has been done. ABBA changed the world of music and left a lasting impression. I love them. True Legends.
I am glad that you are being asked to speak at schools. Sharing the music you have found with others who are younger than you is a wonderful thing. A gift that you can share that costs nothing, but you might inspire a young talent to blossom in ways they had never thought possible. All music is beautiful. Blessed are the peacemakers. It is very difficult to not fall under the charm of those two ladies. Which it is a nice bonus on top of the quality of the music and the angelic singing.
'The latest one by Marilyn French' at the time was a novel about two strangers who meet on a train, have an instant attraction to eachother, and embark on a passionate, but ultimately ill-fated relationship. Food for thought, eh? The song does NOT have a happy ending, as many people think. Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha have all admitted this, and that's what the haunting music is hinting at- now, the protagonist KNOWS that her life is meaningless and empty, whereas before she was oblivious to this. And, FYI, the haunting wails over the instrumental are actually Frida doing her operatic vocals. This was the last recording that ABBA ever made, and Agnetha recorded her vocals alone in the dark. When she had finished, she hung up her headphones and left the building. The sound engineer has remarked that he knew then that this was the end of ABBA.
Wow Im a huge ABBA fan and knew this was near the end of ABBA but didn't know it was the last I always knew this was sad and the music reads that way . I almost felt like it was a movie without seeing the video. How sad ,in a way, that she sang it alone in the dark. And that the haunting voice in the back is Frida (I didn't know that either)
it's their masterpiece - a love song, that sounds completely depressing, no chorus and a complete contradiction. Abba were experimenting with more theatrical styles at this end point. There are lots of theories what it's about. It's a women describing her monotonous life before she meets someone (if that's the case, why isn't she happy) Wikipedia also has theories that she's dead, that's why she sounds unhappy - the person she met is a murderer. It's a strange song open to interpretation. Apparently there were lots of problems and discussions about how it would be sung and approached vocally in the studio.
I just binged all your ABBA reaction vids and I love your genuine love for the band. You should react to their live at Wembley video or their movie. Both would be a little long but I think you would totally enjoy it.
So glad you finally got to this song, this is in my ABBA top 3. It's the last song they ever recorded (until recently), back in 1982. You can tell in the music video how separated they are. A shame, because it's so beautiful: the synth, the beat, the lyrics, Agnetha's vocals and Frida to top it off with her operetta voice. It makes you wonder what they could've done in the 80s. Also, Agnetha would've been a fine actress.
This song is my second fav, My fav ABBA song is "Lay all your love on me" .. the chorus is haunting like a hymn. At the time of release it was the highest selling 12 inch record, most records were a standard 7 inch.
From Wikipedia: "Apart from Fältskog's lead vocal and a vocal line of Lyngstad mixed with the instrumental, the only instruments featured on the song were Andersson's synthesizer and drum machine, Ulvaeus' acoustic guitar and a snare drum by Åke Sundqvist"
I love the melancholic ABBA songs the most. As you mentioned the beat: This beat foreshadows the beat to the song One night in Bangkok which the guys wrote for Murray Head in 1985....
My favourite all time recored.. A Hauntingly Beautiful Masterpiece!! This as to be one of the most beautiful pop videos ever made. Please go out nd buy the albums of all these great artist's, you won't regret it..
Probably she is the most beautiful looking female singer of all time, with a voice to match. In this video she is being very cheeky and i just wish i was the guy in the video!
To understand ABBA music you need to understand the musical tradition where they - and particularly Benny - come from. Find and listen to "Arrival" in the original version. Not many comments are necessary, just absorb the feeling. There are many covers, also by massed military bands. It says something about the width of their music, the appreciation they meet and have med from fellow musicians and from so many music loving people
Beside UNDER ATTACK one of the 2 last songs they recorded (until 2018). Still can make me cry after all those years. I´m so glad you reacted to this one. To me it´s one of the best popsongs of all time.
