Every comic book I ever read had an ad for Charles Atlas...he's an original, and led the fitness movement.

I simply don't like him.
Jane Powell is simply lovely. She truly lights up the room.
But Jane lied about not knowing if she had a film in release at the movie theatres on Broadway. At the time of this WML show Jane had lost her MGM contract and had not had a film in release for over a year and there was no prospect of one going into release anytime soon. He movie career was in free fall and it would be another year and half before she had any film in the theatres... and it turned out to be a box office flop at that. No wonder she was cagey about answering the question about her film career.

Such a classy show.....I was 8 years old. when this aired. I enjoy watching one a night now... really takes me back. Thanks you for posting.
I like to see the way people used to dress in those days. They respected themselves and others. I am not saying that we should back to wear ties and heels all the time, but nowadays a lot of people dresses as if they were to wash the car.
When was the last time you saw man or boy in a simple tie and jacket while dining out?
Wearing a coat and tie was NOT considered getting dressed up but rather just good manners in some situations.
That time is gone and I don't think it shall return. for better or worse.
I disagree. This was a fancy show. Actually in those days it would have been considered square or excessive to wear a dress coat like these men. Business men often wore plain suits, but many Americans in the 1950's embraced casual-wear very much... Now jump to the 70s and you have something there.
@@MrJoeybabe25 What happened was a blend of classes. The upscale places where boys used to wear a jacket and tie to eat, now belong to a more narrow group of people, if you'll pardon the expression. Men and boys never dressed like that to have a casual meal. Only on a special occasion or if they were part of high-society.
@@MWood-ry8uu Casual wear was a big part of the 50's, but just my personal experience....men would typically wear jackets and ties (especially when dining) but not always, certainly some situations called for dressing down.
But it was not uncommon to to see me in ties and jackets and women in dresses and skirts as ordinary street wear in the 50's and 60's.
@@MrJoeybabe25 in Bennett Cerf's interview once, he said that in the early years on the show they wanted all of the guys to wear dress coats and fancier clothes, but later he and John were able to get away with a regular suit jacket. He liked that because after the show he could take off the jacket and go around without looking out of place.
It is amazing how witty and off the cuff those old Hollywood celebs were. Nothing like the self absorbed zombies we have today. Loved seeing an older and distinguished looking Charles Atlas. It was very apropos that Arlene Francis guessed him an outdoorsman.
I only put this on to watch Charles Atlas and I ended up watching the whole thing! It's a pity they ran out of time for the last one. Also, it's nice watching a panel show where nobody is getting criticized or bullied for the benefit of the audience and viewing figures. Ah, the old days...

I agree that it is amazing to see so many famous people that came on this show that so many of us grew up with if not directly in the films then on television and when I was a kid I actually love this show
This truly was the golden age. Every one of the panelists dressed elegantly and tastefully in appropriate evening wear. Everyone's manners were impeccable. They were urbane, sophisticated, convivial and utterly charming. How can anyone watch this and not lament it's loss? Certainly, evening wear is not appropriate for wearing day to day, but it's not that much trouble to put on a sports jacket and/or tie now and again.
It isn’t lost. Formal affairs, both real and on television (internet), still exist. But if it were lost I would not lament its demise. Society and technology has progressed; smart phone and watch clearly being more utilitarian than a bow tie and tux, and inclusion of people other than white, upper middle class or higher, middle aged persons
@@igkoigko9950 Good manners and behavior, and erudition, transcend race and always have. 'Ghetto' behavior, again regardless of race, while so much in vogue today, is less desirable.
I think they were more aware that they were coming into people's living rooms on a Sunday evening to be pleasant company.
Always remember, though, that broadcast radio, TV, and all social media was and remains an artifice to an extent. These are presentations for an audience's consumption. How these people handled their private lives, how they behaved to each other off camera, we'll never really know. They present as people you feel you know, and that you'd like to spend time with. That kept advertisers happy and funded the production.
26 years old at the time, Jane Powell gave birth to her second child on 2/1/1956, about 4½ months before this aired. Say what you want about Charles Atlas. The top professional dancers also knew how to stay in shape.
@Lois Simmons: The show aired on June 10, 1956 and you report that Ms. Powell gave birth to her second child in Feb. of 1956. Correct me if I'm wrong but did not Mr. Daly say at 21.09 she had three children? If memory serves me right Ms. Powell had two children in a previous marriage (1951 & 1952).
As someone commented, Charles Atlas looked small compared to today's bodybuilders, but his program is still sold and he was active until his death at 72. Maintaining for the most part his physique.
I believed he lived longer than 72.

