I live in a 1950 era postwar GI troop house. I still felt super paranoid about falling through the attic so I just went and bought a lot of strips of flat wood thick enough to support my weight and screwed them into the rafters just with simple tacking screws to hold them still. The time and expense at prep work is worth it in the end because even though I was scared of being in a spooky gross attic, I at least didn't have to worry about slipping off a rafter and falling. I just made a little catwalk and landing zone at the entrance enough to crawl along to access where I needed to go.
lol this is me right now, idk why i didn't think about the possibility my attic has no planks until i heard the ceiling crack. surprised no one suggested taking up some spare wood to help navigate between studs if you need to navigate one with no planks.
been doing attic work for a year now, people complaining don't realize his words are enough, because when you are up there and they have blow in you just have to use your foot to feel for the studs. No amount of light will help you understand that. 1. Blow in = Easy just roll your foot on the stud to find them. 2. Normal sheet insolation = Normal because you can literally see the studs I mean, just walk on them. 3. Foam = absolute cake, you can see the drywall and the studs because the foam is on the attic ceiling. 4. Attic Foil = worst thing ever invented. The ONLY time I have ever almost fallen was on that stupid shit because you hardly even have an idea of where to roll your foot and because its foil you could have your foot on drywall and not even know by mistake. I dont know how efficient it is but if you have attic foil just know anyone working up there likely hates your attic with a passion.
Here in late 2021. As a homeowner who knows little about attic construction, It would be nice if there was house code where entire attic has to have a solid floor, but I guess it has something to do with expense. Or at least plywood walkways that should not be covered with insulation so you know where they are exactly, but I assume that has something to do with heat escape on the walkways.
One thing nice about a house is the trusses are fairly close together. When I used to climb around in the Attic I always crawled and felt for the trusses with my hands
@@davenport9807 ... I poked around with a broom handle, because the blown-in insulation covered everything. You can also put your foot where the trusses meet at the bottom of the "V" diagonal braces. But still, builders should put in walkway planks where necessary. Someone could still put their foot in the wrong place & break the ceiling drywall, or worse... fall through.
You are already up there. How do you get into a inaccessible attic...I have a storage space with a hole you can reach the top attic, but the hole has insulation under it. Should a lay some cardboard down and crawl up on it?

I live in Ohio and new construction and this is how they built the home. I can access the attic but it is not meant really for living or storage although it is a huge space. No flooring so I am also looking to possibly put a catwalk to access some cabling areas

Good content. It’s dark and I can’t see it as good. Lol, I am a woman with bad balance. I guess I need to bring plywood with me.😊
Is that grey stuff a kind of insulation? Or dust? What is it?

Too dark, can't see anything even with MY brightness turned up.
Cannot see; too dark
That powdered insulation looks like the old style that contained asbestos... Good job disturbing it.
Terrible lighting!
you do realize this is an attic correct?
Dreamedia Home Theater you could use better lighting, LED perhaps?

No ppe and the words are covering most of what you are showing.
Just pay an electrician. Not worth the risks.