The last ever song recorded by abba in 1982, of course we now have 5 new songs recorded in the past few years that will hopefully be released in 2021 which I cant wait to hear. In the 70’s / 80’s it was not cool to like ABBA but I did regardless and so glad that now they are being recognised for the great talent they where. Not many artist have sold almost 400 million records worldwide. Please keep reacting to them, there are some hidden gems on the albums that where not singles As Good As New If it wasn’t for the nights On and on and on The visitors Slipping through my fingers Eagle Why did it have to me
Thanks for this reaction-video, well done as Always. This song and video always makes me teary eyed because of its haunting beauty. Interresting also to notice how sad all the band members look, almost like a sign that the band had reached the end of the line. This was in fact their second-to-last video before they broke up in 1982. The signs were there also in their last Music video "Under attack", wich you should check out as well.
You're fast becoming a spokesman for a generation: keep doing the great work fella. And you're not alone in your opinion of Agetha's vocal performance; Bjorn band mate and future [subsequently ex] husband tells how he fell in love with her the moment he heard her voice even above her obvious physical beauty.

Just found your channel and been watching several vids. I'm glad you've discovered ABBA, being Swedish they're a part of my soul and have been since I was seven in 1972. You've got a new subscriber. You have a beautiful soul!
Bjørn and Benny got Agnetha to act the part of the person in that song, as opposed to singing it objectively.A "downside" of this creative choice meant Agnetha sang like an "ordinary woman" rather than a lead vocalist. The three ABBA members involved in this decision have all retrospectively wondered if "the dramatic scope would have been far greater had Agnetha's natural instincts been allowed to take hold". This is often cited as the reason Agnetha's vocals reveal much more of her Swedish accent than usual, as she is essentially talk-singing the lyrics. (Ok, I found this on Wiki).
There is a lot of sadness with this song. The end of ABBA. Agnetha song Alone. Everbody look other side. listen "Wrap your arms around me" with Agnetha ;-)
Frida is doing some backing on this song. The only song with only one of the girld is "Lika en angel pasing through the room" And that's Frida singing. Last song on what became their last album as a group.
You should try 'That's Me' and 'When I Kissed the Teacher'. This song was from their last album 'The Visitors', a lot darker than their previous releases and the album as a whole more theatrical sounding. Love the synths
hahatoldyouso it isn’t from “The Visitors”. It was one of 6 completed songs for their tenth album that never happened. Instead, this and “Under Attack” were used as promo singles for a compilation called “The Singles: The First 10 Years” in late 1982. It was added to “The Visitors” as a bonus track on later CD releases, but it doesn’t actually belong on that album :)
This is the only time when Benny played all the instruments. They asked Agnetha to sing like an "ordinary woman", as if that could be possible with a voice like that.. Frida`s backing vocals are so haunting and beautiful. These are four members, who were already successful before Abba, each one in their own right. Adam Dodgshon this isn’t originally from “The Visitors”. It was released a year later along with “Under Attack” as promo for a compilation. It was recorded for their abandoned tenth album and was the last song they ever recorded

Thank you for this one JB. This song in particular I could play on a loop all day. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re born to do this. Regards from the UK 😀
Yeah! This one and 'The Visitors' are pointing the way to the album that never was, the 'Opus ten'. I often wonder what it would have been like, a whole album of that type of songs. Instead, they stopped recording.
This was Agnetha's last song with ABBA. The sound engineer said she sang it alone and in the dark. After she finished she removed the headphones and walked out. He said he knew then ABBA was over. If you like Agnetha you should check out her `My colouring book` CD. It's mostly her covers of songs she grew up with. It's great because it focuses on her vocals and not production tricks. If you want one to react to my pick would be `What now my love`. She turned 70 yesterday.
I've been an ABBA fan since the age of 12 (long ago.....haha). Thank you so much for re-introducing their music to a new generation. You've gained a new fan!
Such a beautifil song; music, lyrics and video (and of course Agnetha!). I think it was their last song before their reunion recently.. Your emotional reaction says it all! I wish you all luck, here from Abbas homeland Sweden!
