    Be sure to pay attention that the first woman that walked wasn’t a geiko she was a oiran!! Oiran wear the obi in front and they have a more intense hairstyle

      Not an oiran! ^^ this is during setsubun and she’s a geiko dressed as an oiran. During setsubun, geiko dress up in different costumes and perform skits during obake ^^ oiran no longer exist^^

    The Bunsui Sakura Matsuri Oiran Dōchū is an annual event held every April in Bunsui, Niigata Prefecture (now part of the city of Tsubame). The parade, which takes place in spring, historically re-enacts the walk made by top courtesans around their district in honour of their guests. I think you should cover this event the coolest parade ive ever seen in Japan so far - showcasing the oldest profession in human history.

    Can I give you a tip? Pay more attention on the women in kimono with a round hairstyle, they are much likely senior geiko or okaasan. Nice to see former geiko Koaki is still enjoying Gion. She appears at 8:41 in kimono.
    Thanks for sharing this marvelous video as always. It reminds me my afternoons enjoying Gion doing the same as you. Please, visit Miyagawacho, the atmosphere there is much more relaxed and geiko and maiko are more friendly.

    Hi Dave - love your channel. Although I’ve been to Kyoto many times, I decided to check-out the Gion Matsuri this coming July for the first time. Will there be a lot of Geiko/Maiko as usual or is it just too crazy to see them at that time?

    • @DaveinOsaka
      @DaveinOsaka  5 років тому +1

      bryan cole Yes, there will be a lot of them and there will be a lot of tourists also. That will be your biggest obstacle but sometimes it makes for a great photo if you include the crowds surrounding them. There’s also a special event going on during the festival that I can tell you about. If you can send me private message at that time, I’ll let you know about it.

    Lol, at 9:38 a geisha passed you and you didn't even notice. :P The old geiko never get much attention. ^^; Anyway, the maiko at 11:56 is named Tatsuha, but I'm feeling sorry for her as it clearly shows she is uncomfortable with all those people around her. At 13:15 there's maiko Mameju and maiko Nanoha. At 15:26 (and 31:50) it is the Tama okaasan, and with her is actually a customer who is dressed up as a maiko! At 17:34 it's maiko Tomoko and Miwako. At 21:54, those are probably both geiko (the one with the long hair might be geiko Mao), who are dressed up for Obake (which is not Halloween). Obake is part of Setsubun, where people dress up in costumes. Geiko use this opportunity to dress up too, and perform short sketches at ozashiki banquets. The sketches often feature kabuki or folkloric stories, but with a funny twist. Geiko Mao actually seemed to be dressed as a high ranking samurai lady.
    As for the costs of a kimono or obi, you say they cost a minimum of 1000 dollars... make that at least five to ten times more than that! As you did say, formal ones can cost even double that amount. Not only are a maiko's hikizuri (trailing) kimono and darari obi handmade and of the best quality, but they are also much longer than a regular kimono or obi.
    However, you also state that kimono are fitted for the maiko and geiko, and thus the maiko are indebted from day one. This is incorrect. An okiya does not purchase a kimono or obi or any part of their clothing for just one maiko to wear it. These kimono are one-size-fits-all, treasured, and sometimes worn for decades by different generations of maiko, becoming icons themselves. A maiko's kimono reflects not only the season, but her rank too, and some can only be worn by a maiko for just a few weeks during her whole apprenticeship. It would be bad for business to purchase a kimono that can be worn for such a little time.
    Also, please don't say maiko are indebted to their okiya. Sure, the okaasan do invest a lot of money in them. Indeed, part of what the maiko earn goes back to the okiya to pay for that, but the rest goes into a trust account for the maiko. The maiko are definitely not indebted! They can quit whenever they want, without any financial repercussions. It is a great risk that the okaasan take, which is why they must be picky when accepting a new girl into the okiya.
    It is also not a sign that a geiko has paid off her debts, for her to become independent. If that were true, it would mean that there are geiko who are not that succesful, who can thus never pay off their debts and must remain living in the okiya forever. That's ridiculous: slavery has been banned in Japan since quite some time. A geiko must own a certain amount of kimono and accessories, in order to practice her profession. That, in addition to the many other costs that come with finding your own place to live, means a geiko must save a lot money before she moves out of the okiya. As maiko earn the same per hour as geiko, this would not be possibly if the geiko was indeed heavily indebted for several years.
    On another topic: geiko can have a relationship. Of course they can: they are just as human as you and I. Many young geiko quit the profession to get married, actually. Geiko often don't have time for a relationship though, as their daily lives are very busy with classes, work, and obligations. Maiko are probably also free to get a relationship, but I doubt their okaasan would approve, as it could very well distract them from their studies. The owners of the okiya will act just like the maiko's mothers, in that way.
    I'm sorry for the long-winded explanation, and thank you for uploading this video.