I love how Dorothy always politely raises her had to ask questions of the guests, after their line has been established, instead of just blurting out the question when John or the guest is talking. When people just blurt out things, it makes it so we can't hear anything, and we probably miss some cool stuff. She raised her had at the very end of the show with the woman who dove into water with a horse, but there was so little time John didn't call on her.
Richard Wielgosz ~ She often goes unrecognized at the end. It’s typically Bennet Surf that’s blurting out questions. He might start with, may I ask a question but, he never waits for a reply. He simply, as you say, blurts out his question leaving leaving Dorothy with her hand raised. Also, Bennet, being the narcissist that he is, often talks over John as well...not allowing John to finish what he has to say about the special guest.
Jiminy Cricket, this is one heck of a terrific show!

Dorothy was uncharacteristically off during the Mystery Guest segment. It had already been established that the MG was blonde, and not a 20th Century Fox player, yet she guessed Debra Paget -- who was brunette and under contract to Fox.

I'm just noticing this comment about Groucho being annoying as a panelist. Really?!? I'm heavily biased, as a life long Marx Brothers fanatic, but I thought Groucho's first appearance on the panel was the funniest WML show I ever saw. Yes, he derails the program, but he's doing it on purpose, unlike panel members like Cox who killed the shows they were on simply because they were pure dead weight.

+What's My Line? After watching the Wally Cox panelist episode again. He was definitely slowing the show down on purpose. He was in his Mr. Peepers character that entire episode. Groucho just completely ruined the celebrity guest segment all together.

Mr. Atlas is 64 here and you can still tell he is pretty big because of how his suit fits him. Probably a solid size or 2 larger to accommodate his shoulders judging on the waist of his coat.
If you built your size naturally without injecting ten thousand miligrams of anabolics into your body, you will still be pretty big once you are older as long as you don't let yourself go. Most people let themselves go as they get older and become a weak mess. And if you built your body on steroids or trt, you better hope you would be able to afford those things for life because once you stop taking them your body will shrink.

Jane never looked more beautiful in her entire life. She was never noted for her beauty bu much more for her abundant TALENT. She was a TERRIFIC SINGER, could hold her own DANCNG with Fred Astaire, and a gifted comedienne.

Have adored Jane since seeing her in het 1st movie Song of the Open Road. Had honor.of meeting and talking with her back in the 60's when I organized Key to the city of Buffalo being presented to her. She was as warm and sweet as she always appears on stage and screen.

I've known George Axelrod as a playwright for decades but have never seen him before. I was expected some dumpy middle-aged chain smoker. Imagine my shock! I thought he was a great panelist and wish he did more.
He took the game seriously.

I understand times were different, and things vary based on local, but as someone who's been riding horses since I was quite young, it's so painful to watch/hear about people doing this -- the danger to the horse (even trained). They're not designed for this. It just breaks my heart to pieces. ----------- In other aspects, I absolutely loved this episode and I really am enjoying George Axelrod as a panelist. He's very entertaining.

I knew his son, Charles Atlas Jr (1918-2008). He was a wonderful man and told me some stories about his famous Dad.
@@NotHarpoGroucho Eugene Sandow worked his entire body and sculpted it into a master piece. Atlas is carrying water and over 20% bodyfat. Charles has no 6-pack abs what-so-ever. I don't share the dislike of Fat Jack. He did waste a bit of time when questioning Charles Atlas, but otherwise, he was quite well behaved - in particular, his final question for Jane Powell was actually quite charming.

I love it when someone comes onto panel as a guest -- They feel they have to talk only in high-brow language. I saw an episode with Johnny Carson on the panel and you could barely recognize him from the way he talked.
Charles Atlas’ grave is in Queens, NY near my grandparents graves.

the problem with Charles Atlas' participation is that they didn't decide what he does: trains himself for show, trains others, manages a gym. He can wear a suit when he manages. He can train a person outdoors. etc.
So that's Charles Atlas, now I have a face to go with the name.

Jane Powell was fun. I didn't recognize her name. She started her career at an early age:
"Through her adolescence on the MGM lot, Ms. Powell made friendships with young stars including Elizabeth Taylor. 'I was a bridesmaid at her first wedding, and she was one at mine. I'm glad we stopped it, or it would have become a full-time career,' Ms. Powell joked of her five marriages and Taylor's eight."
Jane is still with us. She was married to the child actor, Dicke Moore.
Sarah Detwiler married Eugene Charles "Gene" Hart (1931-1999) who was well known as "the voice of the Philadelphia Flyers".
We've come a long way. Back then IKE was in the White House and ELVIS was on the radio. Today, if you turn on a radio someone is swearing at you (rap "music") and we have a squatter in the White House.

An implement is a tool, something you use on something else, like, e.g., a writing implement is used on a piece of paper. Dumbbells aren't implements, they're just objects. All implements are objects; all objects are not implements. Are boxing gloves implements? :)

Hm! In the previous episode, John Daly announced that Margaret Truman (Mrs. Clifton Daniel!) would be taking Dorthy Kilgallen's place on the panel this week as Ms Kilgallen would be on vacation. Apparently that didn't happen; do we have any information about that?