Great writing! Had researched ABBA earlier today. Thanks you and hurray for speaking to a school class. Such is a fabulous idea. Was sad reading stores selling musical instruments are going out of business cause technology takes over. Hopefully learning music won't go into oblivion.
I think you'll enjoy their final hit (and music video)....."Under Attack". Especially the end sequence where they all walk away......It signified the end of the group.
You MUST listen and react to "Like an angel passing through my room" !!! Sung by Frida - the darkhaired - and only her. A stunning ballad with a minimalistic sound - and her voice at its best! She sounds almost like an operasinger - and actually she can sing opera! And another must Abba song is "The Visitors" also from their last album - a very different Abba song - ahead of its time and about the fear of the Cold War and SovjetUnion in the early 80`s! Also sung by Frida. (My favorite) By the way - did you know that the bass-riff form "The name of the game" was sampled by The Fugees in "Rumble in the jungle, after permission of Abba. And the only other artist to do a sample was Madonna - where she wrote a letter and send a tape to Benny and Björn og Abba and asked if she could use the synthesizer part og "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme - A man after midnight"! And they thougt it was so good and the rest is history. Hung Up was a HUGE hit for Madonna! The last thing I will tell you about, is that Abba was in the studio in 2018 and recorded 2 - maybe more - new songs, after a 36 years break! The 2 songs will be released this year, we hope - together with a video created by Simon Fuller, showing Abba as they were in 1979 as Avatars - socalled "ABBATARS" ;-) sining the new songs. Abba area all now in their 70´s - so they will not apear themselves. And maybe the Abbatars will do a concert tour after the release of the video of the songs, with a live band! But nothing is sure as of now! We hope for the best!
I remember this charting back in the day and seeing the video on tv ... I remember how amazing agnetha looked in this video and was shocked at how rough Frida looked. Even back in 1982 her style was not working for her and this red crop back cut was so not her !! But alas looking back “ so 1980s “ !
ABBA began recording sessions in 1982 for what was intended to be their 9th album they never finished the album and only 6 songs were completed 'You Owe Me One', 'Just Like That', 'I Am The City', 'Cassandra', 'Under Attack' and 'The Day Before You Came' the album was intended to be released in 1983 they decided to shelve the album and carry on recording it in 1983, ABBA then released a compilation album called 'The Singles: The First Ten Years' with 'Under Attack' and 'The Day Before You Came' as the lead singles and ABBA then took a break in 1983 which was only intended to be a short break but they went on hiatus until 2017 when they recorded two new songs 'I Still Have Faith In You' and 'Don't Shut Me Down' which will be released in 2020.
this was the last song they made. both couples had been divorced by that time, and both that and their huge success left them exhausted. Think about ending up making one of the best tracks. Fantastic.
People! We love us. Hope we understand that air and together with feelings who everever you are or what you got or not. Live and bee! In sorrow and happines
Until 2017, it was the last song that ABBA recorded. It’s said that Agnetha recorded her vocals with the lights in the studio off. A rare occasion of a song being written in the studio and uses synths and unusually for ABBA, a drum machine.
I love how you are really feeling the music! From REM to ABBA. Thanks for introducing this great music to a new generation. Could you please react to The Cure - Disintegration (you will love the entire album). I will promise you the music and lyrics are so intense they will blow you away...
I recommend Meryl Streep version of this song (for Mamma Mia 2, but didn't make it to the movie), she gave a beautiful rendition of it. Btw I love both versions and do not attempt to compare them.
What I really like in this song is that none of it's inherent sadness and longing can be found in the lyrics. She's describing a completely average day. The pain is all in the music.
One of their best and darkest Songs. One really has to listen to the lyrics

The lyrics are key, yes, but it's in conjunction with the music that the full impact is felt. The song basically raises the mundane to high drama.

Adam Dodgshon this isn’t originally from “The Visitors”. It was released a year later along with “Under Attack” as promo for a compilation. It was recorded for their abandoned tenth album and was the last song they ever recorded
The Day Before You Came was destined for an album called Opus 10 along with Under Attack, but ABBA never completed it.
I know a lot of ABBA, but this one is new to me. Thanks!
