  • I recently got out to Marine Area 10 in Puget Sound on a windy day to try to find some of the tasty little resident coho that we've had an open season on this year since June 1st.
    I breakdown pretty much everything you need to do know to go out and repeat my exact program for success:
    Which locations I fished - including my exact troll tracks.
    What depths I fished, how much wire on the downrigger, what speed I trolled at.
    I also talk a bit about getting these coho to commit. Did you know that for every coho that bites another 7 were following your gear? It's important to not just troll in a straight line, hoping for a bite. I talk about how to do that.
    What I used:
    Flasher - amzn.to/3p08MU9
    Cookies n Cream 2.0 Spoon - track.flexlink...

    Hey, this is awesome! Am just beginning to go after these fish before the migratory ones flood in. Thanks for the tips, we'll take them all with us on our trips!

    Nice job knockin' 'em out! Hope to hit the area this weekend, see if we can hook into a few. Thanks for all your content, I really learn a lot. Looking forward to putting some of your lessons to work! Any recommendation on speed ranges for these early coho?

      Thanks! I was probably between 3 - 3.5 the whole time. If you’re not on the fish, speed up and cover water.

    Im getting a 21 foot north river seahawk. and want to do trips out of CQ and neah bay. how do you think a 21 foot will do in the bigger water?

    Thoughts on what sort of lighter gear to use for these guys? I loved fishing for them last year but the fight on my 12-25lb ocean salmon gear was underwhelming

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  Рік тому +2

      Agreed! The most important thing in my opinion though is using flasher releases. When you fight the fish, not the flasher you feel em if you use any moderately bendy rod

    Do you use scent on your spoons?

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  Рік тому

      I do, but not always. For coho I don’t usually, also for ocean chinook. It’s just unnecessary and if you don’t clean completely between trips it can add a bad scent

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  Рік тому +1

      There’s a dense and thick line of “stuff” that shows up on my fish finder at certain depth usually in water more than 300 ft deep and about 150-250 ft down

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  Рік тому +1

      I love the diver game, but not for chasing feeding chinook unless you go into shallow enough water. This is classic downrigger, mooching or jigging approach. Divers will work better on later fish

    Question, why do I continually keep hearing guys talking about speed over ground when trolling instead of talking about speed through water.
    SOG is basically moot when trolling, because we are either going with current or against it and sometimes perpendicular. It’s not constant.
    Fishing rig’s are designed to work at speeds based on being trolled through the water column, SOG is irrelevant.
    I typically use the angle of my gear as reference and track the bubbles in the water as I move through the water. If a guy really wants to get particular one could put a paddle wheel knot meter on board. But telling folks to use SOG isn’t a very accurate reference because there are to many variables. So why keep referring to SOG?

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  Рік тому +1

      It's an interesting topic, because there's no single method that captures everything one needs to know on this topic of "how fast should I troll?" I also think there are many areas where currents are relatively soft and folks get used to fishing those spots and talking about SOG as if it translates to what their gear is doing everywhere. The problem with the angle method, though I use it a bunch, is it's also impacted by size of ball, size of cable vs braid and how much feet of wire released. Someone who advocates only for the angle method is likely someone who mostly fishes for coho suspended. Go drop a 15 lb ball in 150 ft of water all the way to the bottom and it's a very different angle compared to that same ball at 45 ft even at the same speed. And because your line will actually be in the shape of a giant C, it's not that reflective of what your gear is doing.
      I like to know how fast the current is moving in the water I want to fish, and adjust my speed accordingly, but I also have most of the cable angle scenarios memorized in terms of the pattern of angle I want to see based on ball size, feet of wire, and speed. Very much a feel thing.
      Driving your boat the right way to troll up salmon is underrated in terms of skill / experience and is far more nuanced than I think we give it credit for. As proof, go have someone else drive your boat and watch how many instructions you will want to give them...