Very revealing lyrics...the end of a great era with this amazing group.
i grewup on the radio so most of my music is before I was born. one artist leads you to another. you read about them and find out about their influences. that is how you discover music
I like your ABBA reactions! ABBA are almost always dark.
Please react to "Soldiers" by ABBA. Another one of their most haunting tunes.
Yes "Soldiers" should have been released as a single, very atmospheric. Wonderful Song.
one of my favorites
love this song..haunting and mysterious..
The Day Before You Came...my favorite ABBA song!
I waited years and years
for a reaction of this song.
I thought it'll never be
without knowing I was wrong.
Clicking through the channels
hoping for the greatest show.
There was no hope left
the day before I saw your fabulous video!
Thank you for this one JB. This song in particular I could play on a loop all day. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re born to do this. Regards from the UK 😀
Someone below said listen to The Visitors from their last album. It’s one of their best songs. Would love to know what you think.
I would recommend The Visitors also. Sadly there's no video for the song or performance of it.
Yeah! This one and 'The Visitors' are pointing the way to the album that never was, the 'Opus ten'. I often wonder what it would have been like, a whole album of that type of songs. Instead, they stopped recording.
The background bass beats are magic
This was Agnetha's last song with ABBA. The sound engineer said she sang it alone and in the dark. After she finished she removed the headphones and walked out. He said he knew then ABBA was over. If you like Agnetha you should check out her `My colouring book` CD. It's mostly her covers of songs she grew up with. It's great because it focuses on her vocals and not production tricks. If you want one to react to my pick would be `What now my love`. She turned 70 yesterday.
I'd like to see a reaction for 'I Let The Music Speak.'
This is also a haunting piece from Abba's last album-- The Visitors.
Hey, man! You should try ABBA - Our Last Summer. It is something special.
I've been an ABBA fan since the age of 12 (long ago.....haha). Thank you so much for re-introducing their music to a new generation. You've gained a new fan!
The everyday details in this immerse me in this simple-yet-complex saying. You choose a really good one, brother.
Such a beautifil song; music, lyrics and video (and of course Agnetha!). I think it was their last song before their reunion recently.. Your emotional reaction says it all! I wish you all luck, here from Abbas homeland Sweden!
Hi, JB, your Grandma and your Auntie are so right, to bring you the Music of ABBA.
For me it is the best song ever
One of their best tunes.
It narrowly missed the top 30 here in the U.K
Wow, an instrumental version would also be cool. Such sad mood...Beautiful !
There are several instrumental versions. Benny has one himself.
Great writing! Had researched ABBA earlier today. Thanks you and hurray for speaking to a school class. Such is a fabulous idea. Was sad reading stores selling musical instruments are going out of business cause technology takes over. Hopefully learning music won't go into oblivion.
A masterpiece
(My favorite)
By the way - did you know that the bass-riff form "The name of the game" was sampled by The Fugees in "Rumble in the jungle, after permission of Abba.
Wow I grew up in the age of ABBA and don't remember this song at all, thanks for reacting to it.
Have you done ABBA's "Thank you for the Music" yet?
You are definitely doing a good job...
This song is the tune ABBA based one of their new song upon...
You had it 1 and a half years ago!
FINALLY! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
I remember this charting back in the day and seeing the video on tv ... I remember how amazing agnetha looked in this video and was shocked at how rough Frida looked. Even back in 1982 her style was not working for her and this red crop back cut was so not her !! But alas looking back “ so 1980s “ !
Agnetha still looks amazing in this video but so sad.
Hard to choose just one, but this is possibly my favourite Abba song.
this was the last song they made. both couples had been divorced by that time, and both that and their huge success left them exhausted.
Their finest work.
Please check out The Visitors!
There are instrumental versions of this song, Benny made one on the piano. Speaking of respect, pls listen to ABBA Intermezzo No 1!
I looooooove Frida’s opera vocals through the whole song.
As the last song the end sounds like a funeral of ABBA.
LOL :"Theres not a single episode of Dallas that I didnt see" Never caught that lol
